I dunno if any of you have heard from the news or the Daily Show, but the catholic church seems to be thinking about changing the religion around to say, "Limbo? Doesn't exist."

Now, I don't know about you, but I imagine when they said "Eating meat on Fridays is ok!", there was some panic. Now they are saying the souls of the damned don't have a place to go? They aren't in heaven for a reason, so the only other spot would be Hell. Hmmm, eternal pain and suffering or an extreme lack of things to do...

Without a Limbo, where to the unbaptised babies and people go? Hell? "Yes Billy! If your little brother dies, his soul won't go to an empty void full of nothingness. He will be sent to Satan to be brutely tortured for all of eternity. And yes Billy, that's a very long time."

I was baptised Catholic, but prefer the term Agnostic, since things like this make me hate organized religion. Anyone else see this and their thoughts?

Little changes to religious beliefs for conveince always makes me feel uncomfortable. If that was wrong, what else was wrong?

It's called purgatory if you're just reffering to the catholic church in general.

Limbo involves a bit more afterthought and is simply a generalized term for purgatory.

And both are used as a means to cleanse a soul of sin before entering the kingdom of god for those of you who aren't big on reading.

I agree to a point though. Did they get a note from god or something?

...wow, WAY to much drawn together for you.
i say just let us use condoms and get over with it. the catholic church would agree if they went to any elementry school in america and watched the little kids for just five minutes.
"Teacher, i have to go doody!" "Ok, just hurry up Billy!" "...Never mind, i dont have to go anymore."
and those are the GOOD kids...

I sure am, but this thread deserves it. No offense to the OP, but religion, in most cases is usually much more than just what doctrine says it should be.

Real people have thier own relationship with god and don't believe what thier told so much as what they personally feel to be true.

If you think your god sends stillbornes to limbo or hell, you need to rethink who you worship.

Wait wait, did I come off as religion loving? If so, that's completely wrong.

I'm an agnostic, which means I don't follow any organized religion but believe in a higher power, and I just thought what they did at the Vatican was funny.

I mean, eventually we will see a Buddy Christ at this rate.

You're a Deist, Maxi, Agnostic is if you're not sure if God exists.

I think Trippyhippy hit the nail in the head. I never believed in Limbo, so I'm happy that this happened. I had never heard of Limbo until I saw "The Others"... it just isn't stressed anymore. The Church must've seen this and decided that maybe it didn't exist...

Why should it piss anyone off that the Church is changing? It's supposed to change. It's not archaic as everyone says...

We are upset because it seems on a whim of convience rather than divine inspiration. These are the people that keep telling us what lies in the great beyond because they claim to have spoken with God. To just up and change it means one of these:

A. God lied or changed his mind about how he wants the afterlife shaped
B. The Church was lieing or wrong
C. The Church found a more convient position and are now changing their story.

It is stuff like this that ruins faith. They demand blind faith, but then they go and change what they have been telling people to believe in for millenia. That is not reassuring.

I've never heard of God telling the Church that Limbo existed. I think the Church has a "better safe than sorry" policy. I've never heard a priest say: "Listen to me and don't you ever think!" Quite the contrary, all of the priests I've talked to/heard give Mass always want people to think by themselves and to live happy, sane lives.

You have a very stereotypical view of the Church.

I think it's good the Church finally let go of the belief in Limbo. Whenever the Church says Jesus doesn't exist, or that we're free to kill whomever we want, then I'd be worried about a serious problem in the Canon.

The church has always been able to change to be more convienent. For example when the world was flat heaven was litearally in the sky but after we found out that there was more out there in space it became metaphorical. Hell used to be below the earth's surface but once science proved otherwise he was metaphorical also. So along with this in the last 500 years or so the church has changed it position on the location of heaven and hell as well as if limbo or purgatory even exists.

God is supposed to be infallible so why would he make it so that some of the people that believe in him that do not ask for forgiveness before they die will go to hell. Limbo was created to make people that may not have had a chance to confess their sins before they died the chance to not go to hell.

I'll stick with my position and this ability to change on a whim only furthers my position. Religion is a crutch for the weak minded. People become religious because they dont have enough trust in themselves to admit that they dont know the answer. When this happens people try to figure out what is going on to make themselves feel better about the position that they are in because they are afraid to believe in nothing.

With Christianity what is going to happen to all the people that are not christian. In short most believe that that other religions are going to hell. I am reminded about when i was 8 years old and i went over to a friends house to play. This is when i was still a practicing lutheran (missouri senate). Somehow the conversation got onto religion and my friends 11 year old sister told me i was going to hell because i was lutheran and not southern baptist i believe. For an 8 year old that is pretty dramatic so i ran home crying cause i honestly thought i was going to hell. My mom called the mother of my friend on the phone and the mother said that they cannot help what they believe and that she saw nothing wrong with what her daughter said because it was within their beliefs.

Take the bible for what it is, the greatest fiction book ever written filled w/ morality tales that are designed to make people be better people through fear. Read the bible as if it were harry potter and it is alot more interesting than if u read it as the word of god.

The Church is very sterotypical.

Don't rape.
Don't kill.
Don't steal.
God needs money.

find me a major religion where this all doesn't apply.

I'm of the opinion that religion was created so that people had fear of punishment for thier actions. It makes people want to be a better person so that they are not punished in the afterlife.

A system put in place by people that wanted to keep the peace.

It's all a bunch or cerimonial archaic bullshit.

We live, we die, we rot.
