I know that this issue is as old as MMORPGs with customizable characters goes. But man does it really tick me off sometimes.

Just because two pieces of armor do not look perfect together does not mean that you shouldn't use them.

It drives me nuts when someone won't use the best gear they can afford/use simply because "It just doesnt look good."

Example: Dunes (yea, i know.)

Partying fine, PLD reaches level 10. Still using leather armor. Someone says "Oh, I have a pair of coarse leggings, scale greaves,coarse gauntlets and a facemask you can have. I wont need them."

"EEW no, that would look horrible."

Somone just turned down FREE, BETTER, more EFFICIENT gear just because it doesnt look perfect. W T F?

This kind of crap really makes me twitch sometimes because it doesnt necessarily stop at the low levels. I had one guy complaining that we cant do our Promyvion run because our PLD was using a mix of Chainmail and Eisenplate gear. Most of it was Eisenplate except his facemask and leggings. Not exactly a party breaker. But the guy complaining just wouldnt give in.

SUCK IT UP AND MIX YOUR DAMN GEAR.
 
This is a big thing especially with subligars, like the republic subligar (+5 ATK, +5 Ranged ATK) it is a great piece of melee gear and can last for a long time because there sometimes isn't much better than it, but people don't wear it because people poke fun at it. You'll get the last laugh when you outdamage all of your melee friends because you don't give a damn about fashion in a GAME.

I've had that conversation in the dunes with some newb who was building a party. He told me some of the pieces I was wearing looked bad and I should take them off. When I explained that stats are more important than looks (and mentioned subligar), he said "I'll never wear a subligar!"

I disbanded.

justacorps makes me look like a lepracaun(sp) but hell if it makes me more effective sure why not
 
Yesterday I saw a character (not going to say who) with mix and match gear that had POS stats just to show a little more skin. Fine, if you're running around town (if you seriously want people to look at your toon that much), but seriously, when it comes to end game events, put some fucking clothes on and do your job.

Yeah... I hate it. I feel like stabbing my eyes out every time I see a mage wearing Jet Seraweels over Mahatma Slops. I mean, wtf?

Mahatma Slops are:
1) cheaper
2) have the same -enmity
3) have +1 more to INT, MND and CHR

Every time I argue with peopl eabout it, they go "They look better", "Mahatma Slops are ugly!" etc. The most stupid argument I've heard is "Well, Jet Seraweels doesn't have any negative stats". Yeah. I'm sure those extra points of STR and DEX will make a melee BLM a whole lot more efficient against Tiamat, Fafnir etc. =/
 
I only use Jet seraweels for soloing. Anything besides that is just retarded.

I'll take him on bare handed if you supply the ribs.. otherwise I'm turning Chico into ribs. And subligar is just nasty for on topic.
 
Ok, so lets try a little scenario.

SE releases two new pieces of armor. The effect is different depending on which job you are.

The first piece of armor is a subligar:

WAR: STR+50
WHM: MP+400
RDM: Enfeebling Skill +30
DRK: Accuracy +60

etc.

The second piece is a normal pair of pants. We will say they look like slacks for the sake of argument:

WAR: ATK+2
WHM: MP+10
RDM: Enfeeble Skill +2
DRK: Accuracy +3

Now which piece are you gonna take? The subligar or the slacks? Are you going to avoid subligar at all costs just because it makes you look like the amazing traveling whore?

Ninja Edit: THIS IS ALL THEORETICAL. Dont bust on the absurd stat bonuses.
