Over this summer, as I have free time from university (In case I haven't said a thousand times already I'm doing a degree in Games Design ;P), I'm gonna test my skills and try making an RPG using RPG Maker VX.

I'm mainly focusing on the writing aspect but I'd also like some feedback on the overall presentation from you guys if you'd like to volunteer as beta testers later on down the line.

I'm mainly doing this because I have free time on my hands, but also because, actually making an indie game of sorts is apparently much more useful than getting a degree from university in the games industry, as said from a friend who is currently doing volunteer work for CCP's EVE Online. O_o

So, the long and short of it, is there anyone who'd like to help test this while I make it?

It'll be a free game when it's done btw.

Want to be a real hero in the world of gaming?

Make a Linux client that has interoperability with a Windows client.

I'll test it if system specs are moderate

I'd give it a shot but I have no idea how to do coding for Linux. Plus RPG Maker VX, I suspect, only works with XP and Vista.

I used to make games in the RPG maker. I got quite good at it, even built my own Battle system from scratch :p its quite fun.

Make... something first, then announce it, even if it's just a 1 or 2 chapter demo. Otherwise you're currently going down what probably 95% of all people go down when they announce "i'm gonna make a game!" route.

If the script is going to be the strong point, you still need to do the basics including: cutscenes, story, world map, towns, dungeons, bosses, mobs, weapons, stats, players, armor, items, magic, skills, quests, NPCs, other characters, side quests (not important really but...), music (you'll probably be using freely available midis), graphics (title screen), characters (story, backstory, relationships), game balance, and other things which I probably overlooked for now...

If you can't be assed to do all those, despite RPG Maker VX's dungeon generator and other nifty tools, I think writing a book/novel would be more ideal rather than attempt a somewhat enthusiastic approach to making a game. You're not going to get this done in, say, 4 weeks.

Not putting you down, but I've been there (for a long period of time) and ... made nothing of worthwhile (thanks to FFXI tho...).

Testers will be plentiful, but getting the thing together in the first place, especially if working in a team (artists, in RMVX's case, spriters, and other people) is a collasol task.

I doubt I'd be done in 4 weeks anyway. I have 16 weeks of holidays now that I'm free from University, so I think I have plenty of time. This is something to test my skills anyway as in the second year I need to do a project in games writing (As in actually write up a story O_O), so I need to get my writing skills up.

I want to make this as big as I can, and I mainly stated that I'm gonna do this as a means to motivate myself (If I make it public, then I can actually motivate myself a whole lot more than by not announcing that I'm gonna do it. I'm just weird that way) and to find some help from friends with the testing of the game ^^

I'm also gonna write up a design documentation for this. This is to help increase my portfolio for when I apply for a games design job (Hopefully in Japan).

That said, I'd appreciate all the help I can get for this =D

Edit: I must admit though I have run into one problem with RPGMVX already. It says it can't obtain a trial serial number from the nTitles server. Is there something I need to do?

If he wants to announce something like that out of excitment then I think it's all good.

But Gerry, include me!!! That sounds exciting as hell! You and I have talked before in a pm about how we both want to do this, and I would love to help you out in any way.

By the way, how is it in school with the game design? I don't think I'll get into my school this year due to too many booking it.

A joint project perhaps then? It'll help us both get experience in the industry to make a freeware game. =D

As for University classes for games design, it's incredibly difficult, especially in the first year here. The uni I go to teaches every one of the basics in the first year, which kinda makes things a clusterfuck when your trying to learn several key techniques all at once without much time for an explanation, but it's during that time that you discover what part of the industry you truly want to be in.

Take myself for example, I want to be a part of the scenarios, narrative and character development design teams in the industry, due to mainly, my love of RPGs, comics, manga, anime, etc. Others may find it more comfortable to work on character modelling, or environment modelling, or working on sound, cutscenes, animations etc. You'll usually find yourself doing more than one speciality in the industry nowadays.

Most of all though, it seems that one of the most important things though, according to a friend of mine who does the same course as me, is to do freeware, indie, or volunteer work in the industry. For example, Pixel's Cave Story, Johnathon Blow's Braid, or CCP's Volunteer opportunities in EVE Online.

In any case though, if you'd like to do a joint project with me on this, then we should try and figure out what jobs we need to do for this such as sound design, graphics (Mainly sprite graphics, and maybe some hand drawn art), the battle system, etc. I'll PM you my contact details if your interested in a joint project =)

Send me a copy of the script :p

Ohh Gerry, I just meant the testing, I'd be in on that. Right now I don't know jack about making a game, writing maybe, but until I go to school I'm no use. Thanks though.

Definitely going to look forward to see what you come up with. I'm working on my own thing now. It's fun to have personal projects.

I know you love SE too much Gerry.. So in their honor.. Your main badguy must have silver hair!

Gimme a shout when you're done and I'll test it for you if I have an adequate enough amount of time when you're finished.

What does your orange name mean? :P

An honorable moogle? O.o say wut?

Well, in any case, one thing I can probably say for sure that everything done on this, including the OST (Learning how to make music on Cubase 4 right now at uni), will be completely done by me.

At this time, I'll just put this on the back burner and leave it for the summer time to work on, as I really don't have much of a choice in the timing here.
