In my warcraft guild we had a great game.

We called it the Wowerball, everyone donated 1g (Prob. equiv to 1k gil) for a lotto ticket and chose a number (only allowed one ticket!) Once every week a random 1-1000 was held in a public place for everyone to watch and if someone guessed correctly, got the full pot. If no one won, the pot carried over, and you had to buy a new ticket.

Sometimes the pot got very large before a winner was found! I suppose it is technically gambling, (lottery) but I think it'd be fun.

We can call it the Q-ball or something. Now some people may have trust issues (who's holding the money!? etc) but you are only putting 1k on the line, and if I did volunteer it would be on my jeuno mule so that I never ever got to touch the money and wouldn't. (If someone else trustworthy wants to volunteer, I'd rather they did, but I wouldnt mind if no one wants to.)

I just think that 20 doller paypals are kinda silly for a FFXI board contest reward. It'd be more fun to get actual in game rewards.

Sounds like a pretty good idea Mistaya! I'd totally be interested in this especially since its only gonna be 1 gil for a ticket.

1k* per ticket ;)
I'm up for it.. if enough people sign up its a nice reward for next to nothing.

Oh, I didnt see that before, lol. Well yea...I guess 1k is reasonable also. ^^

yeah count me in, but didn't we try this like 3 other times, and it just blew over eventually?

I think this would work better in a LS than making it public. Also, there are assholes that would call a GM on you saying you are flooding the chat window. I distinctly remember someone in Jeuno getting a GM called on them because they started a "random" game with pubbies.

I remember someone tried this once in Lower Jeuno back when I played 2 years ago. It was a Mithran Red Mage, kinda high level. I just remembered nobody really liked him/her and she got flamed quite often for being gimp/not knowing how to play. I can't remember her name though.

In any event, it could be fun for some people. You would just have to get the word out.

When I was in BOL, certain members held events such as these lotteries.

Instead of using random, just pick a number between 0-999.

Then when the day comes, the person who held the lottery does ONE random and determines the winner.

Winnar \(¯—¯)/

Numero 420 yes please

Yeah. I was in the same guild as Mistaya in WoW at one point. That's how it was done, but in "guild-only". Not a bad idea, I just think doing the public one can be a massive headache. You'd have to bust out a spreadsheet or something if you get too many participants.

Sounds like a good idea, but I think if we're all getting involved with just this forum or whoever else we get in the game to join, for those who are participating should meet in a spot where there's hardly anyone else at to do the /random.

As for the trust issue for who carries the gil, whoever carries the gil for the contest, and doesn't give the gil away for the right number after telling someone else who isn't participating in it, maybe the admin of this site, then that person could be IP banned for stealing the gil for themselves, that way it guarantees they won't just take it away for themselves unless they don't care about going on this forum.

Ya, I think one of the admin on this board should be in charge of holding the gil.

QCDN lottery?

Yeah, I don't know who would be trustworthy and would be willing to do it and has the time to do it.
Sabia and Swishee come to mind as people I would trust with the pot, but I have no idea whether they have the time to do it and the desire to deal with all the associated stuff. In addition the pot holder would be excluded from the game, so they may not want to be the holder(s).

The whole thing worked well in the past, but that was a long long time ago.

Well it could never be spam there would be one /random per week (probably on saturday afternoon.)

If it did go through I'd ask sculli for a sticky, and people post their name and number. I confirm the gil sent, and list everyone's name and number in the sticky so its very public. We could do the random in front of Maat or something -out of the way- but public. Random is screenshotted, and I check the list to see if anyone won. If not, the pot carries over, the sticky is basically wiped, and we start again the next week.

Remember you need to purchase a ticket each week, and guess the number exactly to win. Its likely the first week or 3 the pot will be small and the likelyhood of a winner is also small. As more people play (and as the pot grows more will play) the odds of a winner go up. Of course you can only get one ticket a week so no one can just take all numbers from 400-1000 and nearly guarentee the pot.

