"Initialize Direct 3D" - Help?

This morning I went to login, but there was another mini-update when I got to the FFXI screen, so I downloaded it.

Then as I went to login, right before it begins to play the intro movie I had the following msg:

Terminated as error occurred in Final Fantasy XI. Failed to initialize Direct 3D. Please check that this computer has the required specifications to run Final Fantasy XI. (-1)

So, now i'm sitting here wondering what the hell? I have always had everything needed to play the game. Could anyone who is computer savy suggest what I might need to do?

reinstall your video card drivers, directx, or all of the above.

That is the redistributable pack of DirectX 9.0c. It is uncommon, though not impossible, for games to break your DirectX package by overwriting specific .dll files or by rerouting certain calls in the Registry.

Thank you! When I get home i'll try the download. As far as i'm aware, my windows are legit because I recall having paid extra for it.
