One simple exchange got me fumed enough to start typing this:
I'm teletaxing, flag not up, 37WHM/17BLM. In the middle of a teleport:
*leader*> Hi pt in Nest?
Me> Would you mind if I came as my SMN/WHM?
*leader*> Um no thanks.
Ugh. Just... ugh. I'm fairly certain that 90% of the people that are out there looking for mages have absolutely no idea what Summoners are capable of post-patch. To all new, up and coming SMNs, a few words of advice.
1) If ANY other mage job is LFG, drop your flag and go do something else. WHM, RDM, BLM, BRD - they're all going to get the invite before you. Never mind that your mana pool will almost always be deeper (mine's ~650 with food @37, and will go up another 110 by items alone at 40) or that you can function perfectly well as a main healer in the Nest (Whispering Wind is a hate-free Curaga II and aside from Regen and Cure III you basically have all the WHM tools,) you're going to be picked last. And God forbid...
2) If you don't have Fenrir, don't expect to stay in JP parties. Or be invited to them, for that matter. {Fenrir} {/no}? {I'm sorry.} {That's too bad.} And you don't hear from them again. Believe me, if I had the high-level friends (or the 2-3 million gil I'd need to bribe such people) he'd be mine tomorrow. Sadly, this is not the case. I'm suprised SE gave us the L20 solo battles - the job was even more elitist before that.
3) Everyone is going to tell you how to play your job. If you send an av out to melee, at least one person will tell you to drop it and heal. If you just heal, someone will make the "We didn't invite a SMN to be a gimped WHM" jab. SC and BP timing is very tricky with SMN, too - but you get no forgiveness when you miss. The melee jobs have had since day 1 to figure out SC timing - we SMNs have had about three weeks. Cut us some slack, please. And despite that...
4) Non-SMNs have almost no idea what SMNs can actually DO. Especially post-patch We heal (main or backup.) We can buff the pt in ways no other job can. We can debuff the mob, both with WHM spells and Blood Pacts (Tail Whip adds Gravity, Megalith Throw Slow, Thunderspark Paralyze, and so on.) Our avatars do respectable damage (~20 per hit on ITs, 125-200 on Blood Pacts, and 220+ on Magic Bursts.) We can open AND close just about any level 1 or 2 skillchain. If we're in a jam, our 2hr (along with MNKs) is the best way to turn a TPW into more XP for the group. We're tough, we're capable, for the most part we know what we're doing - and we're damn proud to play the job we play.
Now all we need is the opportunity to show you what all we can do.
