Does anyone know how to take movies you download (not from itunes) and import it to your ipod for viewing on your ipod?

In iTunes, use Add File the way you would add an MP3. Sync up and you're set.

It has to be in MP4 format, though.

Doesn't work like that for videos. You need a program to convert it to Apple's video format. I use Cucusoft's Ipod video converter (something like that). Note: the trial version kind of sucks 30 sec limit or something, Buy the full version or get an... uh... not-so-paid-for version somewhere else ;-).

how do i get it to mp4 format?
.mp4?

well could you um /tell me (lol) where this "unpaid" thing is ?

The original post said nothing of conversion, although I did point out it had to be in MP4 format. He just asked how to add it to the iPod.

The program I use is WinAVI. There's a special iPod/PSP version can convert just about any file format over to MP4. It runs $25, which is pretty cheap for the amount of use it's gotten out of me.

Actually, I'm not sure if this works for you guy, but if I drag a movie or video clip into my itunes playlist, and right click the selection I get the option "Convert selection for iPod.". Never tried it this way, I usually use Videora iPod Converter it's freeware and does a pretty good job of converting files to be played via the iPod.

Videora iPod Video Converter is really good. It takes around and hour and a half to convert the video. You just follow the directions, and you will be able to watch videos on your iPod.

Yeah, I forgot to mention iTunes added a video conversion feature to one of the recent updates. I've never tried it out, though. WinAVI is a pretty fast program (can convert a two-hour movie in about 30 minutes), so I haven't looked at the other options.

Yeah, the iTunes encoder is pretty worthless. Whenever I've tried it, I end up with no sound. I use Videora, too, but there are still files it can't understand, so working with certain codecs might require a different encoder or multiple conversion steps.

I've got quite a few videos on my iPod that were encoded with SUPER, but I've never actually used it myself. It might be worth checking out, too. According to their site, it's freeware, too.

alright thanks all of you!

I have a video IPOD, and I have a problem with the movies locking up for a few seconds.. then resumes.. but when it resumes.. sound is lost.

If I back it up or move it forward a few seconds.. sound returns, until it freezes again.

I've been using Imtoo ...

I think I'll try one of the others you guys recommended.

Does anyone know one that I can put a DVD into my PC's DVD drive and drag it over into my Ipod?
Goodness that would make life easy.....

I have this problem as well, and I use Videora. It's annoying.

I haven't had a problem with movies locking up on me. It might be the encoder you're using, but I have no experience with them and can't be sure.

WinAVI can encode directly from the DVD in your drive, but it gives an error message on copy-protected discs...which is most of them. I've been on an encoding spree the past few days. I've only had the video iPod for two weeks, and I'm loading it up with a lot of my favorite movies.

with my current setup I have to use DVDshrink to first copy the movie to hard drive.. then I have to use IMtoo to convert the video file to mp4. I have to choose the appropriate video size and compression. then I get to use Itunes to transfer to the Ipod itself... the corruption could happen at any stage of that....

why I'm looking for something that will do a "one step" taking the movie from dvd, or captured video and convert into mp4.

A lot of encoding processes are really intensive and reading from a disc while encoding can be a real stress on the system. I'll frequently get glitches just copying a CD to my hard drive before copying it to the iPod. If you're copying data from the DVD while simultaneously encoding the .mp4, I can only imagine that process being full of glitches.

Videora, at least, has an 'iPod' button that adjusts all the settings to the right resolution and stuff, but I don't think it's a perfect process for anything widescreen. It'll end up stretching the image vertically. At least it has in videos I've encoded using it.