Fal: GCR had probably 50-60 players per week, that was a very large guild. It's only a suggestion but i think it'd be fun =)

Normally with any lottery, you'd have to set up rules for it but most importantly, find a trustworthy person. But you know, it's not really that big of a deal. I could understand if it was a massive amount of money to sacrifice per week but it's 1000g. Getting 1000g takes like, no effort whatsoever. You could make that money back by selling 1 Sneak Oil on the AH (from your stack). It's not like you're losing tons of money.

Just imagine giving $1 to some random person on the street. Hell, I've given $1 in change to some homeless people before. It's not like that $1 will hurt me financially. The same with gil. It costs 500g to post a stack of crystals on the AH. If someone can't afford to lose 1000g in FFXI per week, you have some serious issues.

So that rules out the trust issue. You're sacrificing 1K gil and if that person decides to horde it for himself, the game is over and you're not out that much money. You would just never trust that person again and the person would be a nice addition to the flameboards.

Furthermore, in order for this to work you could make that person in charge of a stickied Quetzacoatl lottery thread. This would have to be someone who played quite frequently and has time to post the results on the board. You might even set up a linkshell for it so people can read the LSMes (in the event that the person isn't logged on at the time) to check the latest results/winning number and give a link to this website to check out. This would also benefit Sculli by providing him with more traffic to this website. I'm not sure if his ads give him revenue-per-view or revenue-per-click, but it's a lot more traffic for him to take advantage of.

I won't be playing since I don't play FFXI, but my suggestion would be to make it so that the pot is something to get excited about. As previously stated 1k isn't exactly getting much attention.

If I remember correctly, and it has been a while, the previous lottery runs we had were all in the 100k-250k ballpark, which was quite some cash back then. Not sure whether you'd have to make it 1M-2.5M to get people excited about it these days.

Even if its just a small pot....its all just for fun. I like small risk / small reward.

And like Mistaya said....sometimes the pot would roll-over to the next week and gain bulk.

This is a great idea (I love gambling!)-- it's just a matter of how to figure out how to do it in FFXI. One idea is that you could use PMs and delivery box. Say if I want to purchase a ticket and Sculli is leading the contest (Using his name as an example).. I would send 1k to his delivery box. I would then send him a PM on the boards with my number. At a designated time the person doing the contest would random and the person with the closest number wins. (Have someone deligated to be a witness-- and in an open area at say a Guild Stone or a Home Point Crystal.. or some easily accessable (populated area) where the person doing the random could shout that they are randoming for that week and those wishing to watch could.

There are a few reasons I say closest numbers-- 1-1000 odds is terrible. Any gambler could easily agree to this, lol. The acception being if you have 1000 players in the contest (and I don't know if we'd have that many.) You could go for weeks upon weeks before someone may win. Narrowing the odds is one possibility. And if delivery box is not a good idea-- then perhaps bazaaring a d.water or cheap arrow is another possibility. It would just be impossible for the person leading the contest to always be available to sell tickets on a personal one on one basis. Some players play at night, some in the morning, etc. Anyhoo.. I love gamblingr and would be willing to support this lottery when/if you put it all together. IN-game contests are so fun. Trust is very important-- and the best way to combat that is to eliminate as many ways that distrust could be established. ^^b

I think that's actually the point. The fact that it could go on for weeks and weeks could be viewed as a good thing. Why?

CARRY-OVER. The fact that it would take a while for an actual winner to be chosen means that the jackpot grows larger and larger every additional week, and has the potential to become truly mammoth. The larger the jackpot gets, the more people are encouraged to play, and once the prize money hits a truly sensational amount, people will be scrabbling for tickets...thus increasing the chances that a winner will finally be picked. It's a self-regulating system.

Real-life state lotteries follow the same philosophy. The odds of winning are astronomically low, even with millions of people playing each week. I mean, you have to hit on the exact right combination of five or six two-digit numbers. The carry-over, however, makes the jackpot grow, and when that pot gets to be something over a hundred million dollars, people drive hours and hours from other states just to have the privilege of playing.

In other words, carry-over and big-ass jackpots make for a much more interesting game. A guaranteed winner every week is fine, but it's a little more boring...like we were a bunch of grandmothers in a weekly raffle. -_-;
