It's the economy, faggots.

EDIT: Disregard.

Despite protesters outside the Mandarin Hotel holding signs reading "Gay Uncle Toms", the DNC managed to raise $1 million at their LGBT fundraiser on Thursday... Up from $750,000 last year. Way to send a strong message to the administration.

I had a big 3 paragraph post written out, then decided I could make the same point in one question.

If a big business, fundamentally conservative, right wing, gun toting, ecology destroying, war mongering republican politician emerged on the scene and promised equal marriage rights for the LGBT community, would he get the LGBT vote?

Fact is Obama knows your vote and your money isn't going anywhere, he's more interested in placating mainstream America. That won't change until the LGBT voting block gains a higher percentage of the population, or produces their own candidate to take away part of the Dem. voting base. It's unfortunate, but it's the truth. Being a vocal minority has gotten you about as far is it can, it's time to do more.

I also wrote a semi-thesis in response, but decided to keep in brief.

The LGBT voting block has a voter turn out which is double that of the general population. You are right, the majority always vote for Democrats, and thus would not fall for the hypothetical Republican you pose. However we tend to support the candidate within the party which is more gay-friendly. Which is why gay voters leaned heavily towards Hillary Clinton during the primaries.

So the few limited options available to LGBT Americans are as follows:
  • Vote for Obama during the next election: Hope for the best on the wings of more campaign promises.
  • Back another Democratic candidate.
  • Vote for the Republicans and return to the dark ages.
  • Vote Independent.
  • Vote for nobody.
  • Move to Canada, the Netherlands or Spain.

Pretty fucking bleak if you ask me. The LGBT community should instead be focusing on mobilising mainstream America into fighting alongside us. Which is difficult as mainstream America has a tendency to be blase about most things.

Edit: Excluding, of course, the straight allies in our midst! I cannot emphasis enough how much the support means.

Doubtful. We don't tend to be one-issue voters.

We've reached the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots!

I highly doubt Obama is going to be the knight in shining armor for LGBT people out there like he says he will be. I hate to say it but this guy enjoys talking the talk but finds it difficult walking I suppose.
