I've been using my laptop for FFXI for several months now and it's working fine. Sony Vaio PCG-K25 (?) but I might have the model number a bit off. It's not one of their current in-production machines, so the details aren't on sonystyle.com atm. It lags in rendering characters a bit in high-traffic areas and I have the detail and resolution turned all the way down, but I was on a PS2 before, so it's similar in image quality. I've been using the built-in wireless with my Airport Extreme and that hasn't been an issue, either.
It's never been underpowered for XP parties and it's worked through many garrisons, so it's been enough for my needs. I built my desktop with a Dragon Orb cooler, so I try to use it as little as possible at this point, lest I go through a lot of Tylenol from the sound of the fan.
The Vaio screens have always been the nicest thing about them. They cost a bit more, but it's really worth it in the end. Just don't expect to walk too far from a power outlet for too long.
