I'm not a tech guy at all but I would appreciate some honest answers to those who are willing to give it to me.

Long story short...

I'm gay and I met a guy online and chatted with him. The chat went from the chat room to a yahoo messenger which I never used before, I created it just to talk to him. It turns out the guy is kind of creepy and I was a little disturbed and logged off after I heard some things that he had intentions of.

When I logged back on to close the account, I got an offline message that was very threatening saying he had time stamps, the date and my IP address from when we talked and not to piss him off and that he deserved more respect. At this point I was pissed with myself for what I got myself into. I talked him down for 45 minutes and left the conversation later after he calmed down.

I'm willing to share this because I know there is some tech-savvy people on this forum. He has my IP address apparently although all we did was chat on messenger, nothing more.

What harm can come to me? I have a firewall on my router and my passwords are all different. I use AVG everyday and I can't change my IP address I think because I'm with a ISP that keeps them static. I even did a ipconfig /release on cmd prompt last night and unplugged everything. This morning I did /renew and it was still the same address.

Any tips or reassurances would be appreciated. I'm scared he might out me somehow.

IP addresses aren't that hard to find. some sites and forums force post your info anyway, I don't see why he thinks that is such a ground breaking thing. He just sounds like an idiot. Block him and Ignore him. I'd only worry if you gave up really personal info like your home address, which, You shouldn't be doing that anyway. Though, first hint if anyone asked me to get on lolyahoo anything i'd walk away. But I also did away with instant messaging stuffs years ago. If your using stuff like that by means of dating someone or trying to, I think you should make completely unrelated email and instant messenger names so you don't cripple personal info if someone turns out to be a psycho.

I made a whole new email on yahoo (which I never use) and didn't share anything. Shortly after I was on the messenger I wanted off quick.

What Misi sais basically.

If all he has is your IP adress and a couple of time stamps you don't have much to worry about.

This is why I'm confused when men choose to be gay.

You know Cua i have to ask you if you know enough about computers to follow simple enough directions and then im going to ask if your internet connection is coming through a wireless router? and also take this to emails because no one else cares so please reply in a private message.
Confused

You have nothing to worry about, Cuacos. Your IP can only give a general geographical location, nothing too specific. In terms of him getting access to your computer, it depends on your firewall/antivirus shit I guess. Don't open any email from him, and you'll be fine.

If you want to be more reassured, although I'm probably repeating what the above are saying:

Google "what's my ip"
Get your IP
Go to an IP look up site
Whatever info you find there after you slapped your IP in it will probably be whatever that creepy fuck has access to.

Minor article: http://www.wikihow.com/Trace-an-IP-Address

Backfire it. Say you've got HIS IP address and that you can report it to his ISP for death threats and stuff =p

Do not show fear.

For latent effect, e-mail him this picture:

Thanks guys. This is one of the only places I can go to and say this shit, lol.

but tristam you can ping him to death

Your IP address is owned by the company. If you trace the IP, it will show you the relative location (which is frikkin' huge). If you want more exact info, such as who owns it, it will only show you the name of the company it belongs to - alternatively the guy at the company who leases them out. He can't get anything else without a court order, and in that case the police will get the information - not him. So he can't ask the police to give him your personal information to harm you.

What he can do is connect to your PC if you have that activated on your computer. But by default, it is deactivated. And unless the guy is an awesome hacker, he can't do much more if you have a half-decent firewall, virus protection etc.
