Linkshell Community beta version is online !

Heh, might want to wait a day or so, with the thousands of linkshells out there all fighting for server time to add their LS and manage it, it'll be down.

Edit: the link didn't work, looks like I was right.

well i just took fast look into it ... its look like i need my POL ID and PW to log in .... i have bad feeling abot this

i just checked it out, seems legit, when you log in it knows all your chars and has all the ls's you have equipped. Like it had all my mules and their lvls and races listed.

Its linked from playonline.com so of course its legit, whats playonline gonna do steal our ID's? O wait they have them already. Hope this is usefully and not just some bs thing from SE. Looks like only JP shells up atm, hope its more than just a message board though, thatd be kinda disapointing.

Message boards are what its meant to be...

It's meant for general linkshell management. It has some cool sections like job levels and craft levels, which is all auto-filled. I'll post some pictures in a little bit when the site comes back online.

Here is a picture of how the LS communite site looks like.

I was able to log in to the site and set up a message board for my LS Wickedwayz.. Anyway it was few hours ago before JP's prime time.

- players need to login with POL password + a/c

- After login, there will be a page showing all your characters, including mule

- Personal profile page showing your game details like LVs, craft LVs, title, missions. You can also upload a 320*240 px of photo and a 50*50 px avatar.

- For LS message board, I was able to set up one as a sackholder. You can upload a 200*200 px of LS picture to the site.

- The message board got a simple default Category, a box for putting community news ( just like the /lsmes in game).

- I can see there is a Quote function, but it seems that there are no edit botton. And as sackholder I can delete any message I want.

if they make this available to use ingame like XFire but for many then SE will have done something good

It would help out the offline players a lot

can u sack and kick people from it i hope u can :D

That would be nigh on impossible (impractical, at the very least) to implement from a web browser. It would require each and every FFXI server to communicate (in real-time) with the servers this would be hosted on ... the increase in bandwidth and processing power necessary would be truly obnoxious. As with most MMORPGs, FFXI servers are independent entities -- they only communicate with game clients (you) connected to it, and Playonline's own databases.

Rather, such a thing would require a piece of software specifically designed to emulate a game client. You would need that for even doing something as simple as sending a tell to someone.

Everquest had something like this, while I was playing it. I never saw the point in it, as I couldn't imagine a reason not to log into the game if I wanted to talk to somebody in it.

Still, I wonder if they still support that software. Does anyone know?

Could you show me where? All I know of is the message-sending system, which is basically e-mail.

I'm not quite sure what you're trying to get across to me with the dual etceteras, Blazn, but there isn't anything there about sending messages to people logged into MMORPGs.

It just looks like a Trillian clone, which bridges the competing IM networks. The only protocols it seems to support are those of AIM, MSN, Yahoo Messenger, and so forth. These all-in-oners have been around for a while, although the fact that this particular one operates out of a browser makes it kind of unique.

I don't see anything in there about either FFXI or WoW.

What's more, Meebo works for those particular networks by turning a browser window INTO an emulator for those clients, using AJAX scripts. In order for you to do the same with FFXI, unless Square-Enix specifically developed the software themselves (which would mean they made accomodations for a tell being sent from a POL ID, rather than a specific character), you'd very much have to "trick" Playonline into thinking you were logged into the game. It's a nasty, unnecessary hassle.

That would just be nuts. It's possible Playonline itself really has made something like this available, that I just don't know of. Sony did, with Everquest. I really doubt it, and it seems to me that you're saying someone has independently created the phantom tell-sender. If I'm mistaken about what you meant, then I apologize.

Otherwise, I think you're either sorely mistaken, or (and I really don't want to be mean to you) are just pulling crap out of your ass.

What if you were

A. Bored at work

B. Can't play due to rl issues

C. Miss some of the people on there since most don't like to go to forums or IM chat instead of playing the game.

Out of curiosity, setting the Community Message in the Linkshell Community doesn't actually change the /lsmes for your shell in-game, does it?

The actual URL for updating that Community Message contains the string "lsmes," and I can't login to the game right now to see if I just confused the heck out of players wondering why I just welcomed them to Beta. O_O
