Ok i ran across this a couple of time, but in game dating, wtf is that. I mean i know in the beginning when you sign on they say dont forget about friends family...etc, it should add, find a girlfriend or boyfriend or something like that. If your married or dating the person in RL than cool, have fun messing around in the game, but an in game boyfriend or girlfrined, husband or wife. I dunno maybe its just me but seems kinda retarded. I just dont see a purpose, i mean is there one? And dont tell me its to get to know someone, cuz thats what linkshells and /tell are for..

I made out with a tonberry once. It was weird at first but I got used to her. Real nice gal.

People were all skeptical, saying like "she'll cut your throat man" or "you know they're just ancient souls that are trapped in these horrific bodies for reasons I won't detail, right?". But you know what? I didnt care. We were made for eachother.

Then she hit me for 8472 points of damage from some grudge. Like hell I'm calling her back after that. Bitch.

Open your mind and keep to yourself, and if you have any questions, it’s polite to keep your judgment to yourself. There isn't any reason to insult something you don't even understand.
(This explanation is just my personal view)
The whole reason for internet dating is hidden in the couple’s personal perspective. I suppose it just makes them feel more wanted in game without the whole informal friend status. Sometimes the relationship is personal; sometimes it’s just for fun. I know two couples off hand hat have separate boyfriends or girlfriends in reality than in game. Go figure. I don't mind it, but I've been there before. ^^ I hope this helps in some way. {Take care.}

Reckon anyone's ever proposed to a GM? Can they even get hitched?
I think there is an employee/member dating protection. :D
Perhaps there is something in the GM TOS saying that its strictly prohibited to date a GM D: I can only geuss how many deep relationships between girls and the nerds they love where broken due to this? :P

It's actually not really out of the ordinary anymore. Considering the advent of online dating services, I don't see how it's such a huge deal. Online dating services are becoming hugely popular these days and meeting someone in a game like this is somewhat similar. You aren't directly looking for someone (there are some that do), but just finding someone in FFXI means you have at least a few things in common which is a large part of the difficulty in meeting someone for the first time. Sometimes, the first step is the hardest and I think meeting someone online reduces it a bit. That aside, I think people take online dating too seriously when they hear about it. Often people aren't in a serious relationship and it's just a way of showing someone you care for them more than just a friend even if it doesn't progress further than that. Others use it as a form of romance without the sort of negative problems that can occur. There have been people who are either married or dating who "date" in game which in any other form would be considered cheating. To them, it's just a fantasy not to be taken too seriously.

Really, just ignore it unless they are doing the stupid emotes mid party and want to cyber in front of you.

I mean doesnt that seem sort of.... hmm..... wrong to have a RL significant other and than have a In game one. I mean i could only imagine that conversation. Per example (and im using made up names if these are someones names im sorry ill edit)

Kaliea: Hey honey how was work?

Lvjazzy: Oh you know we had....

Kaliea (interrupting) oh thats great well Vex and I got married in game like I told you about and than we went back to her Mog House and did some woodworking and than put stuff in her moogles delievery box..

I mean you see where I am going with the rediculous nature of in game dating.....

And if not than

Kaliea (In game pimp) or acutally in game it woudl be (Madame)

That's an awfully extreme "example".

ok it was extreme...ly funny, but anyway, Im not saying online dating is bad, been there, long story, but going into a game for the purpose of dating? Ok maybe if you partied a lot and than whatever, but... i mean sometime people in game are ridiculous and than you ask, OH you married... No we are just married in game. I mean like what if that person had a wife and she saw the screen of what these people write. I think thats what I dont understand. If its single people fine. Married...thats a whole new ballgame...

It gets pretty weird and more detailed than a person would like but I sort of treat it as an element of the game nothing more than it. Like RP which i do a lot of to a certain extent

My opinion is that how can someone fall in love online? Thats just me ^_^;

Don't you think in game relatioships could be just friendly? Its not all about cyboring. Its more of a connection. If I met a really nice gal/guy in game and we had bunches of stuff in common, sure I'd try to get to know him/her more, but at the same time I'd tell my real life gf/bf that I met this really cool guy/girl. XD If they have a problem with that, then I'd have to say thats a bit parinoid. (I'm especially parinoid because I've recieved the shit end of the deal in almost every one of my relatioships that ended badly.)

Now about in game marriage. SE put it in there as a edgy gimmic for the players to form a deeper experience in game. If I wanted to see what a in game married was like and I asked a friend to marry me and he said okay, then come on. I wouldn't pass it up. I heard they are all kinds of fun. ^^

In responce to the multi-person dating... yeah I think thats a bit off myself, but I don't try to get into the drama and mess things up for them. If they have something they like. Don't let me be the one to ruin their joy ride. The two couples I know of in game like that is (I'm saying this by personal trust in the person's word) completly truthful to their irl bf/gf. Just my 2 pents.

it was extreme...ly stupid. Close minded people like you are a serious nuissance. I am prolly the last person to advocate it however a lot of people have the mental capacity to seperate RP from RL. Plus, I agree dating in game while dating irl MAY be a problem, but uh.. if both are single, what's your vantage point then?
You both spend a lot of time in game, you have similar interests.. it makes doing mundane things like some of the quests, coffer hunts, NM camping, and exping a little better. Some people end up duoing a great deal and find they have much in coon and enjoy eachother's presence enough to step it up to an informalish dating. Some of them move on to serious rl dating. I know multiple people who have met on online-games and have wonderful relationships.
Just because you can't comprehend how it would be, doesn't make it "stupid" or "retarded", more or less it makes you such. Please don't post if all you're going to say is such childish views. :/

and Cmdr.. that's freaking hilarious.

Yeah, most people hate that stuff. Its gets silly, but a little /welcomeing kiss never hurt anything right? :P

not like this is first mmo to do this either online dating has gone since mmo where created. In everquest there where times where gm would even come to your wedding. Boy I love there gm system so much better. Gm play a open role and you chould tell where they where, also they whould drop in on events from time to time. Like this one time where we was killing this sea dragon for druid relic weapon and there was 3 gm there to watch.

Some people need the physical connection, some people like to develop an emotional connection. Some people like to become really good friends with each other before dating.

Personally online allows you to open up alot more (at least in my experience) without the fear of face to face reaction. Often times more of the truth comes out when you're not face to face. I actually think an MMORPG with the right ingredients is preferable to a e-harmony.com style online dating. FFXI if you add on phone conversations, talking with the individuals family or friends outside of the game, knowing to at least a degree (and I know I'm going to be combatted on that point) that they're somewhat trustworthy can make a relationship work.

I'd never promote an online relationship as there are alot of weird people out there, but if circumstances arise and you are with a high degree of confidence that these people are geniuine, take it slow and see if it works out. Theres some amazing people in this game who probably will have more in common with you than some random 'hot boy (to quote my roomate-_-)' who is just interested in you because your pretty or easy. It's always so much more rewarding to be really close friends before you start dating. I personally think this community is ideal for meeting such goals if you're open to that type of thing.

I'm sure there are adverse opinions on this though, which is perfectly fine. I'd never promote an online relationship to anyone as there is a degree of mistrust you'll always have, but if you get to the point where you feel comfortable with it, who knows it might work. I've been around online games for quite a while now and know of at least 5 couples who met on the game, got together irl and now are extremely happy. It can happen and its unfortunate that many discredit it as a desperation or a sad way to live.

Personally I think its more sad when I hear about people using their sexuality via webcams or whatnot to obtain 'favors' including but not limited to gil and gear within the game. I'd complain alot more those type of things than someone who happens to form some kind of bond with another player and likes to roleplay their affections.
