i saw the stint about the levee's in Europe being among the best in the world, perticulerly the dutch's levee system. we need some like those.
Northern Europe does not hardly get hit with hurricanes, especially not the severe hurricanes our gulf coast sees. It is not efficient to make levees that would withstand a cat 5 hurricane. We could make near on Earthquake proof buildings and freeway systems, but the cost is so outrageous that it is more efficient to build a system that can withstand a distant hit and just rebuild whatever is directly damaged. The extra money to make 'super' levees could be spent elsewhere to save many more lives and rebuild the city for the same amount of money.
Also, had you read my post on the first page (near the bottom) you would see levees are self defeating, especially for New Orleans which is sinking under its own weigt at 3 feet every 100 years. Next time this happens there will be nothing to rebuild, it will be the new lost city of Atlantis.
