So I know that they're keeping the job system more of like a "fluid transition" where it is easy to move from one job archetype to another. However as we all know, MMO classes always fill a certain quota of predictable (not being rude) classes. Basically my question is this: We know that every MMO has a pet class, Do you think they'll bring the Dragoon over from 11 or do you think there'll be some change to it?

I just had a good idea to incorporate a pet class while being vaguely original. Take that chocobo breeding system from FFXI and mix in some battle mechanics and you're got yourself a new class, Chocobo Master! They raise a variety of colorful chocobos to do the fighting for them. Same idea as a beastmaster pretty much but instead of taming, you raise your own chocobo's to wreck havoc on your enemies! Plus you can ride them in battle!

So many people would be all over a job like that, myself included and I never played BST or Smn or even Hunter in WoW.

That was pretty damn creative and seems like something they could realistically could add with out breaking the lore.
A few friends that i have spoken to that played FFXI with us were DRG fans and have said that , to them, FFXIV wouldnt' be the same if they didn't add a DRG class. But again going by what you've said, it seems totally plausible that they could make a BST/DRG class by having a class that is able to tame (Similar to Hunters and BST) but are able to tame a much more permanent pet- Like DRG.

HELL who knows maybe if they add DRG they'll actually make the wyvern grow! not stay that small lil size the entire leveling process

I hope they make a bst type of job that allows you to charm all regular mobs, and even some intelligent mobs, like yags, with restrictions of course, i hated the fact that i can't tame cockatrice, manticores, and some other bad ass mobs! Especially undead, i want to be able to charm undead/arcane/dragons, make it another class if you friggin have to, but jeez give us options!

I think the main problem with FF11 not is there are to many jobs. I think that that any added jobs would just overshadow what all the other jobs do already. I think what they need to do if anything is add a new feature that allows you to steal the full traits from another job. Like replace your normal sub job traits with another but keep the skills form that sub job.

They can even require merits or a long quest to unlock. I think that would add a god deal of customibility and even to strengthen some job that were at least when I played were lacking that something.

imagine a thf/war that steals the ninja traits that's a thf/war with dual wield attached on the character not the job, that would make thiefs alot better DD instead of a TH whore/ hate tool.

now I know there are gonna be some jobs that will take full advantage of this and be op all over again like nin/ anything rdm/ alot of things. But this would open up some other jobs like warrior to be able to tank on a equal plain as pld and nin. Warrior could pick the traits of nin, pld, thf get creative on the sub job because they already have vok and tank along side of them.

I don't think Dragoon will have a pet this time around, as this time Dragoon's called Lancer. I'm guessing the jobs will be

War
Archer
Lancer
Marauder
Gladiator
Pugilist

Magic
Thaumaturge
Oracle or Fencer
Priest
Illusionist
Elementalist

Hand
Chemist
Tailor
Woodworker
Tanner
Chef
Blacksmith

Land
Miner
Herbalist
Fisherman
Lumberjack

Lancer is the DRG class, FFXI was the only FF that you had a wyvern with you, in previous ones it was just the DRG itself.
In XIV I can see them reverting back to that style.

And SE has said that at the beginning there will be no pet based disciplines, granted that may change, but for now no pet classes at launch.

I'm kind of glad there won't be any pet based disciplines at start. I like pet classes but SE has been horrible at balancing them historically..

Where did pull the job titles from? That was pretty exciting to read. I hope they dont do away with DRG since it's so quintessential trademark of FF next to Moogles and the name Cid

Lancer is Dragoon, they didn't do away with it.
It's also been called Lancer in the original translations of FFV and FFT.
Just don't expect it to be like the XI DRG with a Wyvern, as that is the first FF that DRG's had a pet, we will undoubtedly see Jump though.

Pugilist is Monk, Archer is Ranger, etc.

I didn't pull it anywhere. Archer, Lancer, Marauder, Gladiator, Pugilist, Thaumaturge, Lumberjack, Herbalist, Chemist, Talor, Tanner, Blacksmith, Chef and Woodworker are all classes that's been revealed by SE. Fisherman, Oracle/Fencer, Priest, Illusionist and Elementalist are classes I expect will be in the game.

