Just got 12, Need some help

You'll have the ability later to set gambits, you'll know when you can, when someone gives you an annoying tutorial about it, lol

(I assume you're at the part where you get panelo in your party..)

EDIT: Now that I think of it.. 12 is a little high for that point in the game... Try going to your menu, and there should be a Gambit menu if you're at a certain point >.>

Balthier explains Gambits when he joins the party.

I think Kink's at the part where Penelo joins for a brief moment and says that you should turn on Gambits. All it really is at that point is automatically running up to the mobs when you have them targeted. Once Balthier and Fran join, they go into some depth and you can start using the Gambits menu(although to be honest, you've got bare bones gambits til you get back to town)

Just remember. Balthier>Everyone else.

Yeah I was just going over that thought during a cutscene about midway through the game just recently lol. I keep telling myself that maybe later, vaan has a history or family history that ties in with the main story but I'm having my doubts now.

Basch and Ashe are more like the lead roles, at least to me. Balthier is pretty close too. Vaan....maybe in Revenant Skies....but definately not this game.

Maybe I missed the boat but I'm always running around with Vaan.. I like the confused kid role he plays. He does decent damage and has good all-around stats and pyroclasm.

He's a great character, don't get me wrong. But I think Ashe and Basch's background, personality, and goals more or less overshadow Vaan, even up till the very last minute of the game. However, the majority of the negative posts I've read concerning Vaan and Penelo are made by people who don't seem to grasp the idea that maybe every FF game doesn't need to center itself on one or two characters. I might be mistaken, but I got the idea that square wanted every character to be important in their own way, not just one person being helped by a whole cast of other characters.

Focusing on every character is all cool and stuff. But people aren't complaining about it not centering on one character. They are complaining about the fact that 2 of the 6 main characters have almost -nothing- to offer to the story, at all.

lolPenelo and lolVaan.. though this isn't exactly the first FF where there seemed to be thrown in characters like.. (and not optional ones I mean).. say.. hmm.. Aramant(sp?) from FF9? He seemed kinda.. pointless other than a few minutes of "you got me in trouble" then "oh, sorry" then "it's cool.." O.o

Amarant had a great back story with Zidane.

Vaan: An orphaned child of the Kingdom of Dalmasca. His only family member was Reks, who at 17 joined the resistance to convince King Raminas not to go through with the treaty of the Archadian Empire. Reks was thought to have been betrayed by Basch, but it turns out he was murdered by Basch's twin brother, Noah Gabranth. Since that day, Vaan has hated the Archadian Empire and Basch, for to him they took away his true life and family. He dreams of becomming a sky pirate so he can 'take back' what the Archadian Empire took from Dalmasca.

Penelo: Penelo, too, was orphaned as a result of the war. Her only family, her brothers, were killed in battle, and like Vaan, was taken in by Migelo. Though she doesn't carry as much hate for the Empire that Vaan does, she wants peace above all else, and is primarilly the 'happy' and 'hopefull' trait of the characters. She has grown extremely close to Vaan in a brother/sister sort of way, and seems to want to be by Vaans side and to keep him out of trouble, for Vaan is somewhat reckless.

Both characters represent the problems the war caused for many of Dalmasca's children. Hatred towards the Empire, ruined lives, and a somewhat 'hopeless' future. Vaan's ambitions throw him right into the path of Vayne Solidor's conquest for power and Ashe's desire for revenge, and he comes face to face with the one man he hates, Basch. After learning the truth behind everything, that Basch's name had been ruined, and the king and Reks had been murdered by Basch's twin, Vaan focused on helping Ashe obtain her vengeance. As the game progresses, Vaan (thinking about what it is he wants out of life), decides to help restore Dalmasca from the opressive Empire that's in control, wants to help his new friends win back their lives, and be free in the clouds of Ivalice.

So please, if that makes them 'randomly inserted' characters, then we might as well consider every FF full of 'randomly insterted' characters. You can gather most of what I just said from the first 4 hours of the game, when this much would have taken the majority of the game to figure out in most FF's (and usually square would spoon-feed most of the story).

What I mean is that they could do just as well as a non-playable character of sorts.. sure they have their hatred for the empire but so did 99% of the world (that wasn't the empire before the war). Personally I don't mind them being playable so much I just have a problem with vaan being the main character >.> he's not main character material.. Ashe is D:

Vaan's hatred for the empire is pretty much why he's tagging along. Everyone has a common goal and thats to stop the empire. Ashe wants revenge much like vaan. Least thats what I'm getting out of it. It's just that they're not playing key roles and making the plans of how to go about carrying out the revenge. Ashe, Baltheir, Basch are pretty much taking care of that.

They may be overshadowed but I still find Vaan and penelo to be fun to play. Penelo is my best "whm" so far with how I built her and vaan is my speedy theif using ninja swords. I happen to like all the characters in this game so far. It's just different seeing a main character playing a smaller role.

He still shouldn't have been the main character.. that's my problem.. Vaan is not worthy of being main character with the role he has in this game.. ashe should be.. she's the dynast king's decendant, she's the one who saves the world pretty much.. she's the reason a lot of shit happens >.>

Except Vaan really isn't the main character, you don't have to use him when you get 4 people, you just start the game with him, each char is a main character in their own right. And SE wanted to make it so lead character was the character you controlled in towns, but due to some issues Vaan is just the lead character in towns, doesn't make him the main. He's just there for the ride, to relay everything that happens to the player.
And Ashe will always be the main character storywise, SE has acknowledged that.

he seems main character to me :\
