I'm no big Obama supporter and I don't think I would be even if I was American, but I consider something broken if a politician didn't do one of his promises during his time in office. He's still in office, what if he completed some of those promises later on?

Actually... Clinton's approval rating which was already fairly high went up considerably after the affair. It seems it helped him connect with the common man...

Also, if you read the comments under the list on the source website, some responders have pointed out that some of these "broken promises" have been resolved and yet the site owner hasn't removed them...

I don't understand why everyone expects a quick fix, alot of these changes that were promised are going to take months of legislation, especially since alot of it involves over-turning legislation that occured during the bush administration which will take even longer.... Also, Obama doesn't have the luxury of WMD's, Falsified information or 9/11 to get bad policy pushed through

The fact is that over half of these were in relation to who he was going to appoint and those are not things that he can unbreak.

Whether or not we should have asked the question is not that important. The fact is that he chose to answer it and lied about it... then got caught lying. The truth is i am probably more critical than any one else on this site about bush's policies and now i am seeing that they are largely being continued when the promise was change.

Now i know that a lot of these promises cannot be unbroken yet Obama still walks on water for most of his supporters and my question is why... is everyone truly that blind?

He promised no lobbiests then hired more than any president ever before. He scolded bush on warrantless wiretapping then expanded the program. He keeps the head of the DOD and CIA in place after being extremely critical of what they have done in the past. Stated no more earmarks then passes a bill with the most ever. Claims transparency and the ability for people to read bills and comment on them before they are allowed to vote on them, then passes the biggest bill in history 2 hours after it was finished being written without debate.

Politicians break promises, and frequently they do so for good reason. George H. W. Bush probably serves as as good an example of that as anyone.

Aside from that, I question what good Bill Clinton ever did in office that warrants this near-deification he seems to have received from some people. He got lucky, presided over an economic boom that had functionally nothing to do with any policy of his, lasted just long enough to hand the subsequent recession onto his successor, and did a lot of really stupid things that would come home to roost in Dubya's administration.

Which is not to say that I like Dubya, since I strongly suspect that he fostered a climate in the intelligence services that encouraged telling one's superiors what they want to hear, which is quite possibly the most idiotic thing you can do in that field.

When you get right down to it, I dislike pretty much every politician, actually. Though not as much as I dislike libertarians and marxists... At least politicians live in the real world...

Just to pile on, give the guy some time. Jesus Christ, he just inherited a huge fucking mess from one of the worst presidents in U.S. history. You expect him to snap his fingers or wiggle his nose like Samantha Stevens on Bewitched?

Some of the stuff on that list is just petty -- "ZOMG! HE DIDN'T STOP SMOKING!" and "He said he's have the troops out in 16 months but now it's going to be 18! Oh noes!" Never mind that he said all along his 16-month timetable would depend on the conditions in Iraq.

The bit about rendition is bullshit. Rendition is just extradition. He vowed to do away with the "extraordinary rendition" where we send them abroad so they can be tortured and interrogated. It's a subtle difference, I know.

I have a hard time seeing where Hillary Clinton is supposed to be some indicator that he's not changing foreign policy, when it's been obvious from day one that he's not the strutting cowboy who just demands shit and expects people to go along with him.

But my favorite has to be saying he's breaking his promise to reach across the aisle to Republicans. Seriously? He gave them every opportunity to sound off on the stimulus bill and he incorporated some of their ideas instead of simply dismissing them out of hand exactly the way they did it when they ran Congress.

It seems the only thing the GOP is good for these days is slapping Obama's hand away when he offers it, and then whining that he's being mean. The GOP got their asses handed to them for the way they ran the country under Bush. They should be thankful they get any meaningful role in legislation these days.

The author of that list isn't going to be happy with Obama no matter what he does, so I'm not too worried about his faux disillusionment. It probably drives him nuts that his approval rating is in the upper 60s and has been climbing because people thing he's doing a decent job of handling all the bullshit he was handed.

Obama's done some stuff that's disappointed me -- the government is obligated to investigate war crimes instead of "looking ahead instead of looking back" -- but he's got a lot on his plate at the moment and he's still better than what we had before. I hope he manages to reform health care and pave the way for that lovely universal stuff they have in other developed nations.

Fuck the wealthy and their whining about returning to the Clinton-era tax rates. I'm enjoying my tax cut along with the other 95% of the country who got one.

Anyone who knows anything about Washington knows you can't just go in and change how things are done or the "culture" with any kind of speed. All you end up doing is alienating the people you need to get things done and you have another Jimmy Carter presidency on your hands. People seem to forget that congress is more powerful than the executive. One of the major roles of the president is to get congress's support. Without it, a president is powerless to actually get anything they want done.

I am however a bit dissapointed with the lack of transparency thus far as well as his obsession with Afghanistan. If history has taught us anything, its that you cannot win a total war in Afghanistan and it will ruin you if you continue to try. I don't give a fuck about Bin Laden, hes one fucking guy. Sure, it would be cool if we get him, but what exactly does it really change afterwards? Not damn near enough to warrant the cost.
