Interim QCDN Rules - read! - also discussion of QCDN Community Standards

As many of you know, there is an ongoing discussion on the revision of the QCDN Community Standards. As many of you also know, that discussion has been plagued with what I will call disruptions.

As of now the current QCDN Community Standards are suspended, and the following rules apply:
  1. If you are abusive toward other users you will be removed from QCDN. You can swear all you like when making your argument (this isn't Sunday School), but if you resort to repeated personal insults, I will resort to permanently removing you from this forum.
  2. Don't mess with QCDN. I know some of you have your own board set up, and as I have said elsewhere, I wish you the best of luck, but I will no longer spend time and energy on removing references to that board from posts made for the specific purpose of pointing it out, from posts that reference your drama and bring it here, from your user title, from your user profile, from your signature, or from anything else you can come up with. As long as I run this board, I say what stays and what goes, and references to your board go. Should you be unable to agree to this, I will permanently remove you from QCDN.
  3. I, and the QCDN mods, will treat you with the same dignity and respect you display toward other users and the QCDN staff.
In an effort to come up with a Community Standard that is short, easy to understand, as comprehensible as practical, and easy to enforce when necessary, it is imperative that the discussion is free from mudslinging.

Before you reply to this thread, consider that there are only two things given:
- the old Flameboard will not return
- repeated personal insults will not be acceptable

For the most part we are all adults here. As such we should be able to work out a set of rules that are a workable framework by which QCDN can operate.

I am just going to open this up by saying that I liked the old QCDN rules. There were like 6 of them. They were short enough so that people would actually read them, and they were clear in such a way that everyone knew what they meant.

Yes, most of the QCDN Community Standards is copied and pasted with alterations. It's too long, no one will read it (though surprisingly that thread does show a bunch of views). That one goes on me. I should have spend more time formulating what I really wanted to say instead of copy & paste. I was in a rush before I left town for a couple of weeks. The timing was bad, and for that I do apologize.

In hindsight it is also clear that people are much more likely to follow rules they have had a say in. For assuming things will more or less just fall in place I also do take responsibility. It was a complete underestimation of the circumstances on my part.

This thread is hopefully what will be able to rectify that mistake so that QCDN as a whole can move forward.

I think we will also include the QCDN Moderator Standards into this discussion at a later date. I intend to make the mod standards public, so that members have an idea as to what the mod guidelines are. Specifics that pertain to modding will be included there (i.e. the few instances in which editing a post is acceptable).

Rappa asked in Burning Circle guidelines

What about thread crapping? Are these topics going to be cleaned of the one-liners and other stuff or just left to their own devices?
I think past experience has shown that there is no one-fits-all answer for one-liners. Some are funny, some are useless by any consideration.

Perhaps one way to approach the thread crapping issue as a whole would be to consider what is most important in a post? Of course there is the rule that no repeated personal insults are allowed, it's like the Prime Directive, but besides that?

I am sure that we can agree that posts ought to be on topic. Then again, there are plenty of off-topic comments that do not derail threads and still provide useful content.

This is where judgement comes in, there is just no other way to determine what is a thread crapper and what isn't, because there is no way to list all possible crappings.

Personally I would consider things like "lolInternet" a one-line-crapper.
If posters could consider some things before they post:
- does my post add a new opinion to the discussion?
- does my post support someone elses argument?
- does my post oppose someone elses argument?
- is there anyone but me who would find my one-liner funny?

I am sure there are some who would consider that "lolInternet" would qualify as a YES to three of the four questions above.

So again, thread crappers will remain judgement calls, unless someone has an idea for a workable system to handle them differently.

I was beginning to feel bored in the board, but now I that more people will enjoy staying here.

That being said- should you really be able to edit your posts there?

Must have missed it somehow.
I guess I am indifferent about the editing. On the FB it was removed so that flames could not be changed. I am not sure whether no-edit is needed on TBC.

I guess one could reason that it should be no-edit so that arguments could not be changed after the fact.

Its a tough call, cuz some people have been editing posts for clarity, while others just strait up change their story completely. I know pere likes to edit alot, but I couldn't tell you for sure how many are for clarity, or adding a missed point. I think if someone needs to clarify something, a new post is gonna be better anyways since conversations tend to move quickly in TBC thus scanning back a few pages to check the OP is very unlikely. Nice part about not being editable is that it removes that question of "What was changed?" whenever you see the little foot note.

I edit mainly to either Clarify what I say, or because I feel I come off too "asshole"ish since I'm being blunt and unemotional. I think the edit should stay in for those reasons, and if someone changes their standpoint or story than it's other peoples decisions on whether or not to call them out on it.
