Ok this is my first time in here and first thread but i just wanted to say something...
Ever since i started playing this game, i noticed there was a um….how should i say without offending anybody...well, i noticed a rift between mostly NA and JP players. and i honestly dont know why some NA or JP players have such animosity towards each other.
Some NA players think and say that JP players are a$$es and vice-versa for the JP players as well. However at the same time, there are some NA players who say and recognize the JP players at how well they play and respect them for that. I’ve seen JP players give NA players props and respect, too.
I guess its just too easy to see the negative part of things rather than the good.
Sure, the game opened up there earlier than here in the U.S. of course they most likely would know how the game and the jobs go. But that doesnt make them any better as people. I know many NA players who are damn good at their jobs and many JP players like-wise as well. I’ve met a lot of nice people on both sides and at the same time, i've met alot of pricks on both sides. Just because someone is a high-level or does their job well doesn’t mean he/she is a nice person.
I’m Japanese and i must admit that some JP players can be a$$holes, but i also know that there are some NA players who are like that as well. I’m not saying who is right or who is wrong…I honestly don’t understand why there is such a need for animosity.

We are all human beings playing this game for whatever reasons we have.
Isn’t that enough?

That right there is the problem lol

Some members of both nations start feeling less... well.. special? when another comes along and is doing stuff similar to them and perhaps faster or better.. and so they lash out and do things that are rather wrong.

Some people are arrogant and selfish and wish for the things to be their's and their's alone.

Others could be programmed such by years of governmental things(don't want to say propaganda) or parents (most likely parents).

In general.. a lot of people are at fault for the break down.. and on both sides.. And I've witnessed that there are a lot more kind people in the JP and NA (and of coarse EU and such) ranks than there are bad in those same ranks. The problem is, of coarse, as you stated, that the negative is more noticable than the good. Usually because the negative brings out actions that shock and suprise people and things that shock and suprise people are generally remembered a lot better. However, for me, I remember good things. Such as my friend Sti or the JP players that were complimenting my RDM skills as I was the only mage other than the BLM in the party. They were pleased with how I kept all of them healed, buffed, hasted, dispelled mobs, enfeebled the mobs, and kept myself refreshed and the BLM (a north american player who speaks Japanese and was telling me what they were saying) and very pleased that as soon as a bad ailment was on them I got it off. And then of coarse with NA players things like.. well.. just my friends that will take time to go all the way across Vana'diel to raise my sorry butt or to help me camp a NM for my job(s). So many things..

Basically.. people need to stop looking at the negatives and focus on the positives (something like the news should do >.>). But meh.. whatever

Some JPs are asses, some NAs are asses, so some people are asses. Just like real life.

I think it all started going bad when more and more people started joining FFXI and asking for free crap and what not. When I joined the game, the day it was released here in NA, JP were easy to get along with and would help if you really needed it. There was no animosity whatsoever.

Actually, Elemmire, you don't really here a lot about EU players, which is extremely odd, I really thought there would be a MASSIVE influx of people at the EU release, but there weren't as many as I thought.

I'm Scottish but I ordered my FFXI, RoTZ and CoP from the U.S.A. and, when I joined I really didn't hear much about the animosity of the American players and the Japanese players, when I came to the boards I started hearing alot more of the stories though.

I digress, what I really meant to say was, you REALLY don't hear alot about EU players, they kind of just, meld in, like scenery.

I really don't know what caused the animosity between NA and JP, but it certainly did build up over time, competition brings out the worst in people so it could be that, who knows, if anyone really did know, the animosity would likely have vanished by now.

We need SA players!! (South American) :-D
Lets start a revolution mah latino brothas and latina sistahs!! lol ^_^

every individual is different.. i was in a good JP ls and they told me they dont like n00bs /shouting with pointless arguments or /tells asking for help when u have no gil to offer.. thats some stupid noob shit that they dont wanna deal with.. but then again, they complain too damn much when u /check them.. i know ive mentioned this before and ill say it again.. most JP dont like to play with NAs cuz NA always try to play hero and cause an entire PT to die.. ie: blm using too strong of a spell.. from what i experience, i never heard an NA player not liking JPs.. all i hear is, they are good ass players wit their uber gear.. but they have had the game way longer than us.. but this is how the world is when you are behind a TV or computer screen, you can do whatever the fuk you want and say whatever the fuk you want.. and play a stupid life consuming game the fuk you want.. lol

I think since there is a huge language barrier, and as helpful as the autotranslator is... if you are in a pinch in a party setting, there are somethings that you just can't say quickly... like... (look out for the link behind you!)

