Does anyone else's ps3 emit an obscene amount of heat?

I've noticed that it has the power to fully heat any room it is placed in. It was so bad yesterday I went to the store and bought two fans; one for me, and one for Optimus, my playstation 3.

The only plus side to this is all the money I am going to be saving not using my furnace next winter.

hehe, my PS3 is no hotter than my PC really :P but I'd not mind picking up a fan for it (I like cool, rawr!)

How big is your room and is your PS3 well-ventilated? I can't feel the heat on my couch but when (if, rather...) I get up to touch my PS3, whether it be to plug in a controller, change a game out, or whatever, I can feel the heat somewhat, but it's nowhere near as bad as what I remember the XBox360 producing.

I actually read a story where someone left a PS3 and an XBox360 in a glass case, their kids were playing the XBox360, and one of the kids happened to accidentally turn on the PS3 by hitting the PS Button on a controller. The XBox360 died from overheating because the PS3 + XBox360 combination could probably heat your house during the winter.

My bedroom is pretty big. I have my ps3 on the carpeted floor. Is that no good? Now that i think about it, carpet probably isn't the best way to go.

It's a common thing/problem. It's actually the most prevelent gripe i've heard about the PS3. I'dve gone looking for a companion 360-grill pic but... there really aren't any to be found. Must not've been quite so regular on that end although my broke ass couldn't tell you for sure.

Edit: CARPET BAD!

Not only for the obvious insulatory effect but you're basicly feeding your playstation a steady diet of dust and mites and crap.

EDIT EDIT: Found it!

Doing my best to remain impartial until i actually manage to own either. Probably going to remain content to poke fun at both and just get a Wii <.<

My 360s exhaust can't be warmer than 80 degress. Even after a few hours of playing.

Maybe I'm just not a moron and know how to set up a console properly.

Do you suffer from Heat Syndrome?

80 compared to 68 isn't all that warmer. I'd say my room temperature is probably around 70. And while you can feel the difference, it's far from hot.

As for the topic, you might have a busted fan. Not sure if the PS3 has multiple, but that could be the case if it does.

Is there any way to check?

They sell fans and such like this..

Unfortunately for us Elite users, this one doesn't come w/ a HDMI output source thinger so we're SoL for now unless you buy that $5 plastic fan which probably doesnt really do anything. They need to build something that generates cool air as the fans spin so it's actually cooling the system and not just blowing the hot air out quicker.. although I guess that works in theory... anyways there are options Jdawg - firstly I'd start by picking it up off the carpet ^^ (sorry i brought the 360 into it but I was actually looking at this for my system earlier, figured wouldn't hurt to post it up).

My PS3 blows out a lot of hot air also. But the actual system itself is pretty doesn't get very warm at all. My PS2 gets hotter than it. So, no, I don't think there's anything wrong, it's just keeping the hot air out of the system.

Well, the air being blown out is heated by the console, so the warmer the air comming out the warmer the insides.

I don't recommend those at all. I have seen way to many 360s fried because of the Nyko and Pelican cooling fans. The only thing they are remotely useful for is if you fans do die and you have no other reasonable solution.

Since I am in a huge bedroom right now, I actually have 3 seperate stands for my 3 systems. They are off the carpet, away from the wall at least 8 inches, and are all horizontal on the stands. All my controllers are wireless and there are no beverages allowed within a 10 foot radius of my entertainment area, unless you are me. None of my systems get hotter than my PC, but I can definitely feel the heat if I get up close to my 360 and PS3. Of course, I run 2 fans in my room year round because of the electrical systems I am running up in this place.

The best way to prolong the life of your system is to treat it better than your children.

This is the truth. I recommend this for everyone who has it available. It's been about 5 years now and my ps2 is just now shitting itself, and it only started going down hill when I moved into a room that I had the liberty of not cleaning as well as my previous one with stuff stacked upon other stuff.

Gotta put emphasis on this.

I know so many people who have had their ps2's die after only a couple of years.

I still have a first gen ps2, bought the week it came out, and it is just now starting to give me hell.

Also, regularly use a lense cleaner. Even if you dont think your ps2 needs it, do it anyways. Blaze sells a good one. Just use it once a month. It helps.

I had my original PS2 up until I got the PS3. I bought it the day it came out. Taking care of your systems is the best way to prolong their life.

Yes the PS3 is in hot mode all the time its on. But since I have my gameroom with air conditioner I don't notice untill I put my hand on it. D=

Thanks for reminding me why I don't take your stupid ass seriously.

Why, because he makes sense? Stop trollin' him because it doesn't have the effect you're looking for, I promise. I'm going to tell ya, Skaw is one of those guys that rarely ever misses the mark or is looking for a fight. There is really no reason to be that way.

sadly, most people don't understand that and when things fuck up they go with "faulty machinery" excuse. Though, there definitely were problems with the PS2, they were avoidable. Though, I'm sure there were plenty of actual bad ones that got out there, it happens with every system :P but not as bad as so many made it out to be.
