"Is there something out there you look for?" Manfried sat down next to Kikona, struck by curiousity.
"Something that I look for?" Kikona's eyes shifted to meet with Manfried's with the same bout of curiousity.
"Every day and night, whenever you are free, you sit at these steps and look out to where the boat comes," he pointed out to the faint green waters.
"I do..." she looked away, brushing back the stray strands of darkened brown hair from her face behind her ear, "Just a pleasant view is all. Whenever Melyon doesn't have a need for me to run to the marshlands or Jeuno, I just like to sit here during my free time, really."
Manfried shook his head in disbelief. During his previous days in Selbina, he had wandered from his post to watch her. The look she had when staring into the distance was thoughtful and captivating. Mere peace was not the reasoning why she watched hopefully every moment given for the arrival of the boat.
Among the few of Selbina, Kikona had grown in popularity for how mysterious she acted. There was never once she turned down any way to help, never once did she pose or appear unfriendly, but it was the lack of knowing what brought her there and, other than the assumption of Bastok, where she came from. It was unfortunate not even she could provide these answers, thus making Kikona a mystery to herself. She had made it a point not to dwell on the past however, and to find a purpose now. Since her arrival, Melyon had taken her in. A deal was struck right off that she could house with him for the exchange of the labor he was unable to carry out in his old age. Whenever Kikona did not travel for him or do the needed work, she simply sat on the steps outside the Weavers' Guild sales building that led up to the crystal. It was this that drew Manfried to her in questioning. No one else was willing to inquire.
Kikona's tranquil nature was worth suspician. Residing outside of Valkurm Dunes, every passing day included outrages and fights that disrupted tiny Selbina's peace. Yet, it was never a hinderance to her day. From drunken shouting to newcoming adventurers' cluelessness and need of help, it was seen moreover delightful and intriguing. The individuality of each person was interesting, and worth her time if they needed guiding or aid. But sitting on those steps one late evening, the boat from Mhaura docked. The passengers stepped off, most walking, a few in a hurry. In the middle of the clutter, one Hume had stood out. When he walked past her, he had seen already that her eyes trailed him. So he stopped, politely taking his white feathered, black topped, red hat from his head and asked, "May I help you?" Afterwards, Kikona could not recall what occurred. They talked lightly, and introduced themselves. To her dismay, he was pressed to move on as he was not alone.
That is why she sat there time after time. Another day would come that he disembarked the boat, then walked up to her. His name was an echo in the back of her mind whenever thoughts drifted.
"Kikona?"
"Yes?"
"Why don't you leave?"
"Where would I go, Manfried?" She faced him with sincerity in the question. Home became Selbina.
"The people here can handle themselves well. There's somewhere else in Vana'diel that awaits you, I think."
"What made you think that?"
"Couldn't say. You look out to the sea all the time. You observe the prestigous adventurers and their fine weapons all the time. Don't you want that? No one would be angry if you left us. Just come by to visit."
Embarrassed by the urging, wondering if she had been right to try and settle peacefully in Selbina, Kikona responded, "I don't know where to go. When I woke up in Bastok, everywhere was so noisy and busy. People disregarded me when I asked for help. I like it here... I'm content as I am. Those other people that wear their heavy armor and impressive cloths can carry their life on. It's not for me."
The evening wore on into the dead of night with the twinkling stars dotting the sky. It was a beautiful night. No cloud covered the full moon's shine that lit the waters into shimmers. Kikona and Manfried sat in silence together to enjoy it.
Splashing water to her face, feeling refreshed afterwards, Kikona then immediately stood at the calling of her name. Melyon sounded for her. Kneeling down right quick to pick her gloves up, she took off running back to her friend and caretaker. The cool morning air chilled her wet face and she brushed a dry glove against her cheeks and forehead, trying to soak it up. Sliding the gloves back onto her hands once reaching Melyon, she smiled and nodded in greetings, "Good morning! What are you in need of?"
