Judge sets bail on a 12 year old boy.

They died out that's what happened. Hitting people is wrong, no matter who does it in my opinion. The only person to ever hit me was my dad, and it had a negative effect I feel. I respect my mum a hell of a lot more than my dad and she's never hit me, there are other ways around things. We are not cave men anymore.

It really just depends DW, you say you respect your dad less because of it, but in fact, I respect my parents more (and over all talked back less, misbehaved less, etc) due to said ass kickings and such. My siblings, not so much. Yeah, I feel they have it easy since my parents never came down on them the way they did to me. What do my siblings do? They talk back, raise their voices and yell back at my parents, they've been caught sneaking out of the house in the middle of the night, and other sorts of shit I never did due to that respect that was instilled.

I'm sorry, but the whole "time out in the corner" thing just doesn't work in my opinion. Look at how many idiot kids we have nowadays going around gang-raping girls, lighting people on fire, or sodomizing and drowning kids?! It's a lack of discipline and correction on behalf of the parents that's leading the way. Fortunately, you seem to be the exception, but other kiddo's your age don't seem to be following in your footsteps man.

My mum listened to me when I was growing up, she showed me respect ever since I understood what it was. It may be because I had to grow up looking after her that I gained respect for her and how she used to run the house as a one parent family because my dad was never in. I respect my mother because of what she used to do and how she looked after everyone despite her state, my dad would hit me for stupid reasons not listen to what I had to say and it caused a lot of family arguments

I'm no way saying that I haven't raised my voice to my mum, I have. Countless times at that, but if you can express your emotions and get how you feel out there and still have a good relationship then that has to count for something. I never ask my dad for any help with anything, I seriously don't know why my parents insist on the staying together thing but whatever.

to. If I want to go out my mum will ask what time I itend to be home, if I'll be back for dinner and she'll be sure I never leave without my phone. She's close with all my friends parents so if I end up ringing at 11PM and say I'm sleeping over tonight it's usually never a problem. If you're parents are too strict with you, you are bound to get behaviour like that.

It's also a case of if you abuse these permissions your parents give you, which my brother does well it seems.

ok, I need to disagree with you here, there's is and always will be a differnece between just hitting your kid and disciplining them. most males have problems with their fathers, you know why? the male ego, simple as that. diciplining your child shouldn't be a fucking wag of the finger and a time out, that teaches children that no matter what you do the worst you will get is yelled at. The last time my mother hit me i was in 7th or 8th grade i wanna say, i was lazy at school, didn't do my work etc. etc. the reason it hit home so badly is because here i was, all of what 12 13 years old? being whipped with a belt by my mother and it was the shame of it happening more than the pain that really made me slow my roll, so yeah done right physical discipline will and does work

Done right, you only need to do it once or twice. After that, a hand drifting towards the belt or even worse, the sound of a belt clearing belt loops is enough to set a kid straight.

Exactly, its one thing to discipline your kids by hitting them when they really deserve it, and beating them senseless for no apparent reason. In order for a corporal punishment to work, the person needs to know what they did first.

You sound like a great kid DW and props for that. My sibling aint the worst, they show their good side when it comes down to the nitty gritty, but they tend to step out of line, and get nothing more than a verbal, for what I used to get smacked for =P

Maybe I hold a grudge for them getting special treatment, who knows, but the fact remains that a good smack or belt whipping can go a long (and good) way towards improving a kids behvior, as long as its administered properly.

The last time I got it I was 13, always refused to get out of bed in the morning and gave my mother such difficulties it often made her late for work. Not good eh.

Well I was also in basketball which meant I needed to be at practice an hour before school, and I wouldn't get out of bed, so my mother was going to leave me there and I would have to make my own way or miss practice.

When I heard the car start I jumped out of bed, ran down stairs pissed off and yelled after my mother (down the street) 'I hate you'. NOT SMART.

She turned her car around as I busted ass back inside and hid in the living room, when she came in she dragged my ass upstairs to my room where she proceeded to spank me, literally, over her knee at 13. That hit home. I was not only embarrassed because I felt I was too old but also because I had said what I did.

I have all the respect in the world for my parents, you could ask any friends of mine and they would tell you I worship my parents and I was a pretty bad kid and got slapped more times than I can count.

And no one can say it doesn't work, because it sure as hell does, and no one says there is 'always' another or better way because kids differ. Some need more than others for it to hit home.

