I was curious if anyone has experienced the problem described below, and if anyone had any suggestions or trouble shooting they could recommend. (Can't contact SE until Monday)

When logging into FFXI, after getting to the character selection menu and clicking on one (tried multiple characters) this error message is received:

Error Code: FFXI-3001
No response from the FINAL FANTASY XI server.
Connection timed out.
Press OK to shut down.

The problem started last night, and at first it was thought to be a problem with the ISP or router. But the internet works fine, and the router shouldn't be an issue either because someone else in the same house was able to play FFXI while being connected to the same router. Also, port forwarding has already been configured.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've had this problem occur, too, but only after some weird circumstance.

If I would get through PoL and idle at the first XI screen (The agreement where you have to confirm in order to proceed), after some short period of time it would give me that error when I tried to sign in. I'd have to log all the way out of PoL and restart it in order to proceed.

Also, since my internet is Comcastic, sometimes I lose my internet connection for just a minute or two; Long enough to time me out of XI but not long enough to crash me entirely out of PoL. Same song and dance; trying to log into XI directly will always time me out after selecting my character, and I'd have to reboot my entire PoL in order to get in.

Have you tried rebooting playonline? That's how I always got around it.

Thanks for the reply.

The logout process was done as suggested, but unfortunately that hasn't resolved the problem. :(

Also i've done a bit of reading through various forums for other ppl that have experienced the same problem, and some mention that resetting the router works, others mention disabling the firewall, others say "check files" fixed the problem.

But no one has mentioned whether or not the tech support from SE has managed to help fix the problem. I'm wondering if I call tomorrow, if they'll even be able to help? I'm starting to get the feeling they won't.

You'll probably get the exact same runaround: "This error means this, check this and this and this." Still, its worth calling, since they know WHAT is causing the problem, instead of us just shooting in the dark for a solution.

Its like the old NES game stigma: Try blowing into your connection! Worked for Tecmo Bowl countless times.

Edit: Go bigger! Restart the whole machine >.>b

I don't really believe that this fixed the problem, but its the only thing that was done since being able to login: POL Check Files (None needed to be fixed of course)

there's something either on your end (which checking the files will see if any of your .dats or system files have gone corrupt) or it's a server issue on SEs end

That's weird. The only problems I've ever had with .dats would outright crash my system, not prevent me from logging in. Its working now, yes? The answer is clear, then: YOU MUST NEVER LOG OUT.

I got this once today... tried again and it worked perfectly.
