I swear to fucking Christ I'm going to start scheduling things 90 minutes 'early' so the start time can be when I actually want it to. And just because you know things are going to start late doesn't mean you can BE late just b/c other people WILL be (as in, a WHM who was pting while we were running late that said they'd leave only when we were 3/4ths of the way there, so they could still XP until the 11th hour.)
Whether I'm organizing something or joining it, I can't remember anything in the last 6 months or so actually starting on time ('on time' meaning 15 minutes after posted start time.) This is especially important when people in that group have something to do later in the day. For example, Tyrath's last Optical Hat group run. We had 5 people who wanted hats, and had we started at his posted start time we would have had ~2 1/2, maybe 3 hours to get it done before people had to go.
Instead...
- I get my invite at the start time, ready to go. There are 3 people in the party, which soon becomes 5. We are now 10 minutes past start time.
- People continue to get organized. We are now 30 minutes past start time. Both BRDs that had offered to go have not logged on or are otherwise 'busy.' Noone seems to want to 'risk' their Cluster w/out a BRD.
- The group heads towards the Temple anyway. I find a BRD in my LS who is wrapping up a party and will come along. We are now 45 minutes past start time.
- At the same time, one of the hat-goers just now realizes they forgot their cluster. They are warped back. It is now 50 minutes past start time. One of the NINs (Vang) says he can only stay for three hats. This is fine. Tyrath says we will need to 'prioritize' hats.
- Bard finally arrives and we all enter Den of Rancor. It is now one hour past start time.
- We head towards Hakutaku. Someone gets aggro and promptly dies. Raises etc. Someone else gets aggro, dies. Raised. Right before Hakutaku camp, someone else gets aggro and multiple Fluid Spreads kill 6 or 7 people. Raises. It is now one hour and fifteen minutes past start time.
- We clear the area, and Tyrath says he's going first. It is now 90 minutes past start time, and it's looking like we will get 2 hats in, maximum, before people have to leave.
- The first fight begins. It is one of the DRK's first Hakutaku fights, and he Stuns things like IV's, Ancient Magic, and I believe Blaze Spikes once. We try to tell him to only Stun -ga's. I somehow pull hate with punching (No, I wasn't SATA'd onto, I checked the log) and decided I'm just gonna Chi Blast from now on. The fight takes over twenty minutes. Tyrath gets his hat. While waiting for the ??? to respawn, the 'priority' issue is neglected and we /random for next (and likely final) hat. I do not roll high. This irritates me. We have five minutes before two people need to leave.
- Those two people leave as the next ??? pops. Hakutaku is spawned and everyone eats an immediate -ga III. No Stuns. Chaos ensues.
- The situation is brought under control. Until more chaos. Both NINs die multiple times, as do many other people. Stun orders get confused as DRKs are dying left and right. Mages are grabbnig hate. I eat another -ga III. It's looking hopeless, I can do next to nothing to save the day, and I had other engagements in ~10 minutes, so I hit my Cudgel and get the hell out of Dodge. I stay in party to view the running commentary.
- Hilarity ensues. Everyone seems to be in full panic mode. My BRD is telling me how horrible this run has been compared to his LS runs and the like. He eats multiple R1s and an eventual HP. I feel bad for him. I feel less bad for the full wipe on Hakutaku and the lost cluster. Tyrath also leveled down to 69 in the chaos, thus losing the ability to wear his hat. I feels sad, but also an interesting undercurrent of karmic justice. I am glad that was not my cluster.
- I cannot help but think this could have been avoided if we had begun with all members ready and able to go at the start time.
The next night, my Windy Mission static was wrapping up. All in all they were a great group, but again, schedule conflicts.
- I arrive in Horutoto ready to go. The WHM and RDM are also ready for the 8-2 trigger-spawn fight, but the NIN is fighting Kirin (and a second Kirin I was unaware of,) the BLM is in Dynamis (won, and grats on that, but also stayed the full time to farm) and the SAM was the only one of the 6 who didn't grab the Davoi and Fei'Yin rings during the day.
Thankfully everything else went super-smooth and we got all the running around done in about 5 hours or so (not bad when you have to go to the three goddamn corners of Vana'diel for fucking cutscenes.
In conclusion:
: A posted start time IS THE FUCKING START TIME. Start at 6 means START AT SIX, not 'Meet in Jeuno 20 minutes later because other people are running late.'
: If you have commitments later in the night, don't be one of the late ones.
: If you show up late, you forfeit your right to bitch about the way things are going, because if you'd shown up on time in the first place the whole group would likely be in a sunnier mood.
: If you're the focus of a group gathering, make sure you have everything you need to complete what you're gathering for.
Thank you and good night.
