Leaping Boots & Emp. Pin

So let me get this straight,

You have boots that raise accuracy?
You have boots that raise damage?
You have boots that make you a better puller?

Yes these boots boosts accuracy and damage but (not having a go at you Vang) but how exactly do they make you a better puller? It doesnt matter how much more dex or agil you have, they dont stop links or agroing while pulling. They increase range you can fire from? If not then they dont exactly make people a better puller, pulling depends on the persons natural skill, not equipment.

Btw like your donkey kong comment at the end

Vang, keep your flames for the flameboard. Here is my current equipment list:

Marauder's Knife
Calveley's Dagger/Strike Shield
Fang Necklace
Emperor's Hairpin
Custom Hume M Gloves/Battle Gloves
Long Boomerang/Power Crossbow
Drone Earrings x2
Deft Rings x 2
Garrison Hose x Noct Gaiters
Mercenary Captain's Belt
Nomad's Mantle

**I forget the name of my new checkered armor I just got level to equip. Yes, I'm too lazy to look it up atm.**

I am currently farming for +1 Noct Gaiters and Boots, and something else... although I have a short shopping list. I'm thinking a new crossbow and a +1 Nomad's Mantle. Not entirely sure though. My new Bone Knife+1 was cheap as hell and I can't wait to use it, but I need new gear first before I level.

As soon as I have thirty seals again I plan to hunt down Bitoso and get myself a genin earring this time.

I try to be a good Thief that has great gear, who pulls very well, and is quick to setup a powerful ws. I also try to remain fulyl awre of the abilities of the rest of my party.

Also, later in the game I plan to be using these boots:

http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?fitem=4860

However, I don't THINK in my OPINION a Thief needs these boots to be any good or even to be exceptional. I also think they are 10x more expensive then they deserve to be, and are overcamped. I ahve always hated the mass BS that surrounds these boots, and has been the one item I will never buy!

I am considering camping them at 50, and if people like you keep flaming me for not having them I probably will.

If you want to flame me take it to the flameboards, but I'm allowed my opinion. Frankly, I think you're being terribly elitist in this thread. people don't need such inane expectations placed on them. Rather then tell them to get the leaping boots, why not tell them about good equipment they might not know to get.

Everyone can mention these boots/haripin items, but no one mentions other good gear people forget about.

You're really quick to flame people for compeltely innocent comments.

Four to five hours a day huh?

I currently only play 3-4 on weekdays when I work third shift. MY GOD I MUST PLAY MORE!!

Also, I visit relatives or go out every other weekend. I NEED TO PLAY MORE!

I won't tell you to play less, so don't tell me to play more.

Pretty much they are not very necessary early on but if you can get them, do. I didnt get my emperor's hairpin until 40, and I camped empy and got my leaping boots at around 16-17, camped lizzy as well. You really need Emperors pin for nin (sub) when it hits 24 more than anything. Usually as a thf you wont get hit alot if you know how to do your job (post 30 espescially) so the evasion bonus doesn't play a whole lot into that decision, its the AGI and DEX. Also as Euph says that little bit of Dex and Agi isn't very noticeable or important but it adds up with the rest of you gear so the dex +15 and agi +15 etc. do make a noticeable difference.

I bought my hairpin for the agi and dex of course, but the evasion is a very good byproduct for thf/. I can evade a noticable amount of hits from inc tough mobs while pulling(talking about faster mobs like tigers, torama, raptors which can catch up). Lets not forgot we are the evasion kings of the game hands down.

Also as Euph says that little bit of Dex and Agi isn't very noticeable or important but it adds up with the rest of you gear so the dex +15 and agi +15 etc. do make a noticeable difference.

Exactly. Update to 3 more agi, 1 more dex here, 2 dex there in HQ rings, another dex in HQ lightning bow, etc etc. Suddenly you have slightly better acc, a little bit more punch to SATA, everything adds up.

Also, later in the game I plan to be using these boots:

If you're not willing to spend 500-600k for LL boots, are you really willing to spend about 1-1.5 million instead? These boots are always rising in price last I remember. And if you have the gil to buy LL but choose not to, why not just buy them, use them for about 15 levels, sell them off and buy the RSE 2 boots along with saved gil to cover the gap?

I do agree those RSE 2 boots look damn nice, but I've personally choose to go for a SH first. Leaping boots are definitely great boots though, not just for thief either. Good for ninja tank until late 30s since you gain 6 good stats for the cost of about 3-4 defense. They're awsome boots for any melee DD job until AF levels since defense doesn't matter at all, sometimes even longer than that. And I happen to think leaping boots look damn good :D

So Leaping boots are definitely not garbage. If you wanna talk about things a thief doesn't need, lets talk about my rabbit charm I bought for 600k. Although I really didn't mind spending that, it's pretty cool and I noticed a transition in steal rate from +5 to +6 for some reason. 2/3--->4 gold coins per hour during a coffer hunt. Once I was around 6 which was pretty good for my level.

