I was able to load FFXI onto my roommate's laptop until my computer is fixed. There's just one problem.... no number keypad >.< I am trying to see if I can find an adapter so I can connect my keyboard up to it's usb port, but in the mean time, how do laptop users move around, and how the hell do you bring up the main menu (right side of screen), lol.

W A S D for movement. (Function)+(I forget what button, but - is circled on it)

You can go into Config > Keyboard Movement thingy and set you're own keys.

in the main menu there's an option for compact keyboard or whatever, I have a second function on my keyboard so I sort of still had a numpad(just an anoying to use one) I could use to set it to this, I can't remember if there's another way to get menu open.

once in the compact keyboard set up use wsad for movement and a few other keys get moved around but you'll get used to it.

If you can borrow a wired xbox controller, those are easy as hell to setup too. >.>

Thats what I forgot to mention. The compact keyboard function. Yeah listen to Jakey here.

I guess I'm lucky that my laptop has a full keyboard, lol.

My laptop has a full keyboard too XD but to bring up the main menu, there should be a Fn keyboard "hidden" in the right half of your keyboard that will be awkward as hell to use but it SHOULD work. There should be a - in those keys, hold Fn and press it, it'll bring up the menu. Use the arrow keys to go to Config, then Misc. 2, and choose Compact keyboard.

By default, compact uses WASD for movement and IJKL for camera, which I find great since that means my hands are already lined up for typing at any time. I just use ctrl or alt commands to shortcut menus (alt + M for magic, J for job abilities, I for inventory, E for equipment, W for weapon skills, B for pet commands, A to engage, L for LS chat, P for party chat, R for replying to a tell...) - you should be ready to use ctrl and alt quickly anyway for macros so it just becomes an extension of that.

I vastly prefer the compact style to the full keyboard style. WASD is completely ingrained from every other PC game, so it just makes a lot more sense to move with those. I used a laptop when I first started, and then when I got a PC, I kept the compact layout because it's better.

I highly recommend picking up a numeric keypad. I tried the WASD and trying to manipulate the keyboard to what I wanted but it never felt right.

Thanks for all the replies. I picked up a USB adapter, so now I can hook up my normal key board to the laptop.

You have to be careful with that many numpads don't support multi-press

NEVER buy a num pad from Targus btw all of theirs are utter shit.

for the record its - to open the menu on the keyboard lol

I have to second this. I had the same issue as the OP, and got a Targus NumPad, which I owned exactly 6 minutes before using it as target practice. I then went USB (wireless) keyboard, and it's been great.
