Ok, im not a DRG above level 30 or BLU above level 20 but I want to know if DRG/BLU would be any good at all.

I was playing FFXI again and leveling up the characters I dont usually use. I got to leveling Kimhari and I thought about the combo. The problem is that neither of my jobs are high enough to really know if it would be worth anything.

Hmm...! This sounds like one of those odd job combinations that I'd be loving to try out. I'll have to see about working on BLU more (only Lv.8 ), and give it a try as both BLU/DRG and DRG/BLU someday to see how it works. After all.. knowing the typical and general population of most servers, they'd be looking at this in a very negative light due to closed minds and cookie-cutter ways. I'll have to look into equipment, BLU spells, and all that such, but I'm always up for a new challenge!

Yea, it just seems like a very interesting combo. Blue Magic and DRG skills.

Plus, your Wyvren casts breath skills based on the type of magic you cast. So what will it do when you cast Blue Magic?

When you look at new combos you have to think about what the Sub adds to the mainjob. Kimahri was a dual-job, not a main/sub. What does BLU add to DRG? More importantly, what does BLU add to DRG that WAR, THF, or any other applicable subs don't already.

Kimhari style. Sounds like him. Uses his "Lancet" skill to take other mobs. skills. Sounds relavent, just wonder if it's effective and effeciant. Have fun researching. I'll stick with DRK/WAR,NIN,THF

A very good point.

Some combos can benefiet with only a single skill. PLD and NIN both become the best tanks simply by subbing WAR for provoke.

If either of those jobs had their own voke, the combos would be completely different. (PLD/RDM and NIN/BLM Ftw!!!)

Same with this. Im trying to see if there is any single boost a DRG would get from BLU sub. Then if there is one, seek out another.

Im actually very curious about the Breath and Blue Magic thing.

Well, DRG/BLU seems to be the new DRG/WHM from what I've seen. It's an awesome solo combo, though WHM is still better in some situations I'd imagine, since you get status cures and such. BLU uses Cocoon to trigger healing breath, along with drastically increasing your defense, which is nice. You can still get Auto-Regen with BLU sub, and can get it at an earlier level than with WHM (DRG level 32, rather than 50), and stat bonuses from spells are nice too I'd imagine. WHM also probably gives more MP, though I doubt it's a very big difference, especially if you set some spells that give MP bonuses.

As far as PT use though... unless you're trying to heal PT members, it's kinda useless. Sure, you could stack on STR spells, but there aren't all that many even at 37, and you'd be missing out on things like Berserk, Warcry, Double Attack, SATA, Store TP, Meditate, Hasso, etc., depending on your sub.

EDIT: Wow, a lot of posts showed up while I was typing that. XD To answer your question: I think it depends on the type of spell you cast. The most common use though, is to trigger Healing Breath via Cocoon (since it costs so little MP, like Cure... except its recast timer is much longer, so less useful maybe).

Subbing BLU gives you the same breath abilities as subbing WHM, BLM or RDM. Healing Breath triggers at 1/3 HP (if you don't have a Drachen Armet equipped) and is triggered by ANY spell. The wyvern will remove status effects or use an elemental breath when the DRG uses a weapon skill.

*sigh*

If only a DRG/BLU could use 10,000 needles. Then your Wyvren transforms into a Cactuar and starts stabbing people.

But back to reality, it really does sound like a nice solo job. I didnt know that Cocoon would trigger healing breath, so that is a really sweet combo. Heal and DEF boost.

You still don't get a wyvern if DRG is your sub, only as a mian job, making it a rather weak choice as a sub-job, since half the strength of DRG is in the wyvern. Similarly, BLU subbed to a non-mage job would leave you with a pitiful amount of MP, and most of your offensive spells would get resisted. Still, it is kind of feasible if you play your cards right. I can't see BLU/DRG working though.

Most of the advance jobs do not work very well as support jobs. There are a few exceptions of course, but on the whole, the basic jobs usually offer better support.

As a 68drg/blu, I honestly see it as the best solo job that there is from what ive experienced. Cocoon = 50% defense boost. Great for taking hits u normally wouldnt with /whm or /rdm. Also the alternating 5mp costs for spells, foot kick and power attack. It makes mp efficiency so much easier, while poppin in an occasional 20-40 dmg from the spells themselves. Ive finished off a few birds with those spells lol.

Off topic (sort of)- Is Undead Killer on a WAR/PLD equipped with an Esquire's Mantle as potent as PLD's Undead Killer?

On-Topic - Low MP always sucks, but then its the same situation as DRG/WHM. Pitiful MP. However, BLU offers you the ability to combine spells for MP boosts, Clear Mind etc. etc.

The wyvern wont do a elemental breath because Blu subbed is considered a healing wyvern, not a hybrid. I havent needed the wyvern's status removing capabilties much seeing as the mobs that do those moves are just not as efficient as some other exp mobs.

Also, when u put on certain spells, it adds to your mp pool, like Queasyshroom adds 5 mp, as does blood drain, and digest, and sopoforic and such. The stat boosts from the spells themselves are a pretty nice plus as well.

i could pick this apart pretty easily... but i'll just touch on it a bit... work on your definition of tank a little bit, a tank has to keep hate, a few you mentioned wouldn't keep hate at all...

nin/drk is very circumstancial (sp? ><). it may be a good tank for wyrms but it's less than ideal and more than un-necessary for most fights.

nin/brd you left out, if your party isn't all spread out /brd is a good combo for some fights, no reliance on mp, sweet hate, only kept in check by song cast times and a general lack of useful stat boosts. still a good tank from what i've seen.

Question? War/thf... a tank? War has probably the most enm in the game, no doubts... but.... they take hits like most other melee, poorly... and /thf? for what, evasion bonus? isn't the mob facing you when you tank? bye bye SA

Pld/mnk? i can see a bit of hate milling from boost and a few other j/a's but overall i can't see this being much more useful than /war if it even gets that far... could be killer for spirit's within i think though... Garka pld/mnk 300% spirits....

Thf/nin would never keep hate as a tank off any serious DD.

And you totally forgot an awesome tank! Mnk/nin or even mnk/war.
Mnk/nin... just look, monk has the most haste in the game available to them if i remember right, right there your recasts are down a ton, they still deal decent damage /nin and they generate hate very well, Counterstance w/ a good counter gear set fills in the blanks very nicely on a melee mob, not much else can tank a mob with hundred fists on and have any reasonably chance of survival... issues are high damage tp attacks with many hits can eat someone with counterstance... then again, with a mob like an imp that has no damage tp attacks... besides, it's fun!

DRG/BLU is excellent for soloing. I can solo about 3k/hour as DRG/BLU, chaining EM and T mobs, usually getting chain 3 or 4. You don't get a ton of mp, but Sanction Refresh provides just enough mp regen that you almost never need to rest. Keeping Cocoon up all the time provides a big defense bonus, and the spells you use to trigger healing breath are only 5mp each. Other than that, you don't use the blu spells, the rest are there for stats only. Since DRG don't get alot of invites, I actually dinged both 73 and 74 in this manner.
