ok what kind of gear should RDM use i hear MND is for spells like paralyze and INT is for spells like blind is that true? does that mean i need a balance of MND and INT some people say yes others say no ;_; im confused!
and is that a reason to be subbing BLM? for more INT gives a bit of a MP boost more then WHM and ya have warp, sleepieness spells, etc...
i also had a bit of a fight cuz someone kept telling me to sub BRD but i refused to because i really didnt see a point i mean sure ya have another way of refreshing but then ya lack some spells and some mp and stats and ya might get resisted a tons but i dont think anyone rly cares as long as there refreshed but i wouldnt wanna look a bit n00bish...
do u think subbing /brd is a bit of a bad thing?
if so why?
i dont think a rdm/brd could beat a rdm/blm or rdm/whm
maybe im wrong? I dont know ;_; im confused my job has to many options to it -cries-
oh and let me say this up ahead >.> no need to be rude and mean say ya opinions nicely XD

That wasn't the easiest read at 6:30am but!
You need it all.
You need a set of gear with +mnd
You need a set of gear with +int
You need a set of gear with +mp for 40+

Mnd = slow, para
Int = blind, gravity
You should ALWAYS land -all- 4. MP is for Convert (put on all mp gear, convert)

Blm is the best Rdm sub available period. Conserve MP, Warp, Elemental Seal, Drain, Aspir, Elem Debuffs, and more Int.
Whm offers Divine Seal, -na spells, Erase, and eventually Tele's.
Brd is...... okay but nothing worth subbing.

Sub Whm if you are main heal, if you are not sub Blm. Simple. ^^

as far as subs go it's rather situational...some people say blm is the best some say whm...i personally prefere whm sub but it really just depends on your play style. if you like to nuke inbetween your normal rdm bit sub blm...if you prefere having -na's and curaga's for when they're required sub whm (and divine seal will save you a little bit of MP after you convert). whm will also give you higher mind which will make your stats a little more even because rdm naturally has high int. both are equally useful, as i said it just depends on your play style.
the reason for brd sub is being able to cast ballad, which is helpful in mage heavy parties

as far as the gear thing is...you need both mnd and int gear setups. equipment macros are your friend. it's basically what you would think, int for black magic enfeebling spells and mnd for white magic ones. also when you're post 51 equiping elemental staves that match the spells element will help alot too. ie earth staff when casting slow, dark staff with sleep, wind staff with gravity, etc etc.

ok so u say a rdm/brd is good if the pt was all mages or used mp but then again its better to get a brd/whm instead right? sorta like in a manaburn pt

2nd'd

There are more in depth things to be said, but for the most part that is all playstyle. What was listed above is all sound info. At 51 you'll be looking into elemental staves too, but just match those to the color of the spell and you're good.

I prefer /BLM, but I've seen plenty of good /WHM and both have their uses, so make sure you keep both subs leveled. Other than that, have fun and experiment alot. Usually the best time to experiment will be in your 50's since you can participate in your coffer key hunts and not affect people's XP. Best way to keep all your skills capped is to volunteer for lots of stuff. It'll give you a chance to test new gear/subs/strategies/spell orders, while helping your rep in the process.

If you aren't proficient with macros, now is a good time to learn. There have been alot of threads with RDM's detailing the macro pallets, and you should be able to find them easily using the search function at the top of the page.

in some manaburns parties, i've been requested to sub brd.
you can sub bard for mazurka while running around?
you can sub bard for mazurka to get hate very easily.

erm... everyone mostly covered the other questions...

ah peachy thank you thank you.. and mazurka huh?

Cornflakes, what level is your RDM right now? Subbing /BLM doesn't really do much until level 30, so /WHM is usually better simply for Poisona until then. At level 30, you can use /BLM for Elemental Seal + Sleep to stop links, but /WHM also gives you Divine Seal + Curaga, so you'll want to choose the subjob based on your party's needs. At level 40 is when /BLM really begins to shine with Conserve MP, and with all the Refreshing and Hasting you'll likely be doing, you'll really need it.

If you have any questions about using your Red Mage, you can also feel free to PM me or put a post on our shell's forum, and I'd be happy to answer as much as I can.

To be honest I feel it may be best if any questions (s)he has are asked here. Not only offering some of the best Rdm's on the server such as Uzor or any others a chance to give valuable advice(how I learned to play and have since received many compliments.. all thanks to vets), but also on the chance there is that shy rdm out there going "I wish I knew how to.." and is too afraid to ask.

Just my opinion though.^^

There's plenty of places to look up things on how to play RDM. Heck, even Allakazham has job boards for each job and people post up many things on rdm, blm, etc.

I've exp'd up my rdm to 75 using both /whm and /blm combos different times and never just one over the other. Although majority of the time I went /blm unless the pty asked me otherwise to go /whm to help heal or be main healer.