The drooping face of the old man lifted with his sharp, upward, curved smile. "Needin' ye t' take this impawtant lettaw wi ye, lassie, to Lower Jeuno stable." Melyon digged into his front pocket, finally taking out a rolled up piece of paper with a ribbon tied tightly around it. A small marking on the paper read 'Lower Jeuno Chocobo Stable'. Kikona again nodded in acknowledgement. It was more than likely in regards to cabbages, she figured. Melyon communicated often with each person per chocobo stable from around Vana'diel. Messages to Jeuno mostly meant a discussion over sheep and chocobo feeding
"I'll get right on it, Melyon. Take care, okay?" And a dashing sprint sent her quickly up the steps to the exit of Selbina. Her legs carried her far and in a short time. On such lengthy runs she preferred to take the chocobo which could be picked up from the crags. Preference usually sent her through Pashhow Marshlands, since Melyon normally needed items from there, but La Theine Plateau was more convient. This time through, she took convience. A chocobo was picked up along the way and the faster transportation took her through the forest of Jugner. The speed of the animal through the sagging branches and thick forestry made Kikona happy. Jugner overwhelmed her with an abnormal feeling of uneasiness if her mind was not focused on the delivery of the message.
The chocobo was placed under the care of the Upper Jeuno stable, and Kikona briskly walked to Lower to hand over the letter. In comparison to the one time she had been in Bastok, Jeuno was far worse. It bustled loudly with travelers and one could typically find another bickering aloud or doing their best to sell an item or acquire help with a reward. Also, many Tarutaru dwelled in the city. For someone not use to looking down to avoid tripping over the tiny people, even walking became difficult for Kikona. Back in Selbina only one of those kind made himself situated, and he usually sat near the dock with a fine set of fishing gear and bait always on sell.
Politely excusing herself pass and around people, head tilted down in search of the shorter, long eared ones, Kikona failed to notice a very visible Hume standing in her way. His white armor provided him a look of honor and valor, neither which prevented her from colliding into him in her rush to reach the other end of Lower Jeuno. Taken aback by the common crudeness of inhabitants of Jeuno, this blonde haired man was surprised as well as she by the collision and quickly took a hold of Kikona to steady her balance. Then, quite contrary to her firm belief of their disrespect and easily angered tempers, this one apologized first. "I'm sorry. Are you alright?" It was so simple yet astounding.
"Y-Yes, I'm fine. Didn't mean to run into you, really. I'm very sorry." His hands released her arms, then his eyes wandered down her figure in observation. Not in a disrespectful manner, but the man's eyes lit up when they rose to meet hers again.
"You wouldn't happen to be a treasure hunter? I was about to be on my way in search of a specific and important piece of equipment, but.."
A treasure hunter? Kikona stared, befuddled by this assumption. At her right hip, strapped to it, was a fine and sharpened dagger. Her clothing was light weight, even in appearance, and to her left hip, three different pouches dangled from the belt of her knee lengthed pants. That could have been the reasoning behind his assumption she failed to notice. All she had known was Melyon could use her, and she could help. No such thing as this treasure hunter title had been brought up. "I.. don't think I'm a treasure hunter." Kikona's head tilted downward, looking helpless and feeling beyond clueless before the man. Her cheeks were gradually reddening with every second.
He could not help but notice how crestfallen she appeared suddenly, even the dropping tone of her voice from the previous minute when they met. "Hey, hey, hey... It's fine. You sure do look like one though," he shifted his weight, looking thoughtfully at her, "Which means I could definately use your help.. Miss...?"
His words quickly brought relief. Kikona had nearly reached the point where she was about to choke down her sobs to not shame herself crying in front of another person. Just as the next person, she wanted to know who she was, did, and where from... but that was the past, whatever it had been. The future, is the way to look, and this is.. my chance.
Looking up at him, she beamed, "Kikona. That's the name, Mister...?"
A graceful bow and polite smile led up to him introducing himself as, "The name is Cythe Adelmo, Kikona. Pleasure to meet you. So that we can talk a bit more peacefully, do you want to walk somewhere else?"
Clutching the rolled up letter in her hand, Kikona remembered she had to deliver it soon as possible. Stopping to converse was almost rude while Melyon had her on a trip. "Oh, I really need to give this to the owner of the chocobo stable up ahead! I almost forgot.. Is that okay?" Asking his permission to deliver the message almost made Cythe laugh. He grabbed Kikona by the wrist, and with himself in front, began taking her through the crowded avenue in a hurry.
