lol... this made me laugh. Anyways, this could easily have been added onto the "You play too much FFXI" thread...

Relevant to the 'lol', I heard that japanese shorthand in romanized characters for lol is:

w

I forget what the full w word is... but I heard they shorten it down to just a w so if you see just that coming from a Japanese player, it probably means...lol.
 
tis short for 'warau' or 'waraimasu' = to laugh in japanese. The funnier it is the more w's.
