Recently I've been fortunite enough to get off my ass and purchase some RPG's I've never played and have always been meaing to off Ebay, at Zellers, EB, etc. These games range from FFA for the PS (FFV/FFVI), Grandia 2&3, I got FFIII DS for Christmas last year and finally picking it up to play, The Legend of Dragoon (only got part way through it years ago), the Shadow Hearts series and another one but I forget which. Come Feburary, I'll be off until September so i'll be up all night most likely playing these games.
I absolutely love RPG games like the most of us, of course. Some of you are so experianced and really know what you like and look for in an RPG because of how many some of you been through which I think is awesome. Next September, I'm going to Centennial College's Video Game Design program which focuses on narrative and storytelling, its only a 2 year diploma. I'm interested in not only story of video games, but of books, movies, people and my favourite TV show, The Young and the Restless. I'm pretty sure I want to go into game design and help create the next great RPG game. If not, become some sort of writer/script writer. I believe in order to know what a great RPG game is like, I think its best I play all sorts of RPG's, bad and good, and see what makes them hot and not, old gen and new gen.
What I'm looking for is to know what you enjoy in an RPG in detail and what should I look for and review in the games?
I figured I'd cover the basics:
-The character development and personal growth of the character that everyone comes to relate and love so much.
-The over all battle system with its individuality for the specific game and how the battle flows.
-The scenery(sp?) of the game which I believe strongly maximizes its beauty.
-The music which I think is the most important part of any game as it helps capture you inside the story and carries it along.
-Most important of all, the overall story. This branches off to a million different things wether it be suspense, twists and turns, etc.
I have a list of 45+ RPG games I still have to get and play going all the way back to the SNES. Not only replay the ones I have already.
In conclusion, I believe the reason I'm so set on being a writer or creating a story is because I love the fantasy of it. I love being able to take myself and put it in a fun false reality, or receive that old nastolgic feeling of my childhood playing these games. I'm positive we've all been through something like that with any type of Role-Playing games, be it in our childhood or not. If I can create an interactive story like The Legend of Zelda, A Final Fantasy, or a Dragon Quest, than that's the best satisfaction I could ever recieve.
I really would appreciate anything you can offer.
Thanks,
Cua