Forever I have set my "language" as JE because I do know a very little bit of Nihongo (I can make out some phrases if they are <abc>) and I could use the autotranslator pretty efficiently.
But just recently, I gave up. Not one time had I gotten a Jp invite, so I even stopped using the autotranslate in my seek comments.
So even though I had my language set as "E" I got a party invite the other morning.

"Experience party" "Do you need it?"

Ludy asked me to join his party, and I thought that was kind of odd. But meh, I figured what the hell, and went for it.
The party typed in Jp to each other and I couldn't read it. The whole way to Bibiki I was very suspicious, I felt that they could be making fun of me or something. I really don't have a clue what they were talking about though.
At any rate we got to our camp, and there were a ton of parties around. Our puller takes off, and we all buff up in the normal way. THF says "(Paladin) (Provoke) go first."
Np, and away we went.
We got about 3k XP in about 45mins, a bit slow, but nothing horrid. All the while, the party were talking to each other, and they even started to type in letters so I could catch wind of some stuff.
Mostly, it seemed, they were either cheering on the Galka Bard or making fun of him, I'm not sure. Sounds like something an NA party would do, really...

We ended up getting a link, ugh Dhalmels... :? We hold on, but near the end of the last fight another Dhalmel spawned behind us and I tried to pull the one we were fighting away from it, but it linked and we ended up wiping. :(

Now here is the funny part...

The Ranger refused to get a raise 1. We had no WHM, and even though there were parties all around us, no one else seemed to intent on helping us out. A passing Red Mage (NA I believe) raised us (thanks!!!!), but the RNG refused to take an R1. So, we waited, and waited... and finally the THF says "(I'm sorry) Excim. (Ranger) = (R.Ear)"
Everybody in the party "w" and I "lol", and they kicked him. Then we decided to disband.
Wow, does this sound familiar? Anyways, I was offered my chocobo fare, which I refused, and the BLM gave me a D2. It was a pretty pleasant affair, and really drove home the point that there are cool people, and asshats, playing on both sides of the world.

I also think I picked up on something said about Serise. I'm not totally sure what was said, I think it was somthing either about how old he was, or how many hours he was playing that day or something. :? [/b]

Lok, you dont hear much about us, because noone can tell us apart from NAs unless they notice some odd slang or phrases that arent very American. They just assume were American unless we inform them otherwise :)

that actually is pretty much it i would think. some americans are ass holes, some japanese are too. japanese people are short, americans are fat, japanese are elietests, but, so are americans. all depends on how you look at it, though i COULD be that asians are put into a slave-like area work place and farm for gold/gil/other currency so they're overlords... i mean, bosses, can sell it. but thats really more main-land asia, not japanese...

The EU players get lumped in with the NA players since it seems that to the Japanese, JP = Japanese langauge, and NA = english language.

That is why I never talk. :P

Japanese attack on America: Pearl Harbor
Number of Americans Killed: 2,390

American attack on Japan: Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Number of Japanese Killed: 120,000

I can see why Japan would be mad at us.

Most JP gamers of today would only have grandparents and great grandparents who were alive during WWII. So by your logic, African Americans should be mad at modern Caucasions for slavery still because it happened to their ancestors?

Anyway, they should be satisfied with the nuclear strikes ending the war. Casualities would have been higher on both sides had we not nuked and been forced to do a ground invasion. Less people died all around thanks to the big shock effect, but I guess they wouldn't look at it like that. If we didn't nuke those two cities, they would have been firebombed to nothing anyway. They were left mostly untouched just for this. One firebomb strike on Tokyo alone resulted in over 100,000 civilian deaths. We fly 1,600 sorties bombing Japan's 4 main cities into nothing and while not as instant, doing more damage than two nuclear strikes. From Wikipedia: "Monthly tonnage dropped on Japan had increased from 13,800 tons in March to 42,700 tons in July, and was planned to have continued to increase to around 115,000 tons per month." That's the way wars were fought then by both sides. Given the genocide the Japanese commited against the Chinese population at the same time, I feel little sympathy.

(And here comes the big, we should/shouldn't have dropped the bomb debate). 8)

that number doesn't even include the people that died from the illness they suffered after the incident.

Conclusion: Most JP are kind - but play with fears that many NA are noobs that have expounded the gil selling problem. Many NA are kind and fair players, but fear JP for racism and disrespect.

I suppose its basically fear on both sides...I don't know i just wish that at least in a game like this that people should get along.
Maybe I am a bit naive.
The language barrier is big, and that is a fact. There are just some things you can't say in Japanese which can be said in English and vice-versa.
I gotta agree to that.

And I'm gonna ask this even if it seems like a lost discussion....
Is there anything or any way that can help stop the situation?
