When thinking about comparison of gear for specific slots and/or gear-sets, several options exist. The most common is probably just examining the individual piece and its effectiveness in the versus the alternatives. However, most "end-gamers" like to get an overall picture of what the set will return and what the stats compared to what you will be fighting for that set.
This produces a couple of options that I thought I would lay out here. These may appear a little "over the top" in work compared to what the return is, but I thought it would be nice to post my method and a new one made available via www.ffxiah.com for anyone interested.
1) Preparing an items list - This is useful in either method below as you need to have a general idea of what you have to choose from. I personally use two lists: a) Items I currently have to put into a gearset and b) Wishlist Items that could be put into a gearset for maximum effeciency. (The wishlist is also a "playground" to determine effects of changing a single piece and allow comparison for what you currently use)
2) Determining Priorities - Each gearset you build should have a stat priority to base choices off of, save the obvious (PCC in TP set if needed, or BLM AF1+1 hands in HNM nuke set) For example, on BLM priority for Enfeebling magic set is "+Enf. Magic Skill => Magic. Acc. > INT > MP" and on THF SA "DEX > STR > ATK".
3) Putting it all together - Lastly, you need a place to compile these efforts so you can see what the overall effects are without sitting in your MH and changing gear 85 million times. There are a couple of options here, and the 2nd one I use below is what sparked this post. I still prefer option A because of the flexibility of copy+paste, but for those that just want to select from the item list, option B is very nice and easy.
a) Excel(or GoogleDocs / Staroffice for those that don't have MS) - Make a layout that you can include your effective stats you wish to compare in, update the formulas appropriately (I included the Cure5 formula for WHM and Accuracy forumula for DD). Then you can just copy+paste the items into your "wish list" and see the difference in new gear vs old gear (or what you plan to buy). Here is a screenshot of what my BLM Nuke set used to look like and the formulas in action (very outdated).
b) FFXIAH "Sets" option - ffxiah.com has built in a nice new feature that allows you to build "sets" for your character directly on their site. You have to have an actual account (but not verified via the AH option they have). Additionally, you can make the "set" viewable like I have for this example nuke set to either show others or ask for feedback on. If anyone uses windower macros for gear sets, the code is included as well for quick copying.
The instructions for setting this up are pretty straightforward.
1) Logon to your ffxiah.com account.
2) Click "Members Menu" on the right and "Item Sets" from the sub-menu.
3) Click "Create new set" and off you go (notice the "Make this set public" and the link that will be provided after you enable this)
4) Click the "Add" button and type in the name of each item. There is no verification on this feature, so they can be items you own or "wish list".
Hope this helps the gear tweakers out there. Posted under general forum as this could be used for any level of the game. I use it for all my comparisons, but thats just me.
Thanks,
Meth
