Last Remnant

I played the game yesterday for a few hours, and you have almost complete control over your unions, as well as the option to make anyone the squad leader. You can also chose more specific the actions your squads perform by turning abilities off in the menu.

The game is still plagued by extreme loading times, sometimes up to almost 10 seconds between battles, and it took almost 5 min for the game itself to start after pressing "New Game". I actually thought there was something wrong with the game at first since it just showed a black screen for what felt like 5 min.

Except for the loading times, it seems to be a good game with a lot less randomness.

Edit: well, ok, wouldn't say 10 seconds. It's closer to almost 5 seconds, depending on boss fight or normal fight. A bit longer on boss fights.

One thing I love about the battles in the PC demo was that while you were making your decisions about what to do, your guys and the monsters were doing a little bit of fighting, not just standing still. It's meaningless in terms of the progress of the fight, but it's such a nice touch that they're not just standing there in the middle of combat doing nothing.

Didn't have any real complaints about the loading times.

Loading times are fine on my machine. The thing that bugged me so far was during one battle, one of my units was really low on health and the next turn, I wasn't given an option to heal them. Every other battle the option almost always pops up when I have no use for it, but the one time I really wanted to I couldn't.

Oh also the main character is a douchebag. "This is ace!" "Let's kick some a!" etc.

Aye, I'm grateful for the Japanese voice track on this. The American VA's and what they say/how they say things are nothin' more than a laughin' riot to take away from the experience, imo. I would have dealt with the tech. issues on the 360 if I could stand the talk, but it wasn't in the cards.

As for loading times, I never had an issues, everything was quick. Didn't notice anything to make the loadin' times stand out for me, in a bad way. I do know for a fact it loads a helluva lot faster and less often than the 360 version, a helluva lot less.

All in all the PC version is up to par from what I expected from the 360 version, which wasn't even close. Had they released this version of the game and had it been this technically sound, on the 360, there is no doubt in my mind that it would have been a huge hit.

Installing The Last Remnant on my PC. One thing to note, this game REQUIRES Steam, so if you have an account, then you'll have no problem, if you don't, you need to set up an account.

it doesn't require steam... I don't have a steam account and play it just fine.

Ok, encountered a problem with the PC version. The synching between the facial animations and voices are way off, and the scenes seem to lag in cutscenes. On my PC, it's so bad it pretty much refuses to work. I'm having to use a university gaming PC to play this at the moment. It's something that SE should probably patch.

Should note that I got as far as half way through the opening battle before it died again, and this is on a state of the art university gaming PC which can real several games in high quality without frame dips. It couldn't even handle TLR on normal.

Edit: Ok updated drivers on my PC in windowed mode rather than full screen this time, it works well to a point. In fact TLR on my PC runs pretty much exactly the same as the 360 version. I need to upgrade my PC. I have yet to test it windowed at university.

Exactly why does yours require steam? Does it refuse to run without it?

I mean, as I said, I don't have Steam, and I run it just fine. Seems strange that SE would make a game that can't be run without subscribing to a third party. And as I said, I run it just fine.

SE and Steam made a deal shortly before release, I assume it's for copy protection.

I was under the impression it could be set up to work with steam, but didn't have to be. Like Fallout 3.

It says in the manual and on the box though that it requires steam for activation.

My goog-fu tells me you're right. Steam seems to be handling all the auth codes (cd-keys) for it. Which is just freaking bizarre, cause you'd think running an mmo would kinda prepare you for a game that isn't going to sell well.
But hey, I really like Steam so I'm not going to complain.

I pirated my game and it's working just fine. I've never even had steam installed on this computer. So much for copy protection.

The only way it's going to "require" steam is if you purchased it through steam. If you just bought it in a store, you don't need steam at all.

I have the game on DVD, I didn't purchase it online, and yet it did require a steam activation.
