local Vana'diel Tribune replacement?

So yeah, Vana'diel Tribune has been discontinued as read elsewhere on QCDN. What is the sentiment on creating a monthly Quetzalcoatl ezine? It would have to be a collaborative effort of writers, gfx designers, layout, distribution, and marketing people.

It should be possible to create a monthly multipage ezine that is distributed online and linked to a special section here at QCDN were articles can be discussed. A HQ PDF version would be available for download and print. Heck, one could even come up with an official binder and then create high quality prints for distribution.

Is there any interest for such a project? Would you read it?
Would you contribute as writer or gfx designer? Do you have any previous experience (school newspaper, current job, anything like that)? Do you have the time?

Quetzalcoatl is a little behind other servers when it comes to end-game, but we do have the the by far largest online presence, and if we were to create a monthly ezine then we would really kick the other servers in terms of community and presentation.

Thoughts?

I think it sounds like an awesome idea. We could have an editor/editors, and the members of QCDN could send in articles, which the editors then pick out.

Could really kick-off and become huge ^^

The focus would of course be on Quetzalcoatl, it could include things like which shell won which fights, interviews with shell leaders, interviews with long running statics, I mean just in general more player focussed than the Tribune was.

This of course begs the question of: Why do it?
Well, for those who would be "staff" writers and designers the answer could be one of the following:
  • Fame (or notoriety if you like) - nothing is more of an ego stroker than being recognized in game by a lot of people, unfortunately those who are good at their trade usually do not require ego strokage
  • Experience - depending on your career choice, being part of a successful ezine will look good on your resume, especially if it is a valuable content ezine and not just noise like so many of them out there
  • Community Contribution - this is the appeal to the noble cause, you want to contribute for the sake of someone else's benefit, you feel that spending your time to write an article about the Quetzalcoatl life beats farming bees
What's in it for me?
QCDN popularity. We have some 3.7k registered users. How many players are there on Quetzalcoatl? Maybe 10k? Maybe 20k? I have no clue. How many of them are NA or English speaking JP? Again, I have no clue. What I do know if that I want them to be QCDNers.

Monetary Rewards
This would have to be decided upon by the team, but my suggestion would be to keep paid ads out of it, but instread set up a page where users can donate to individual staff members, or to the team. Team donations would be split between team members, or could be handed out as a bonus to whomever the team wants to have the cash or either which way.

Whoever wants to do this would have to do it because he or she is passionate about it, the time invested will by far exceed any donations that will come in, so don't look at this as an income source.

Well, I for one miss the Tribune and always enjoyed reading it. I also love to write so......I would have to say that I would be very interested in doing this.

I think a good many others can vouch for my writing skills. :)

I have some experience with writing news articles. I'll do it for free if I can interview Cythe. Heh.

Let me know Sculli. ^^

This thread isnt just for ppl who want to contribute. Sculli also wants to know if you would actually enjoy receving this to read. So, post up and lets get this thing a-rollin ;)

I'm not much of a writer, but id definately read it. The thing that never interested me about the Vana Tribune was the fact that it was all about people i didnt know. If there were articles written by/about people from this server and/or message board that were recognizable (Vang, Meeze, Decidence, Alyada, Trizzip, even Blazn ^^ Just to name a few that come to mind) I would read it from front to back. Ill bet that most would agree...

We will require a swimsuit issue.

I too think this is a great idea, I'm not a writer but I'd love to read it to see what's going on in the community...

I concur

I'd be very interested in reading it, sounds like a lot of fun.

Dude i would totally be all over this, not only for info but a good LOL as well.
I will happily take on the Profile drawings, Such as Vang Pw0ning all Non THF's while camping for his knife, or our beloved Sabs being chased by a huge train of angry Goblins, or a funny looking cemetery on a sky scene representing the hard ass wipe of an LS they just got, or....

sorry just seemed like a cool idea. If it goes thru i would be more than happy:biggrin:

I have a lot more pieces but i guess this can serve as a portfolio for now...

I love reading the Tribune, and im truly sad for its departure. This would be really cool and entertaining.

I'd write stuff ^^

I'd write stuff. dunno how often though XD Rather busy with school <.<; But I'd probably write stuff whenever I'm lfg and not doing homework (which is probably pretty often), heh...

I think this would be a great idea. I read all of the tribune whenever the new issue came out, even if I didnt care about the crap like crafting; I still read it! I'd be more than happy to volunteer my writing services in addition to those already opting to write. I think it would be dope to be a part of this.

I was always wondering how I could become a writer for the VT, so I'd love to write a feature, maybe edit too.

Yeah, it would be neat and fun to read, people ingame could become celebrities, lol, then any events being held can also be in there, like monthly events, LS recruiting, and the works.

I cant wait to hear what Sculli has to add on this topic :)

Sure looks like someone went on a low-thread-rating spree this morning. 2 stars for this thread, obviously someone out there thinks it's a horrible idea but doesn't have the balls to just say so, ah well, keep on rating.

Anyway, the main concern I have is that a project like this means committment. Nothing would be worse than to get it going, have an outstanding first issue, and then have the whole thing fade away.

I know I will be here to take care of the technical aspects, but I am not a gfx designer, and I am not a writer when it comes to FFXI.

Some of the practial things that would need to be worked out would be page size (something that will work for both, US letter size and EU A4 size), or perhaps the whole hard-copy idea is no good and not worth the effort to work on a print quality PDF but instead do HTML only.

A name for the whole thing is needed as well.
