Imagining the Tenth Dimension

That's a very interesting concept, the only thing is that I had come to understand that the 10 believed dimensions in reality aren't really that but simply 10 physical points, only 3 of which are expanded, 7 other dimensions tightly compressed so they can only be seen through the curvature of the universe.

I could be wrong being this isn't really my area but I was under the impression that time was in fact not considered a dimension but only a rate of change and nothing else.

This confuses me a bit because I was aware of the 10 dimension theory but at the same time was told the other 7 dimensions were really physical not based off time.

It went beyond my realm of understanding once he hit the 5th dimention. Interesting to listen to though, his voice was rather mesmerizing

Never listen to this when you have a headache...because it WILL make it worse. Ouch.

I just woke up, to say my head exploded by #8 is an understatement. My head not only exploded, but I'd say it exploded with the magnitude of an atomic bomb.

Hell, I'd never understand that anyways... ><;;

I used to study this stuff as a hobby, ever read the book 'Hyperspace'? it is a very in-depth book about the theory of transdimensional physics and hypercubes.

6th dimension is time-travelling... cool.

I really liked this slive of cake. I understood it. O.o Though I got kinda lost when they explained the fold on the 3rd dimension, I got it as it went along. Fun.

I got it down pretty much I believe.

So the key to time travel according to this concept is being able to fold and bend dimensions on top of each other to make ourselves appear in another spot.

Wow! Great post I learned quite a bit

If you guys enjoyed this, take a look at this PBS special

And if you really like reading about the Universe, Time, Black Holes etc I suggest reading the book "A Brief History of Time" by Stephen Hawking. It is not overly complicated although it is said only 1-4% of the people who read it understand the entire thing but this is mostly because of the chapters on Quantum Physics that lose almost everyone.

Um yeah..I THINK i got it..but i doubt it :)

That flash video is most likely wrong about how everything works.

First there are a few types of dimensions:
The first is a spatial dimension. Left-right, up-down, back-forth. The major characteristic of a spatial dimension is that every one is at a 90degree angle from every other spatial dimension. So a 4th spatial dimension would make a 4-d cube, called a hypercube.

The second is what firestreak described, a tiny dimension that exists within our realm, they exit on every single point. Think of our dimensions as a 3-d piece of graph paper, and replace the lines with loops (so instead of straigt lines, the path does a roller-coaster type loop). That's not exactly how it works, but it's a good way to visualize it. Inside the periods I type, there would be trillions upon billions of these loops occupying every "point".

The third is time, doesn't need much explaining =)

from the main page decidence linked to itself
In string theory, physicists tell us that the subatomic particles that make up our universe are created within ten spatial dimensions (plus an eleventh dimension of "time") by the vibrations of exquisitely small "superstrings". The average person has barely gotten used to the idea of there being four dimensions: how can we possibly imagine the tenth?
Most string theories call for 3-5 spatial dimensions, and 1-7 curled up dimensions in every point. The videos represented time as a spatial dimension, which could then be manipulated in higher dimensions. However this isn't the case with a majority of string theories. Meaning, that time travel is impossible in most string theories. (alternate universes, and infinante alternate universes where you could all but "simulate" time travel by finding a universe that's just like ours but 1 year behind is possible in many theories).

Not to knock the book down though, the intro mentioned the flash videos come from chapter 1, meaning they probably add relativly easy to understand/cool theories first before other stuff that'll lose people or disintrest them. (They have to sell copies somehow XD )

Deci posted while I wrote this: If you're intrested in the subject the elegant universe a really good program (3hrs I think). Usually when it comes down to time travel, most likely than not it's fringe theories that are used to get attention/intrest rather than likely theories. It's really worth watching because it doesn't load up technobabble and math wich 98% of the people won't understand or care about. (myself included >.>)

edit: One last note, string theory as a whole has quite a few things going against it, including the fact that it's impossible to prove with current technology and will remain so for forseeable future. Also string theory ends up fitting everything thanks to the alternate universes, so no matter what obervations are made at least 1 type of string theory will fit it (hard to disporve string theory).

One random note: a real simple explanation of different infities is.

Follow this pattern: 1,2,3,4...
and now follor this one: 2,4,8,10...

Both go on for infinity, but they are different.

(I remember someone saying they got lost at #8 which was the one about infinities I think)

Heavy stuff.

I had trouble with this the first time I heard about it. I came to realize that people use the word "Demension" in a very different way than what we were taught that it meant in gade school.

Kinda that whole "Forget all you know, or all you think you know" bit. Then you may be able to understand what this is about.

lol hence why everything is THEORY!

That's some cool info. I've always wondered about this stuff. I saw elegant universe and thought is was cool they presented it in a way for most people to understand.

Good scientists put forth hypothesis that are intentionally made to be disprovable.

Is it just me, or was 9th pretty much the same as one of the previous ones? Can't really say that one was a good example of a 9th dimension, as it was the same as a previous dimension <.<;

Was an interresting flash though.

lol whoops, jumped straight to Theory (ment hypothesis), forgot my scientific method. my bad. Every science teacher from highschool is going to kick my ass.

well i mean aren't they all the same basic "points, lines, and folding" but each one is on a greater scale.

Not quite. It's more like, point, line, cross, fold, then line and cross and so forth and end up in a point that covers everything. Starts and ends at a point.

This reminds me of what a teacher of mine told me once. He said that he had a friend that was trying to prove that numbers ended up at 0, that they're not really infinite. He also suggested of linking that to God: Alpha and Omega. The beginning and the end.

Anyways, groovy stuff.
