Living forever

Um...yeah not the brightest idea or the most practical in the book, I'd like to keep an open mind to it but the possibility makes me think of the ability to create a long lasting government in the control of a few 'immortal' people/groups. Not just the U.S. in particular but any type of government where power is supposed to pass down.

Personally I'm only living as long as I'm allowed to, life's good but afterlife is better.

If it was possible to create this immortality then it'd make us prone to another diesease or mutate over time, who really wants to try out a new product without years of research/testing behind it? Even then it's always a chance since human medicine is risky

I should be allowed to live forever at my current age, but no one else. I'm cooler than everyone else.

I don't believe in a god or the afterlife, so... I'd like to live forever. I'd also take that semi-eternity of traveling through space. Sign me up, as long as the missus can come along. :o

This reminds me of the story in soul calibur 3, with zasalamel

he discovered immortality, but after several hundred years through reincarnation he began to loathe life so much that he spent the remainder of it trying to find out a way to die.

I wouldn't want to live forever. (I am a Christian so the afterlife would have some to do with it) but even if that wasn't the case, I would begin to hate life eventually, no matter how interesting it may get.

also, who would want to see the bucket of shit this world is going to be in a few generations anyway?

it's not really so much that i'm religious myself, a lot of the people here make me wonder why we're the same race nor do I want to be a person who becomes more like them overtime(you know like the good cop gone bad?,etc.).

I'd probrably only take it for the benefit of someone else, I read a spanish short story on this maybe I can find it and give a translation; it was pretty interesting.

I see no problem with extending life as long as the extended life isn't a liability. But yea, I agree with Tymon, even if you were to live forever with the way our minds are ingrained with death as it is you would most likely simply grow tired of living and seek to die.

As of right now, I wouldn't mind living a little longer(CF issues and all...) but living forever would be a pain. As of right now all we do in life is have babies, make sure those babies grow up happy, work to be a success(either in the eyes of family, friends, or ourselves0, and then die. What would we do if we could live forever? It'd make anything you did in life pointless.

"Hey *insert some name here*, I just mastered Advanced computer engineering, cooking, art, and so much more"
"Big deal, I mastered those 100 years ago. Spend your infinite life doing something better"

I don't think it would be bad to have certain people have a longer, if not constant, life span. The world could due with a longer-term Mother Theresa and Pope John Paul III, Ghandi and a few other selfless people that only want to see the world better itself and life continue on happily.

For myself? It would suck not knowing. With my religion, I believe in an afterlife and reincarnation. I think its fully-well possible. What would bother me, is not knowing. There would be large gaps in shared conciousness and I am far too curious (or nosey, whichever :P ) to want to stop, had I the choice. I would like to be able to watch over my family in all of its future generations. Be they my children or my neices and nephews. The families of my friends and those that I love. I think it would be pretty cool.