To be honest, I'm guessing Rogue/Thief might show up too, but for all we know Steal etc. could make an appearance on the Archer job. I do hope Mime makes an appearance, SE stated they had the entire job done for WoTG, but that it was replaced by Scholar. If I'm lucky they might throw it in to FFXIV :D

I like the idea of changing up the classes tbh. I'm a DRG myself and feel that the wyvern would gladly be traded for a slight boost in stats or even gear for that matter lol. I'm more interested in how they will allow a person to change classes, eg.. skill tree's and "specs" like in WoW, or the job system in FFXI. Because if it is truly profession based, that will make the decision of which class to be epic! I pesonally, like the idea of removing stats by race to allow for a more fun environment ^_^

tbh, I get the feeling you won't "level" in to stat in this game. I'm guessing it'll be more like this;

Glad goes out to solo. He'll have a Sword skill, a Shield skill, a Defense skill, an Evasion skill and some other skills likely.

When he goes out to solo, attacking mobs grants "experience points" towards his Sword skill. Higher Sword Skill means he gain access to better weapons, as well as increasing his potency (meaning Damage and Accuracy) with Swords. Using job abilities and spells improves their efficiency (read; they level up) to increase their potency, thus making them stronger. Once it levels up enough, you it grants you access to a new ability (Fire > Fire II > Fire III > Fire IV > Flare), assuming your Skill (for example, Fire Elemental Skill or Ice Elemental Skill) is high enough. If the Gladiator get hit, his "Defense" skill increases, giving him improved Defense, while Evasion from Evading grants him new Evasive abilities, and Shield Skill gives him decreased damage from blocking (and maybe self-heal skills and Enmity Increasing skills?).

I'm also venturing a guess that stats are obtained through certain Guildleves, and not through leveling your character.

So not as much leveling the job/class itself, but more leveling of its skills to improve its abilities in those traits and allow the use of better weapons/gear/spells? Interesting, I kinda like it. I hope that this turns out well and less of a time suck when trying to "exp" or other events. =)

Aye, supposedly SE is trying to depart from the classic level-based scheme of pretty much every other MMO.

To be honest, I'm vaguely skeptical as to how well it's going to work, but we'll see... It certainly has the potential to be a lot of fun, and add a certain depth of complexity and versatility to the game that most MMOs are lacking.

So it's going to be kind of like Ultima Online's skill gain? That'd be really cool, i always liked that style of play with UO.

They've also implied that it's going to be a bit like FFIX, in that certain weapons might grant certain skills, etc.

It's all rumors and speculation at this point though, really.

So basically FFII's experience system, just in an MMO, where the more you use a certain weapon type or spell it levels up. Cure I- Cure II - Cure III - so on
If you got hit, your HP/stamina goes up, if you dodge, your evasion goes up, and when you attack your strength and accuracy can go up.
The more you cast your MP goes up, if it's a white magic spell spirit goes up, if black magic intelligence goes up, etc.

I wouldn't mind playing an MMO utilizing that system from FFII (and SaGa games)

That could make for an interesting game play, especially for people who don't get the time to grind out lvls and devote a second job worth of time into it. Lets hope all these speculations are accurate and the dreams of us working class people being able to enjoy an MMO at our pace actually come true!!

Yeah, that was one of my guesses too. We do know that skills can level up (the German alpha play had "Red Lotus" leveling up in one of the videos). I thought it might either be that abilities level up and eventually "evolve" in to the higher version, or that you gain new abilities through equipment. The problem I found with that is that a mage would have to level his staff skill in order to learn new spells, which is something I don't particulary fancy, and I wouldn't like that very much. I suppose they could be smacked on armor, though, and that you require a certain skill level in order to learn them from the equipment.

Either way, it'll be interesting to see how it works, and I suspect they'll have a playable version focusing on the battle system (along with more info) on Feb 28.
