This is where I bought myself a great katana when I was in Japan a few weeks ago. Just noticed the website address on my custom declaration for a weapon.

www.katanaya-asakusa.com

They have some pretty cool shit and are super nice people - they don't speak English very well but they tried very hard to communicate with us.

I actually ended up buying all my souveniors from their little shop because they were so nice.

This shop is in an open air market at the Kannon Buddhist Temple. It is an amazing place in Asakusa district of Tokyo. We took a ton of pictures of this place so maybe I will post one when I get them from my friend(no pictures of me though - secret identity and all!).
Also, ate dinner at a little family owned restaurant in this market and they were so so nice. The dad spoke English very well and translated the names on our Katanas for us. My katana I bought was a replica of the one that Shouji Okita used in the 1850's. The restaurant owner was very excited I bought this katana because Okita is on of the most respected figures in Samurai history. I guess Soujiro from RuKenshin is a character based off of Shouji Okita and uses the same sword - it has a name that I can't remember but I will look it up and post it later today.

100,000¥. What's the conversion?

hmm I don't think I'd trust myself with that....

Knowing me I'd drop it and cut my leg off, or perform some sort of accident involving a lost limb...

Holy shitballs, thats cheap! Do they have a picture of the one you bought?

Kukichui Nurisome is the name of my Katana. Not sure if there is a picture of it I am kind of busy at work today but I will look for it some other time.

100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 yen methinks XD

I've been thinking of getting a bladed weapon of some kind. I'd pick up something Scottish though. :D Most likely a Claymore or other 2-handed sword. Problem is I need to work out if I want to actually wield it LOL.

Hearing that makes me want to visit or live in Japan for a period of time :nyam:

Hehe all of us who've lived in Japan for a long time laugh at the folks who get excited about samurai swords in tourist shops :P (But I can't help get excited about em myself. The authentic ones are badass)

It wasn't really a tourist shop for foreigners it was for Japanese. We were the only white folk around and plenty of Japanese were buying Katanas as well and asking us to see ours. The Samurai is held very dear in Japananese culture and this shop is one of the few respected sellers of authentic Katanas. The Kannon Temple is a very holy place for Japanese and millions of people visit every year.
There was nothing tourist about this open air market and the huge temple that rose above it.

Do they have a Reverse-Blade Katana?

It would go sweet with my Cosplay Kimono and Hakaba I got for Kenshin

Lol I know exactly where you're talking about. I was there just two months ago. I've also lived in Japan for about 22 years now so I know quite a bit about the culture -- likely more than you. :P Not trying to belittle you or anything. Yes, the shop you bought at most likely dealt with authentic style katanas. I have no doubt about that. But the temple you were at is actually widely visited by millions of foreigners every year, and I can almost bet that more foreigners buy swords from these shops than actual Japanese. ;P

Like I said though, the swords are really freakin cool. They're more of a novelty item out here in Japan than anything else, however. At least at this time. The samurai were/are highly respected, but it's not like it was in the past in the least.

Anyway, not trying to start shit or anything. Really happy you had a good time in Japan. I think everyone should visit at least once and even live here if you get the chance. It's a damned colorful culture. More than enough to keep anyone with any curiousity quite busy trying to figure things out. :) Beautiful country, beautiful people (goddamn beautiful women... lol)

Sorry, last samurai's on tv right now... only reason I thought to check back into this thread. lol.
