Just sortof wondering how everyone views selfishness...i.e. is it someone not going out of their way to help someone, or is it someone who only does stuff for themself...I, personally, see selfishness as when someone helps others only for a greater profit of themself...
And if I can throw in an instance, just to get an opinion...

If a party of people were in the Aquaducts getting themselves 2-4 subligar each, and refused to help an outsider get just one subligar, even though the person promised to stay the entire run, is that selfish? What if they refused, knowing they were getting that subligar and no one even needed it?

Discuss?~

The only time you're really 'giving' anything to a person by helping them is when it's not convenient for you. When you drop your xp flag to go help someone, that's being selfless and nice.

The rest is just that 'self-image' nice that makes you feel better about yourself in some shallow way when you're done.

Edit: Blackmage helped someone with Rank 3 yesteday and missed some xp. :P

I always volunteer to help out the LS or people that are shouting in Jeuno for help. And I also don't charge people. I've even left good parties because I've promised earlier to help people out. That is usually because the party lasted longer than planned, and I don't know any dragoon, or any melee for that matter that will turn down a good party. Most of the time I help though is when I am looking for party because there is a lot of that time for me.

And if what happened in your post actually happened, that party was full of douches and you should hunt them down and do bad things.

In the rather "hostile" environment of the game (parties screaming at each other for camps, people shouting for help in jeuno for hours with no reply, charging for "help", etc.) I believe that any sort of niceness is to be cherished regardless of where it comes from.

In a somewhat silly way, I believe that niceness spreads and each time any of us gets the chance to help somebody the game world in general becomes a little better :)

For example, when i was lower level I pretty much never had to pay for a teleport, since asking nicely was usually enough to get a free ride. So now, I never charge for a Warp II, even if i could really use the cash.

I don't think it's really required to "go out of your way" (leave a party, burn gil, die and lose xp, etc.) to be nice. It's more than enough to be willing to use up some time to help somebody if it is within your power.

And there's also the matter of "deserving" help. One thing is asking for help with a quest or a mission, another is screaming for PL or begging for cash.

if i tell people that i am gonna help them...i do it...and i usually show up on time.

If i see someone call for help or something, and i know i can help them...i usually will...depending on whether i feel evil or not (Dark knights are evil...so i often roleplay a bit as being evil).

but i am always willing to help my LS.....but lately...i have not been of much use, since half of them are in the 50+ level range...and i am still just a 44.

Ha, actually, that DID happen to me. -.-

Personally, I offer to help/do help people a lot, and not for image...or even any profit...but I get bored easily, so I guess the payment is being not-bored? Or somethin..

Selfishness to me is when someone only helps for their own gain/profit.

Like LS members charging to help other LS members camp NMs and get the drop. Or just plain counter-camping when you know the other person is camping for the item to use and not to sell...

I honestly dont think paying for a teleport or warp is unfair... I mean yeah its great that you do it for free, but I would much rather pay you! I mean 500-1000gil is nothing to me, but you get about 10-20 people giving you that gil, that is a decent source of money for mages. Take it, its no skin of most people's back. And if it is, shame on you!

Niceness is rather strange. I personally havent had the opportunity to help with much as I was always lower level than my LS. I am now getting to the stage where I can soon begin to help. What is weird though, is I rarely do things by themselves. I was helped by a couple 60+ people in Genkai 2, so now I feel it is only fair to help others out on it. I dont know if that is considered nice, or paying a debt I feel I owe.

you dont need a reason to help someone. its the right thing to do. what goes around comes around. help others and help will come to you when u need it.
