I'm actually very fond of Abyssea, when you get right down to it. It's a rare case of SE making an endgame activity that is rewarding on multiple levels. If you know what you're doing, you can rapidly accumulate abyssites that make it much easier to stay in the zones pretty much as long as you like; whenever we start getting low on time, we take a half-hour or so and farm up enough time to keep going. You get experience points for doing this, and lots of them. For example, last night, during what was essentially a focused Carabosse run (we got the remaining gems our SAM needed for his Empyrean), we wound up with a net loss of like 10 minutes of time, a net gain of something on the order of 120,000 experience points, and all of that in some on the order of 4 hours.
So, to put it in perspective, we were getting 25k/hr... doing endgame.
To top it all off, of course, there are the Atmas. Keep a good weapon balance available to you, and you can wind up with some very pleasant bonuses for the duration of your stay in Abyssea that cost a minuscule amount of cruor to activate. Things like the Atma of the Minikin Monstrosity, which gives 10mp/tick refresh, +50 INT, and a reasonable amount of -Enmity. Sure, you can only have two of them active max at the moment, but SE might be crazy enough to let us get more in the future.