Both are fine, like many already stated. I never went RDM/BRD out of all the 75 lvls, heck, my brd is only lvl 5 or 10. /BRD is just useless since you can only stick on one song, and you can't even equip instruments or anything to help these songs.

If you're in a manaburn pty, just get a main brd to do all that. A RDM can pretty much do it all, but the most important role they should play is enfeebling since their skills are highest in that. Always make sure your enfeebling skill is capped before each lvl and you should be fine.

The INT and MND gear helps, but I never had a swap sets of those, normally I had gear balanaced for it, and at higher lvls I just got myself a lot of gear with int over mnd. My enfeebles were fine and I barely resisted much.

Heck, I didn't even really use elemental staves until lvl 65 or so and I was still doing well with my enfeebles. Once you hit 41, you'll basically become a refresh whore, then you can land your enfeebles between that and everything else that's needed, like healing and MBing.

RDM is a fun job though, and worth taking to 75, it's good for soloing purposes at 75 too for some tough mobs, even though it may take a while, but RDM/BLM, RDM/NIN are excellent solo combos.

She's welcome to do both. I just wanted to offer her someone to approach directly from her own linkshell for any questions she comes up with on the spot. ^^

all useful information thank you!
anyone know how to ballista with rdm?

Ballista with RDM can be very situational. I don't do ballista very much at all, but I used to be in a ls that did.

RDM/RNG for Bind>Sidewinder is an unusual favorite, and you'll need some interesting gear to do much with it, but it works.
RDM/NIN works, but like any /nin, you'll want poison pots to take care of sleepga.
Other than that... maybe /blu, but I haven't heard anything about it.
/BLM is okay for nuking out shadows, since it beats RDM's native Diaga (poisoning/dia'ing anyone in ballista is bad, since it removes the tactic of sleeping to set up a kill or to run away)

always wanted to ballista but i dont know it seems so hard

Good info everyone posted, but don't use guides to learn a job. Go out and play around with the different abilities/spellls. Join diff pt setups and adjust to whatever role you take. Try soloing nms, ep-vt mobs, etc. Ive been asked several times if someone taught me how to play rdm... nope. Have fun with whatever job you take up and just do a bit of trail n' error.

hmm i should...
hopefully i can be one of the best rdms here in this server

Probably the best advice I can offer is to get a couple friends to hunt Nunyenunc and get your Pilgrim's Wand if you haven't already. Until you get your Dark Staff at level 51, that will have the most profound effect on your MP, because it gives you an extra 2 MP for every tick while resting. Also get the Baron's Slops at level 20 if you can afford them, and eat Roast Mushrooms (which can be bought from an NPC in Kazham), and together you'll have an extra 5 MP per tick. This benefit is huge, since RDMs don't get the Clear Mind bonuses of other mages and we have to fight harder to keep up until we get Convert and Refresh.

I would usually make a few equipment macros, one for resting, and a +MND and +INT macro to reswap my items. Around level 20, they might look something like this:

Resting:
/equip Main "Pilgrim's Wand"
/equip Legs "Baron's Slops"
/equip Hands "Zealot's Mitts"
/heal

MND:
/equip Main "Yew Wand +1"
/equip Ring1 "Saintly Ring"
/equip Ring2 "Saintly Ring"
/equip Head "Traveler's Hat"
/equip Hands "Zealot's Mitts"

INT:
/equip Main "Yew Wand +1"
/equip Ring1 "Eremite's Ring"
/equip Ring2 "Eremite's Ring"
/equip Head "Erudite's Headband"
/equip Legs "Mage's Slacks"

Most good RDMs suffer from extreme over-exertion. Don't make being a good RDM take complete priority over your ability to have fun.

RDM can do many things. It doesn't mean a good RDM should do EVERYTHING, but aside from doing the main task at hand, they should be capable of doing many other things decently.

Of course, "Decent" isn't good enough for many things.
~A RDM tank will never out-do a PLD or NIN, but it can be done in a pinch.
~A RDM melee DD will never out-do most other DD jobs (PLD isn't a DD job, and PUP as far as I know is more of a toy job than anything else).
~A RDM nuker will almost never out-do a BLM, but it is a common tactic (especially if you're fighting say elementals or nuking down stones in dynamis)
~A RDM main healer will never out-do say a good WHM, except where Convert is concerned.

~A RDM is for the most part there to help other jobs do their job better. Dia helps every DD, Slow helps every tank, Sleep helps parties with links.
~A RDM is also there to help a party in its deficiencies. Need a MB? RDM can do that. Need some cures? RDM can do that. Need some buffs? RDM can do that.

If any RDM tried to do ALL of that, they'd get very exhausted from the constant hawking over the log/hp/mp bars. The constant adrenaline rush will only wear you out. YES, you can do it in a pinch, but an experienced RDM knows when too much is too much.

If you want to be a good RDM, be an experienced RDM. Not a RDM that only knows how to exp (often times doing only a few things), but who can do many things.
