Inflation!!!! Wtf!!!!!

Anyone that has millions idle is losing money not the people who buy items that are increasing in value.

Indeed. My own strategy to protect against inflation has been to keep my "spending gil" in the form of easily liquifiable items: gold beastcoins, gold ingots, platinum ingots; because I know that those will at a minimum track inflation and possibly beat it.

I also try to keep any decent armor, even if I'm not using it regularly. For one, to have for level-capped events. But also to have to sell if the price goes through the roof momentarily.

"Prospecting" the market is a very good (though very time-consuming) way to cash in on other people's impatience.

I still hold that even if people were patient, and the newbs farmed up the stuff for the high-levels, and even with the gil sinks; inflation would still exist simply because every time you get a drop, you add "stuff" that has a value to the economy. The only things that take away from that are consumables.

Let me see if I can clarify what I was saying before:
Every time a beastman is killed, gil is added to the game. From what I've seen, I don't see the server keeping a tally of how much gil it has given out in quest rewards and drops and adjusting shop prices and availability of drops to compensate. If it did, this would all be much more controlled.

In any case, the fundamental rule applies: "buy low, sell high." If you don't like the high price on something like onions, for goodness sake just jump on a low-level job or a mule and go farm them--one night will get you a couple stacks. Then decide whether you want to turn them into kabobs, or sell them and let someone else lose money on the kabobs.

Inflation doesn't bother me, but at least it could be stready inflation.

I recently started a huger farming operation. When I did cuttings were selling for 230k, and sappling were selling for around 450-480k. A day after a planted 40 cuttings the price of sapplings dropped from 480 to 390k. All becuase one person decided to sell a stack for 300k.

As you can see that is a huge loss for me. The good news? (if you want to call it that) The price jumps up and down daily. So if I'm very attentive I can manage to get a stack of cuttings, or singles at a discounted rate.

Now if they would just stay at the same price, or even have a steady inflation rate I would be much more equiped to actually make a budget for myself.

The bottom line is as long as you have two types of sellers prices will always fluxuate. The ones that are willing to take a hit to sell stuff fast, and the ones who are willing to wait a while in order to jack a price up. In my opinion they both suck, but hey, we are dealing with real life people here, so we will always have real life problems to deal with as well.

The thing is that while your "investments" have gone up in price, anything you may want to buy has as well, thus your "investments" are just barely keeping up with the market, if at all.

True investments are those who outperfom the market. There are extremely few items in an MMO that will outperform the market.

Inflation in FFXI will never be a flat increase across the board. Not even for non-NPC-purchasable items.

The inflation rate over the last year has resulted in about a 100-200% increase in *most* items that aren't obtainable from NPCs. I can tell you right now that Darksteel and Gold have gone up 200-300%. Zinc is up 200%. Iron is about even. Silver is up 150%. Mithril is down 50%. Platinum is up 150%. Orichalcum and Adaman are up 100%. Adaman is up even less if you go back to prior to the gilsellers mining IC.

Harvesting? Most seeds are up 100%. Cotton has only gone up 100% in the last couple months. Flax is even. Mugwort is just now seeing a 50% increase. Wijnruit is down 50%. I don't remember what cocoons were prior to my absense, but I think they have gone up 100%.

Bee chips are up 150%. Tree Cuttings are up over 300%. Tree Sapplings are up 100%. Silk is up 200%. Those are some of the most-farmed things in the game (chips, cuttings, and silk). All of which are widely varying in their increases. I believe bat wings, another big farming item, have gone up 200% too, but I'm guessing at a price of 2k for the initial price. I've never been a big bat wing guy.

It's not just inflation either. It's the addition of new items/recipes/food, changes in the way jobs are played, changes in how people make (buy) gil, fewer people leveling crafts, and other misc. game changes.

The items in Lockstar's list have seen increases of 400-500%. He actually did make a CRAPLOAD on those investments. Especially the speed belts.

I bought my Sniper's ring a few months ago at the low price of 700k, it is now selling for 2mil. I figure if I hold onto it long enough I'll be able to easily buy my dark 20-30-40 gear back to keep for caps. (I sold them all to get my current equipment)

It really sucks that cuttings went up 200% and sappling only went up 100% seeing as how it takes so long to grow the darn things.

The net profit for making sapplings still went up though. 100% of 200k is still more than 200% of 60k.

Imagiine how much the elem staves would cost if sapplings went up to 600k. No thanks!

Yes, but the yield you get is greater than 1 for 1.
For people who farm tree cutting all damn day and /slap you if you are ever there taking one for yourself...*Cough GS...And they move these in quantity, then it's better for them. For people like me who get a stack of cuttings and grow them over time, allowing me extra time to actually get out of Zi'tah and do something else, the greater than 1 for 1 ratio and 100k more per stack is just fine. ^^
