Campaigners on the Greek island of Lesbos are to go to court in an attempt to stop a gay rights organisation from using the term "lesbian".

The islanders say that if they are successful they may then start to fight the word lesbian internationally.

The issue boils down to who has the right to call themselves Lesbians.

Is it gay women, or the 100,000 people living on Greece's third biggest island - plus another 250,000 expatriates who originate from Lesbos?

The man spearheading the case, publisher Dimitris Lambrou, claims that international dominance of the word in its sexual context violates the human rights of the islanders, and disgraces them around the world.

He says it causes daily problems to the social life of Lesbos's inhabitants.

Injunction sought

In court papers, the plaintiffs allege that the Greek government is so embarrassed by the term Lesbian that it has been forced to rename the island after its capital, Mytilini.

An early court date has now been set for judges to decide whether to grant an injunction against the Homosexual and Lesbian Community of Greece and to order it to change its name.

A spokeswoman for the group has described the case as a groundless violation of freedom of expression, and has pledged to fight it.

The term lesbian originated from the poet Sappho, who was a native of Lesbos.

Sappho expressed her love of other women in poetry written during the 7th Century BC.

But according to Mr Lambrou, new historical research has discovered that Sappho had a family, and committed suicide for the love of a man.

I was reading this on Yahoo News yesterday and thought it was pretty hilarious just since it seems pretty absurd that they are NOW offended by it to the point that they would seek a court injunction.

relevant as in "uh-huh so what was the point of that?"....(in reference to the situation not you tok, that was a little funny)

I'm kinda at a loss for words really...so many things to say not really one good statement to grasp onto, just...lol I guess until I can say something more intelligent.

I read this in the paper today in the middle of my mechanics front office and lol'd hard.

This kinda reminds me of the B.F.G. and the added humour at the end.

"The people from Turkey taste like turkey. People from Greece taste like grease. The people from Lesbos love beaver."

Today's Date: May 1st, 2008.
Term "Lesbian" coined: 1732

They've had 276 years to bring this up. Why now?

Also, Mrs.Garrison > Mr.Garrison. Boo@reverse sex change. Mrs.Garrison was a firecracker.

Wow people never cease to amaze me. Lesbonians was taken, or wtf? Seriously, the whole lot of them need to find something else to do with their time.

I'm completely out of the loop with South park right now... so..

Why did Mrs. Garrison reverse the sex change? Mr. Garrison was kinda bland, worse when he lost his puppet =/

Because he wasn't really a 'woman' because he couldn't have babies, so therefore was really a man and wanted his penis back.

well they've probably been hearing more lesbian jokes in the last 30~40 years nonstop than for the last 500. Eventually there's a point where you gotta tell a person to shut the hell up.

And it's easier to file a lawsuit than to look someone in the face and say, "Yeah that's funny asshole. How old are you anyway?" Are people so insecure about sexuality that they have to sue to be officially declared straight? As if that will really stop some juvenile from using a term that's been used for ages to describe a homosexual just because he thinks it's amusing. And what's so "shameful" about being called a lesbian anyway? Some of them apparently missed some of the shit that happened over the course of Greek history. Because I promise you it wasn't all straight.

I'm a lesbian and proud of it!

The funny thing is that there is so much speculation that Alexander the Great was gay, which I find ironic since he is the greatest military commander in history.

I hear if you want to become a lesbian, you have to lick carpet.

<Cartman> Well I've been munching on this box all day and I dont feel like a lesbian...

...or something to that extent.