I didn't have these two items until around 46 or 48, but I did notice a rather large boost to SATA damage, acc, eva, basically I just became a better Thief. The two are so good because there isnt anything close to as good that can be purchased from an AH. +3 dex/agi on boots? Second best is probably noct+1. +3 dex/agi +10 eva on head? Nothing comes even remotely close.

Could I live without them? Yes. Would I still get invites with noct+1 gear? Yes. Would I be as effective? Not at all.

Best of luck on aqquiring these items fellow Thief.

These boots don't noticable raise accuracy or damage, they don't make you a better puller, they don't make sata setup faster, and they look ugly as hell. To say a Thief needs these is absurd.

Don't even try to call me lazy either. My gear is far above what it needs to be, and on top of that I've leveled multiple subjobs.

If you dont have them, then you really dont have a reference point from which to make an informed opinion.

I listed my equipment above. Notice the Hairpin? It doesn't make a HUGE difference. Then again, we really seem to have a level of stat saturation build up with every tier of sata damage.

Bottom line

Is there any piece of equipment better for those slots in terms of pumping SATA? Until hume RSE 2 boots in the early 60s which I checked are 1.8-2 million, the answer is no. No boots give as much agi/dex for a long long time, therefore nothing is better, making LL boots the justified boot of an above average thief. Of course, these boots don't change one's skill: Timing SATA, SATAing fast(SATA partner taking 1-2 hits tops), always hitting SC, positioning, and very deep understanding of enemy hate. But LL take a good thief farther, can't debate that. And they look sexy!

Don't tell me your one of these all out Noct NQ gear wearing THFs with the retarded looking feather cap and boots lol....

I'm saving!!

I'm sorry for being a scrub . . . but every once in a while Palum lends me his and I feel 1337 for a little while . . . 30 more stacks of silk thread . . .

You know... I remember back when the boots were 240k... when you only had about four people camping them at once.

I remember a lv.7 Thief a higher end WHM kept alive while they killed lizzy. THAT is a nice memory. Wish i remembered the WHM name...

What's bottom of the line acceptable gear nowadays?

I think the bottom line is that if it's not the typical "stat whore / uber" gear, then it should at least be current gear.

Vang, I bought a noct hat just because it had the feather in it. I dont use it unless I'm bored and put it on cuz i think it is cute.

My feeling on this is that if you can't land SATA within a few seconds of the battle start, it doesn't matter if you're wearing the best equip or not, you'll still suck. If you can land it within those seconds, even if you don't have few extra DEX and 6 AGI, you're a better THF than that gilbuyer who has uber gear but takes 15 seconds longer to land SATA.

But at the same time, if you're fast on the SATA -and- have the uber gear, you're the best kind of THF. But you're not broke without it.

Some of the time it isn't the thief's fault for slow SATA it is the tank that likes to dance. Dancing tanks were mostly noticable in the dunes.. as expected, but occasionally you get the ones in the 40's who still can't keep still.

I confess, I have my emp pin AND the noct hat. It's cheap and looks pimp, so sue me.

Also, the dancing tank comment was correct. I <3 people who setup fast.

...now people who put their back to the wall and the mob's back to the wall... is another story.

I just talked with a Thief who has two sets of armour

When he's SATA, he'll have a macro to put on +Dex gear.
When he's waiting for SATA to recharge, he'll put on Accuracy gear to raise TP....

I haven't ever partied with any thief that prepared..lol

Most of the good THFs I know use that same strategy.
I wish I had enough inventory space to have different armour sets on my RNG or NIN....
Stupid Ammo and Tools.

This becomes preferred and basiclly required to be good somewhere in the 50s about.

Consistants: darksteel kukri+1, bone knife+1 or strike shield depending on sub, lightning bow, ammo, Emperor hairpin, spike necklance, flora coterate(sp), hume RSE gloves(str+3,dex+3,agi-1,vit-1), Leaping boots.

SATA: Drone earrings, dex+3 rings, RK+1 belt, AF pants
Attk/tp: Spike earrings, sniper rings, life belt.

Steal: All AF and rabbit charm

Evasion: pin, nomad mantle, dodge earrings, and some shield with +3 evasion. I could use some work here in this area since evasion is our true speciality, mainly for outside xp parties of course.

I'm torn between updating hume RSE 2 boots and scorpion harness. I really haven't needed that extra +10 acc though, but it sure won't hurt. Either way I'm going to try and farm over spring break a bit and save toward some type of major upgrade. There are many things I could upgrade but they look the most interesting.
