I recently became a lucky s.o.b. member, and aquired one of these.

I would like to use it for SMN since its so damn hard to level and I love smn.

I have recieved advice to just plow through on a DD since its so damn easy to level.

I would like some advice, and I already know how lucky I was, so no need to remind me.

The job I would like to, or just level another job to 75 that will make it easier.

Thank you for your input.

p.s. I AM ONE LUCKY ARSE TARU!

I ran into a similar problem with my anniversary ring, my paladin and my summoner. I wound up picking my summoner.

I used it during that mid-40 to early 50s stretch where there are no invites for summoner and solo camps suck a big fat one. Once you get to Aht Urghan it picks up a bit, or you campaign and the ring is useless.

DDs will always be easy to zerg with, people always need/use them. Summoners can't DD, can't really mainheal like a rdm, sch or whm and in my experience never justified a party slot a "real" job could occupy.

Have a kupo ring as well but I haven't used any charges yet :x

In my experience, they fill a similar role as BRD, usually either support + secondary heal, or dual healing with a job like brd. You see this from ~50 on (giving nin tank SS and eva/acc bonus is very nice for example). But yeah, if you want a fast track to 75, either a DD job, or if you are willing, BRD.

Um Yeah. SMN is a Support Job in an EXP PT. SMN can do DMG I don't really understand why Lyall said that. And no, i'm not saying its as fast/strong as having a SAM or something. But at 70 being able to cure, do spike dmg, and stoneskin is good. Or even at the 50 when double slap is strong, or tail slap ect.

I don't have a Kupo ring, but when it came down to the last two anniversary rings I leveled my SMN from 51-62 with it, and this second time around I used it to level subjobs that I didn't like. (WAR and NIN. Sorry, I'm not one for these two jobs lol.)

Roles for a summoner in exp seem to be one of the following: Sit on BP:Ward and buff with Stoneskin or Hastega then rest for MP/spot cure until BP:W comes up again, or join an already solid party and throw BP:Rage at whatever everyone else is fighting then rest for mp/spot cure.

Maybe I just had terrible luck in the bits I did party exp, but it always seemed like my spot was either outshined by a "real" mage or totally smoked by a "real" damage dealer. Parties after 55 are typically built for fastest/smoothest exp, and I never really felt summoner met either of those qualifications. It always seemed like I joined an already-moving party and quasi-leeched. I never felt my WS's worth of damage every 60 seconds warranted my being there, since any other melee should be hitting for the same numbers with the added benefit of actually building TP on a mob.

I didn't exp in parties at all once I got Eclipse Bite so I could be way wrong about upper-level parties, but it was sluggish and ugly before 50.

To clarify, I /did/ say I used it in the late 40s and early 50s, when a summoner doesn't really have a place as a healer or damage dealer just because of how poorly it compares to other jobs capable of doing the duty.

tl;dr: In my case, a party would either find a rdm-whm to heal or a war-drg-sam-whatever to apply damage between 40-55 and I always felt displaced.

My white mage can do damage, what with Banish III and Holy, doesn't mean I bill myself as a damage dealer. I did almost double the damage of two summoners, combined, while tanking on my NIN, pre-Jin and with a minimum of haste gear. The damage is mediocre at best but given how slow it comes it boils down to pathetic.

At least in a healing position you're able to fulfill your role adequately; other jobs can do it better but you fit the bill. In a DD role, you're a waste of a slot.

I'm pretty sure I said support role job AND not as strong as a real DD job.

Its about the being able to do multiple things. Cure, Enhance/Enfeeb(hastega,evasion/acc down/up,stoneskin,phalanx ect), and being able to do a decent dmg Blood Pact Rage. And no, i'm not saying SMN is good in a merit PT i'm saying it does have a slot when doing a casual exp pt from 40-70+.

I don't know why when I said Support job you reply with comparing it with a healing postion and DD role but yeah. Support as in enhancing or healing+DD.

I pointed out that ANY support job can "do damage," but that it shouldn't mean that's a reason to invite them. You can throw out low damage BP's once a minute(down to 45 seconds), congrats; but that's still time that could be better spent curing, resting up, or just standing there not wasting your mp.

I didn't say anything about merit parties either. In fact, my only example was in a level 59-62 party(I was the 59 NIN); and both summoner's damage was horrendous. I'd much rather a SMN save their MP for something useful than pretending to be a DD in any form of experience party. Merit parties only further emphasize the point.

wHere did you find your mog tablet btw?

A handful of these posts belong on summoner discussion more than here, but oh well, that's life.

I never got into a good rhythm on my summoner as a support role. Without any real BP- gear I'd find myself doing stoneskin/hastega rotations, only getting up from resting when my timer was ready. Just didn't feel like I had the fuel to do more than one thing a minute. At least a bard or a cor can put up more meaningful buffs, even if Phantom Roll has a cooldown of 1-minute you don't need to worry about the buff only lasting 90seconds because of gear/skill limitations.

Well it seems that smn is obviously still not seen as good at anything, until endgame.

I still <3 smn so I think I'll use my damn ring on that job. I can't wait to hit 75 go go smn!.

You can close this thread now, b4 more people post about smn, and not answer my damn question.

Thanks to those who helped, and none to the people that didn't lol ciao!
