Any high level fishers ever managed to hook, not necissarily catch, but hook a gugrasaurus or a lik without serpent rumours using the meatball on al zhabi ferry / minnow method?

I know it's common theory you cna only hook them with the key item, but I'm wondering if it is just the key for the quest itself, cause I know you can trade the two to zaldon without the key item (0/5 on both of them)

I'd like to kow if anyone specifically has sat and casted the bait without the key item, and gotten no bites on them liek 20 times, gaurenteeing the need the key item theory, otherwise I'm probably gonna go test out my lu shans / alby ring in lurieum lagoon...
