I must say, if given the chance I'd jump at this to get my old dog back. There are just those bonds that you make with a pet that a new one can never have. I hope we perfect this stuff fast and they open it to the public.

What do you people think on pet cloning? The whole 6th day kinda thing is cool. Repet!

I just did a paper on Human Cloning. I am strongly against it personally. With pets though? Don't know, nothing could ever replace Lucifer...

Nope. I'd buy a new dog before I cloned my old one.

The thing is, your cloned pet is not the old pet. The genetics may be the same, but the experiences would be completely different and it may not react now the way it did then. For all the fun people have with identical twins who live apart and have freakish coincidences in their lives, they're still individuals despite having identical genes.

And frankly, anyone paying $50,000 for a cat when they could get a new one free by skimming the classfieds or grocery store bulletin board really needs to have their head examined.

Maybe if my dead pet had been a dragon or a unicorn, because those would be a bit tough to replace.

This is exactly why I wouldn't do it. You would expect your old pet back, and it wouldn't live up to how you remember it. It will have a different personality and all it would do is tarnish the fond memories of your former pet.

I'd personally rather have a new pet and have no prior expectations. Even if you went into this with the knowledge and acceptance that it will have a different personality, there will still be a lingering hope that it will be like your past pet.

No way. I've lived with cats all my life, and loved them all, but they're irreplaceable. Even when I or my parents got new cats after the old ones passed away, it wasn't a matter of "replacing" them. I'd rather just keep the happy memories I have of the cats that have passed, and love the cats I have now for who they are and not who I want them to be.

I should also mention that I'm looking forward to my future life as the neighborhood crazy cat lady. We have 3 cats now, I think the minimum to gain crazy status is 4. But even I'm not crazy enough to want to clone my cats.

arent the original clones people made experiencing health problems atm?
Basically they're paying to bring back an animal that will get sick and die faster than a regular pet as well as getting arthritis ect.

i would be creeped out at it honestly.

i'm very strongly opposed to any form of cloning, and i believe that it will never be perfected

While I miss my old pets, no I wouldn't go for this.

Sure, they were special, but part of what makes someone or something special is that it doesn't last forever. Beings are not renewable. The memorable times should be created in the now. When a loved pet dies, you move on and either get another one or not. You continue creating memorable times with the new pet. Having a clone look up at me with puppy dog eyes, knowing in my mind that it is not the real deal, that it is a scientific duplicate of my favorite old pet, honestly, is pretty fucking weird. I couldn't love it in the same way, even if I did love it and it was essentially the "same" animal.

Death is part of life.

I agree.

Raising a pet is a wonderful experience if you dedicate yourself to it. It's unique with each one, and frankly, limiting yourself to that one pet would be cruelty to another fine animal whose care could be under your watchful eyes. Raising my dalmatian, Buddy, has been an enthralling experience. Unfortunately, in about 10-14 years he will die. Once I get over that, I will raise another pup from an infant to being an adult.

So many homeless and mistreated animals out there at the local shelters can use a loving home, I couldn't dream of trying to clone an animal.

Nor could I bring another pet into an overpopulated world where pets are put down simply because there's no one who can realistically love them and give them the attention they deserve...

The concept of cloning and the scientific advances needed to come this far and are a testament to the human race, however it is something best left as a power wielded but untapped as far as a complete living being go. New organs, limbs that can be synthesized without creating a full being to tear them from, meh...

All in all, would you really want to take the potshot at a clone and the experience being the same as it was with the former pet or take that step and begin a new adventure with a new friend..?

I'm not a fan of cloning. Once your dog dies, it should stay dead. When my dog died, nothing could replace it.

However, not a few weeks later we got a pure-bred Saluki that fell into our mists. He was severely beaten as a puppy and traumatized to no end. Even raising your hand for a stretch would send this dog cowering in the corner. I'm happy to say that he's healthy, energetic, and a complete blast to hang around with. I love this dog as much as my old dog, and neither can replace each other.

Besides, I could spend that 50 grand on soooo much better things than cloning something.

And sometimes dead is better... just like in Pet Sematary.

I was just waiting for someone to bring that book up.

All living beings are the products of their environments and experiences, the pet will not be the exact same as the one you loved so much, so why bother. It seems to me like this is just a service for people who are unable to let the loved one go and will do anything to bring them back. Unfortunately you are not really bringing them back just a replica.

This'll be a hoot and a holler when we get around to cloning people...if we haven't already  ...be a whole new type of paparazzi, stick'n celebs with needles, sell'n blood instead of photos...

Cloning cats for 50k, what a fucked society we are...

honestly if i could get my pet back to where i wouldnt have to retrain it then i would definitely do it but if its just for one that looks like your old pet... why bother.

I wouldn't do it. You're only cloning the physical attributes, not any of the bonds or what not you created with the deceased pet. It's just cloning nature, none of the nurture (i.e. what was stored in the brain).
