i know i should've known this already... but... HOW THE HELL DO YOU READ RENKAI CHARTS?! They just look like random jarble to me... :?

The Renkei chart that Tymon linked is the chart that I used to learn about Renkei. The Brady chart works, but you should know a little about Renkei before trying to read that jargon. Plus, Brady has been known to be wrong on a few occasions in the past.

The best part is, Aden updates his chart from time to time.

Just follow the arrows. Ignore the words for the time being. If you pick a weapon skill from any one group, you can follow any arrow FROM that group to another group to get a skillchain. It's actually quite simple. It gets frustrating simply because of the sheer number of possible skillchains out there.

The words? Well...they are the type of skillchain. As you get more advanced, you'll learn about which elements do damage against which types of mobs. Then, it is possible to set up a skillchain accordingly.

Then we have the mages. They can set up their magic bursts based on what kind of element is chained.

Once you find a party that has two different skillchains set up and a BLM who can burst off of both while not accruing excessive hate, you'll know what a good party can be like.

That chart gives me a headache... too much trying to look spiffy and not enough sense making.

I use This one instead. Might be worth a shot.

Heh, I actually have both of those charts printed out. The problem with the one that Perkypyro gave is it stops at the 200 weaponskills, so It's not as useful 65+. The other one I mainly use just for the 200+ weapon skills and the level 3 skill chains.

So that's how you read it. I was always used to seeing the boxes that showed <double thrust> <distortion> <Viper Bite>.

Made me wonder why VB was in the earth box...

Edit: Brady got ONE thing right in their guide, and that was the SC chart.

Can someone explain the SC mechanism to me? I've been following the chart mindlessly without knowing WHY the SCs work like that.

I'd like the answer to questions like:
- Why Flat Blade > Burning Blade is Liquefaction but Burning Blade > Flat Blade is Fusion?
- What is level 2 SC and level 3 SC? (don't give me answers like "Distortion is the SC that appears when you follow WS A after WS B, etc...)

Okay, I'm certainly no SC master (PLD here), but I'll see what I can do.

As you can see from looking at the SC charts, each WS is associated with a certain element. For the level 1 SCs, the element of the SC is the element of the second WS in the chain. So Tachi: Kagero (fire) >>> Avalance Axe (earth) is Scission (earth), but Avalanche Axe (earth) >>> Tachi: Kagero (fire) is Liquefaction (fire). It's a little trickier with your example, because Fusion is a level 2 SC, and they don't follow the same pattern.

As for the level 2 and 3 SCs, I'd suggest This Guide, as I don't know much about them at all.

Edit: (quotes from the guide)

"Level 2- Deals more damage than level 1, and allows two different elements to Magic Burst at once. Because they have two elements, they don't necessarily match up to the element of chained technique. A level 2 Renkei can only be followed by another Level 2 Renkei or a Level 3 Renkei. Both chaining Level 2s and performing Level 3s is done by using an ultimate technique (Skill 225+) of a weapon. These ultimate techniques will always produce a level two Renkei when chained properly. For early to intermediate players, it's not much to worry about right now. Instead, focus on a single Level 2 Renkei that will end your chain."

"Level 3- does more damage than Level 2 Renkeis and attacks with Four Elements at once. They can be done by performing the ultimate technique of a weapon type to chain two specific level 2 Renkeis together such that four compatible elements are together. I assume it is impossible to follow up on one of these."

Hmmm, so could you go One inch Punch---> Flaming arrow for a lvl 3 light SC? Because according to the chart, you can, but thats incredibly low lvl for lvl 3 sc >.>
