Find the maiden name of a friend's mother? All reasons aside, I'm not going to say this is for mischief, and I'm not going to say it's not. Just curious.

Depends on how it's used.

To place a lein, find a family member or decedeant (sp?), fulfill a will, verify criminal record for employment, other such legal reasons, etc, etc; yes.

To steal someone's identity; no.

Either way it's only illegal if you get caught. ><

I tried that shit with my step-dad (was simply figuring out a discrepency when him and my mom were out of town) by saying i was him and they asked for his mothers maiden name... im on to you
 
It has to do with Canadian magic, all casting of Canadian spells require the mother's maiden name as a component.

Well, not quite. Again, I'm not saying what it's for. Just curiosity!.
 
Hack into friend's webmail account, broadcast photoshopped images of said friend having explosive monkey sex with some random hairy four-legged creature, change password, exit. Mistra will perhaps leave a week-long trail of clues ultimately telling him what the password is; by the time he gets it, everyone who received the picture will have replied and left their comments and general "dont call me" messages.

I'm guessing you already know his pet's name, favorite movie, street he grew up on, etc.
 
There are a hundred ways to "social engineer" that information, and it's free. Or you could spend the 19.99 and just have it given to you.
 
i skip trace ppl who default on car loans if your friend is over 21 <most people under 21 are hard to trace> i would trace your friend then from there his parents then i would trace his mom to her father and get her maiden name
unless they pay for every thing with cash this takes about 2-5 mins
