I thought it was clear the term "Bible-thumpers" refers to a certain portion, a certain kind of religious person, and not necessarily any and all religious people.
It's definitely not a generic term for everyone that has a belief or respect for the Bible. Rather, it describes those that shove it under everyone else's noses, with absolutely no provokation, and "thump" it with their meaty forefingers to emphasize each little preachy point.
Hence, the term "Bible-thumper."
