I need a bit of help.

Hello people of Quetzalcoatl, I just need to ask a small favor of you. In my technical writing class, I need to write a research paper, and it needs a primary research component, so our group is performing a survey.

The paper is about the effects of drinking on academic performance, and I would like to ask that you please take a bit of time to answer a few short questions. All I ask is that you be honest, and please only current college students take the survey.

I will write the questions below, so just copy them into a PM and send it to me with your responces included so no one else sees your answers.

Male, Frosh, No, Id say I drink on average 10 times a month ending in drunkeness, on average about an equivalence of 2 shots of Vodka and a 40oz of malt liquor, its hard to say since ive been drinking most of college but yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, rarely and only on small assignments, i dont know what those are you drink not because you wish you were out playing a sport its because you want to go out and party, but possibly, conjegal visits or however its spelled.

undercoverage, voluntary response, possible bias - yes - it is a small report though, not a thesis for med school o.0/

He did an ok job wording the questions. Just a couple points to expand on.

6 Do you think drinking affects performance in school?

You might consider breaking this into two questions such as:
6a Do you think drinking affects others performance in school?
6b Do you think drinking affects your performance in school?

Or only ask half one question and half the other question. It is very interesting the results you get when you word questions like that as the numbers rarely match. Such as, asking people how many others do drugs vs do they personally do drugs. People are bad at estimating the behavior of others. :wink:

Questions 7 and 8 seem identical.

9 Have you ever regretted the effects that drinking has had upon your performance?

Becareful of using the word 'regret' as that impants a tone and view to the reader. Better wording might be "What kind of effect, if any, do you feel drinking has had on your performance?" You have to be cautious of using leading questions as is present in a couple of your questions (assuming you want to minimize personal bias).

Yeah, I realize that the questions aren't worded perfectly, but to be honest, I wasn't present for the actual writing of the questions, just when we thought up the questions. But this is just an informal survey, so I'm not looking for strick scientific scrutiny, just need to hear the thoughts of people on the matter.

Oh, about underage drinking, we thought that asking about underage drinking would possible put people on guard if they had drank underage to try to keep the answers more honest. But thank you for the comments on the questions.

And thanks for the reply Matt, but you could have PM'd me your reply. I'd like to maintain some anonymity and keep others replies from affecting others.

til i pass out, ~10+ drinks depending on what 20+ if its beer

no cause i normally pass out and wake up well before class the next day. in the last 3 years ive only missed 1 class due to drinking

7 Has your academic performance changed due to alcohol since you began drinking?
well my gpa has fallen slightly but i feel that is more due to FFXI than the drinking. From 3.9-3.75.

not really

no

... I dont study. I do hw and go to class that is it.

Yea ive written quite a few papers while buzzed... never really drunk tho

FFXI is what i do when i dont feel like drinking. My freshman year it was drink 30 days a month.

FFXI lol

Only thing i ever regret doing while drinking is uriniating on my own car... Not quite sure how it happened or do i remember doing it but my friends had pictures.
