I'm looking for an RPG that will kick my ass.

The only real hard parts of FM4 include wagner and the fighting of him, because he fucking cheats.

Edit: some of the missions with darrel are hard too because his team is terrible

Secret of Mana (best RPG for SNES hands down) eight elements that you can summon and you play three characters with cool weapons and armor and and cool bosses, and nice storyline)
Secret of Evermore (Good game always)
Lufia (Good game hands down)
Breath of Fire I & II (cool characters and playable of lots)
Equinoxs (really hard game when i played it)
Final Fantasy III (was a really good game)
Seiken Denstuku (not really sure about the spelling, but it's Secret of Mana II with a different name and it's for Japenese only)
Chrono Trigger ( Time Traveling to future to meet machines, present to meet your friends, and past to meet and join people)

I was too used to FF's style of leveling up at the time, the way they did it in CC made me afraid and confused.
I got stuck on miguel, I think.

It's so easy I beat it first time without walk through. Second time I did with walkthrough to get secrets.

As for Miguel... I understand. His Holy Dragon Sword is instant K.O for Lynx. CC is a very elemental-based game... so think of the elements. Don't use black-innate characters... use as many white as you can. And load them with black elemental spells.

Seen so many suggestions... didn't see anyone suggest Beyond the Beyond. Lol. It's title is suggesting its difficulty I guess. I've played FF4, 5, Tales of Phantasia, Super Robot Wars and Bahamut Lagoon just to mention a few tough rpgs/tactic rpgs. But seriously, none can match Beyond the Beyond. I didn't play it myself though I watched my friend play. Just watching alone deterred me from trying. Average 3-10 steps per encounter, each capable of creaming your party. Very few save points.

If I remember correctly, I had Lynx Harly and some random 3rd who I can't recall. It's doesn't matter though, I lost my blue memory card a long time ago. I -did- have the incentive to play through again recently, I've just gotten to the Other world on my first day of play.

Beyond the Beyond was great. I didn't want to put it down just because it was a pain. Definitely suggest this one ((I can't believe I over looked it and didn't mention it))

Fire Emblem Series, Though I believe it counts as a strategy... Namely Fire Emblem 3-5 for SNES. Make the english counterparts almost look like jokes.

Culex in Super Mario RPG is hard even with items on. Cheap secret bosses...

I'll agree on points for Final Fantasy V, and even though I didn't play it myself, Lunar didn't seem to be a complete write-off.

I just picked up Final Fantasy Chronicles [FF4 (2 in NA) + Chrono Trigger] for 10 bucks new and I'm havin a blast reliving these classics.

I don't know if challenging is an adjective I'd use for these two, but epic storylines with colorful characters and somewhat strategic gameplay are enough to keep me entertained on the side of my MMO habbits and RL. I've missed games like these.../tear

FFIV Hardtype will kick your ass. It's an unwritten rule of gaming.

Most of the grinding xp games was before SNES with all the dragon warriors on the NES, Dragon warrior 3 was my fav of the 4. Crystalis was also alot of fun on NES game play is similar to Zelda.

Try beating FF2 SNES in under 15 hours ^^
7th Saga is alot of xping and money building, and yes as someone already mentioned sometimes it seems like wtf how did i just get beat by a simple xp mob. Sometimes you can just get your ass kicked.
Arcana was fun on SNES.

On PS1 you like games like FFT you gotta play "Vandal Hearts" i own vandal hearts and FFT not sure which i like better.

Thanks for all the suggestions. There's a lot of games I want to try. Front Mission 4 and Disgaea are some on the PS2, but since my last post here, I gave mine away. D: Haha.

I just beat FFIV and VI, but they were pretty easy. With those, the only FFs I haven't beaten are VIII and XII. What would you guys say was the hardest FF, aside from XI?

My vote goes to X, but that's only because of the monster coliseum at the end. Some of those fights were crazy, but good motivation, for me at least, to keep playing. (FFVII Weapons weren't /that/ hard.)

I'd say the hardest FF was FFX simply because it was so bad that it became hard to force myself to keep playing :P

In all seriousness though, none of the FF games were particularly challenging. If I had to pick one, my vote would probably go to the original FF2 for Super Nintendo (not the Chronicles version remake I'm playing now). Dialogue translation was so piss poor that half the time you'd be lucky to understand where to go or what to do next. A minor setback if you happened to read the bookshelves that often told you exactly what to do :P

If you haven't played FF8, you should. Awesome storyline. Probably my second favorite FF game of all time (FF7 and FF3 tie for my top fav RPG ever...its impossible to decide between them).

That's actually one of the reasons I was told to stay away from 8. D: I heard there were a lot of plot holes and a really lame 'orphanage scene'. Also, that the characters were kinda two dimensional and had no real justification for some of the things they did, namely Rinoa's relationship with Squall.

I only played it for half an hour, and I thought it was silly how your party members all run behind you like train carriages. And I hate that monsters level up with you. It kind of eliminates any incentive to exp.

But the first part is just what I heard. It's probably still worth playing.

exping just makes it more difficult, if thats your cup of tea

I guess in some dodgy, perverse sense, but you shouldn't have to work in order to work. It makes it unfashionable. :P