Thought I'd chime in again, I know not many people will actually care for my opinion too much as I am the younger generation who has it too easy etc etc.

I like the way you managed to make this comment based around one statement I made. Either way I feel I was raised in a good enough way.

Exactly, he shouldn't get a special treatment if anything he needs to learn he is equal to everyone else so he stops this violence crap.

Well I disagree with your assessment of spanking. Sometimes the fear of hell needs to be placed into the kids. It's not so much spanking that does the treatment it's the whole hand raising, and threat behind it that in my opinion should be the thing that should get the kid to behave.

<.< geez and i thought i had it bad. At the end of the day kids need a mix of discipline and understanding. My parents both disciplined me through the whole spanking, not allowed to go out ect but at the end of the day i still feel happy enough to talk to them bout anything. I think nowadays that yeh laws and discipline arn't forced upon kids, i could tell it weren't with the generation below mine from when i was younger. At the end of the day though, if you get to much discipline you'll end up hating your mom and dad which can have a big influence on how you feel about older people in general. So i do agree with DW in a way but disagree with him in another way <.<

There is no 'too much discipline'. I think what you may mean, and correct me if I'm wrong is when parents take it too far, which is actually abusive behavior. Freaking out and hitting your child(ren) for any small thing is ridiculous. Different crimes deserve different punishments.

yeh pretty much

Have most of you guys never taken any kind of family class or been taught anything in the subject of child psychology?

First of all, "taking 'em out to the woodshed" is an incredibly oversimplified method that has been proven time and again to be a pretty poor method. You might have respected your parents regardless, but it is highly unlikely it is simply because you feared getting pain inflicted on you.

On the flip side, obviously letting kids do whatever the fuck they want is no way to raise a a child either. Its just about going half way. You can obviously achieve this in a variety of ways, but you've done a pretty good job if you manage to have your kids get to the point that the punishment is simply the idea of disappointing you. You sure as hell don't need to beat your child into respecting you, and if anything hitting kids just leads to less respect towards their parents. Even if they do act well behaved, fear is not the same respect.

This is of course still pretty simplified in-itself...on-topic though, I think its a practical move by the judge. He isn't the one that has raised the kid, but hes attempting to save this kids life using more creative methods. He sure as hell can't order anyone to beat the kid, and sending kids to juvy is hardly a sure-fire way of making kids improve their behavior. I like that hes willing to try something new to see if it works. You can't underestimate how much a gaming system to little kids means to them these days, it is a new twist on raising kids that is obviously difficult to work with.

Well shit, one thing I know is several of my friends all got smacked growing up. I've had this discussion with most of them and they all feel they will serve the same flavour of discipline because they believe it works.

They weren't afraid of their parents, I wasn't afraid of mine, we were afraid of acting out, of being brats and the repercussions of being brats. Not because their parents beat them, but because they DO get in shit. They don't get time outs were they stare in a corner throwing temper tantrums and get away with it.

Screw that, temper tantrums alone will buy my child a tan ass!

Oh, and another reason I think it works on most kids is it made me VERY aware of the actions that may buy me a good crack. I knew almost immediately after doing/saying something if I was going to get in shit. But it's not like I walked on eggshells around my parents. Quite the opposite actually. I got in shit a lot lol. I was such a bratty kid, but by the time I was 12-13 I was pretty damn respectful. You see all these kids these days calling their parents names, swearing at them, screaming at the top of their lungs at them! HEH, I would NEVER consider doing that, ever.

MY parents are amazing!

I have.

And I still plan to beat my kids, assuming I ever have any. Not capriciously, as is the case with most of the studies that show a negative effect, but as an established end consequence of a series of choices that the child makes on his own.

Psychology, and child psychology in particular, are overrated.

Except the kid is a repeat offender. If it were the kid's first time I'd agree, but he needs to be taught a real lesson. He needs to be placed into juvenile detention. The steps for trying to prevent his bad behavior has already be done, and it didn't work.

Psychology, and child psychology in particular, are overrated.

Also a slice of this.

exactly, i got hit a couple times as a kid when i deserved it, but it didn't make me fear my parents, it made me fear them when i knew i had done something wrong, but that kept me in line.

besides, my mom is a red-head, so she had that "your fuckin dead" look down to a science, she didn't even have to touch me to put the fear of god in me. anyone who's grownup/lived with a redhead knows what i'm talking about.
