Basically, this guy was fired in 2008 for basically whistle blowing against corruption in the police. He's essentially gone off the deep end now and has made it his goal to kill cops and their family. He's already killed 3 innocent people.

I'm conflicted about this... on one part, I do commend him standing up against the police and whistle blowing things about them before he went this way, but he has killed people and that's just wrong. This is... a disturbing scenario. Especially since cops are so scared now that they are shooting first. Cops in LA have already shot at cars that RESEMBLE Christopher Dorner's car. Two of which had elderly Asian ladies in them. Apparently no one has been harmed by them yet, but this is disgusting the cops are shooting first. And disgusting this guy is willing to kill innocents to bring to light the corruption and problems in the police force. This whole situation is... bah..

I'm conflicted about this...

I would hope that is just a poor choice of words on your part.

to me, this man's actions, plus his mad narcissistic ramblings call into question all of his original allegations(which were already found to have been proven false)

His supposed "justification" is no more valid or laudable then Ted Kaczynski's

He's acting like a child that didn't get his way. Even if he was in the right, he immediately voided any good he may have done, and even disproved himself, the moment he decided to take actions into his own hands in the manner he chose. There is something really wrong in our country, and has been for a while. The masses keep blaming movies, books, pron, video games, guns, etc., but really, it's that we have a complete lack of respect for anyone but ourselves, and possibly our friends and family. Gotta get this shit under control, and fast.

I'm conflicted because I really hate what the man has done and I HATE giving any media time to any murderer. But there should be media coverage about corruption in our society, especially in the police force. And abuse of power and such. So that's what I'm conflicted about. I like there being more media talking about any corruption in the police force, but I hate that it's only a part of the coverage about him :\

does that make sense? I suck at explaining things

And that's a part of the negatives of a "individual first" society as we've had for a long time. We've been a society of "me" instead of "we" and it has allowed for great growth, but has also allowed for great greed and corruption.

well, the manifesto of a guy on a killing spree isn't the best thing to use as proof or evidence of police corruption.

and actually the corruption and abuses of power in our "society of me" PALE in comparison to what has taken place in many places with what you'd call a "society of we"

Some of the greatest evils ever committed were done by a "society of WE" in the name of the "collective" and its our INDIVIDUAL rights that are our greatest and really ONLY recourse to abuses of power. there are millions of nameless victims who never got that chance precisely because they live in a society that DOESN'T recognize the rights of the individual. Not sure how that isn't obvious

and all that aside I'm getting sick of the generalizations of the police, My heart and prayers go out to the LAPD. Probably one of the worst city's in this country to be a cop in, aside from maybe Chicago or Detroit. Police put their lives on the line to do amazing work in this country everyday and rarely get thanks, yet when one of them abuses their power they all get lumped in together.

A thankless job on a policeman's salary, if you ask ME there's not enough media coverage of the acts of HEROISM by police that takes place everyday, And a bit TO MUCH Coverage every time a cop uses force in a way that's the least bit questionable.

Hell all a cop has to do is use his tazer in a situation that's not perfect for it to end up on the nightly news. We've had national debates over whether or not some screaming dickhead deserved the tazing he got as hes fighting and flailing at cops "DON'T TAZE ME BRO" Yet when police are murdered by criminals many of the same people suddenly couldn't give a shit.

sorry Elle, I think we view things threw different prisms

you lament the "negatives" of a free society and then lament abuses of power by authorities in the same post.

I just don't get it.

You think there isn't abuse of power or problems in the LAPD? After they shot at people who just have a similar car to the suspect? Clearly we're not getting the best people for the police :\ and I agree many police are good and do deserve media coverage of the positives.

And I think it's a bit unfair to compare all the evils of a "society of we" to those of a "society of me" since a "Society of me" has actually been around WAY less than a "society of we." And I don't think either is purely good or bad, but I think there's still a better option than both :|

I didn't say there WASN'T corruption problems, just that the corruption of a few doesn't mean people should lump all cops in together and the corruption of a few doesn't invalidate the great work that I'm sure many great LAPD officers do everyday.
and our media DOES cover abuses of power by police, if a policeman does something stupid in a populated area now there's a good chance its gonna end up on youtube, and deff gonna endup on the dashcam, if its obvious in a video that there's been abuse it often ends up on the news.

Yet the daily occurrences of police doing heroic things, saving lives, taking personal interest in someones life to try and help them. the ones that actually Protect and Serve get FAR LESS media coverage. =(

And I was mainly saying, It's pretty silly to gripe about our Individual rights based society. seeing as its our individual rights that are our ONLY protection against abuses of power, citizens of country's without individual rights typically have NO recourse for that sort of thing.

I'm not saying we have some perfect society with no corruption, but its good enough that maybe some people should do a little less complaining, and a little more thinking about how lucky they are to have been born in a 1st world country where they have access to such a high standard of life and so many rights and opportunity's

I just get frustrated because so many people seem to have no realization of how lucky they are. If you were born in a 1st world society in the latter part of the 20th century, you won the fucking cosmic jackpot. compared to what our grandparents and their parents and their parents and so on. compared to what they went threw, what they had to sacrifice, and the way they had to work to build what we have now. all the advances in both technology and politics/democracy in the last century. No group of people has ever had it better in the history of earth. so slowdown and smell the roses damnit.

I wasn't trying to suggest lumping all the police together with those who are corrupt, but there are a great many of the good cops willing to not believe that some of their colleagues are corrupt or bad and that's because they live inside that bubble. This happens a lot in society though. Many going around protecting those who are corrupt or problematic for society because they're friends with them and can't get outta their biased view to see it. That's what I've seen happen with the police, politicians, and many others before.

And I would really love if the news covered heroic things police, firemen, doctors, and many others do in society. It'd be great to have more positive news coverage, but people don't like the positive for some reason :( and corporate media is always going to be about profits over objective news coverage.

And I'm not so blind to see how fortunate I am in this country and this age, but I always think things can be better and would strive towards better than being content that things are better than they were. It's important to recognize things are better than the past and the overall shift of the world has been towards a MUCH brighter future (more free, more economic prosperity, better health, etc), but it's also important to recognize where we need to improve things and weed out corruption and problems in our society.

Double posting for new info

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/10/us/los-angeles-police-to-reopen-dorner-case.html?_r=0

This kinda thing is what I'm conflicted with. Still hate what actions Dorner has taken, but it's good to have it reopened considering it could have been wrongful dismissal. I mean, up until 1968 riots Black and White cops weren't allowed to be partners, in 1990 the first black president of the LAPD commission was hired and not even that far back then there was a lot of racial attacks on him and there were times (apparently) they tried to get him killed by pulling his back up. 1990 isn't that long ago, so it's possible that there are still some racist assholes on the force so it seems worthy to reopen the case as there is a history of racism in the LAPD.

However, it does seem that this could be a means the LAPD are trying to use to get him to turn himself in.

So ya, again, still conflicted when it comes to this aspect. Still doesn't condone Diorner at all for his horrible deeds though.

Edit: He's reported as dead
