Im about to start Lvling Bst since the time zone im in doesn't allow for optimal play time for partying and im looking for a job i can solo. Now here is where the slight challenge arises. For solo'n i need to lvl whm. I have two factors working against me but neither are deterring me.
1. I know very little about mage jobs in the first place.
2. My main character is a Galka and thats never gonna change.
Im just looking for pretty much advice on what it would take for a galka to be a good mage while lvl'n. I know it takes alot for a galka to be a great mage im just looking to be a pretty good mage that won't hinder a party while being able to have fun with the jobs. any advice would be much appreciated

there is alot of mp gear that you can get for lvls 1-12. that is going to be your best bet. load up on as much mp as possible

Im sitting at work and i haven't had time to look at what type of gear there are for mages. I need to save up some more seals so i can try and get and astral ring or two cuz i know im going to need atleast one of those.

Since you plan on soloing WHM a bit, carry a BIG stick, I.E. Ash Pole +1 or something of the like.

Your Galka, you can take hits, and you can give em... dont worry about MP until 10ish +, then you can get Astrals if you have gil.

Yes 10+ will cost alot for those Astrals, Energy Earrings, and whatever else has MP+, but its worth it in the end, hell shoot for the moon and take it to 37 if you like it, then take BST.

Well i have gil just not enough for astrals. but what my plan is to do is take BLM to 10 then take whm to 20 then start working on Bst and every now and then work on lvling BLM and WHM when time allows. Well im going to start partying on Whm once i hit 10+ so ill get Lvls faster and get to working on bst ASAP

There are a bunch of excellent BSTs on this board, I changed the thread title to get their attention. Descriptive thread titles ftw!

You can try reading Firestreak's guide to Main Healing but a lot of it deals with higher level white mages, so I'll try to cover low level maging.

If you have tons of money, astrals will be your best friend. If you don't have them, don't worry about it. If you have summoner unlocked, I would recommend that you sub summoner, since it will get you a couple extra mp per level than /blm would to help with your low mp pool. As a mage, defense is negligable, and especially as a galka mage, you need mp before almost anything else. I'd say go with gear that gives a little mp but has crap defense over something with good defense and no +mp. I would also recommend a Pilgrim's wand for when you're resting. And mabe a staff with +mp or a club with +mnd for when you're almost full or you're healing.

At low levels, you'll want some +mnd gear to help cap your cures, but once you start hitting 30 for cure 1 and you get closer to 90 for cure 2, you can try trading off some +mnd gear for +mp gear until you find a good balance. Also, when the fight is over, and unless you can cure 2 for 90 hp every time, do NOT use cure 2 outside of a fight. Both cures give a 3.75:1 hp:mp ratio, so it's more efficient to use smaller cures. Even when you're in a fight, using smaller cures is better unless they need a ton of hp right now(like they're almsot dead), you build up less hate and manage your mp more effectively.

You won't be a hinderence to a party as a white mage, but you will feel your limits faster with your mp pool being so low. You don't have to let everyone be at 100% hp all the time, 90% will be just fine if it helps your mp management. As a whm, your priority is THE TANK, they are the main ones keeping you alive, so if the tank and some DD is in yellow hp, your first cure should go to the tank, then the DD if you have time.

Also, when you get to 21, Regen will be your friend. The Regens are by far the most efficient mp >> hp spells for white mage, but you sacrifice hp gained by the time it takes to get the hp. Regen lasts for 1 minute, so 20 ticks of whichever spell you have, so you will have plenty of time to cast a regen and then apply cures as needed. You can also just buy the party-only protect and shell spells, the single targets are never used in a party unless nin clicks them off, but you can use the party spells for those. The party spells cost the same amount of mp, and are often cheaper than the single-targets. Of the bar-spells, the only one you'll every even notice an effect on will be barfira or barwatera for crabs, the bar-status effect spells all suck and aren't worth the money.

As for food, Rolanberry pies are great for low levels for the +50 mp they give. Another good alternative is ginger cookies(Or wizard cookies if you feel like splurging a little) for the +5 hmp(+7 for wizard) they give, which is huge at low levels with your low/no clear mind traits. Roasted mushrooms are kind of a balance between the two, but you might want to go to one of the extremes.

Oh, one thing you should definitely not try to do. Unless you are camping right next to the zone, and you have to throw out a benediction or maybe a divine seal + curaga and get a ton of hate, DO NOT RUN AWAY. Running means no one will be able to get hate off of you, so you're almost guaranteeing your death and the death of your party. This doesn't mean never use your 2hr, but please be smart about it.

WRONG, do not listen to this idiot. Do not melee in your party if you're a whm, you'll get killed or waste mp curing yourself after AoE and you'll do crap amounts of damage. You should keep yourself out of AoE range but within spell range if you can, you should never purposefully be up next to the mob.

If you've got Astral Rings, use em along with whatever other +MP gear you can find. Focus a bit on +MND as well. If your WHM's lvl 1 and you plan to solo it to 10 or so before PT'ing, sub MNK and punch away. I've heard that works wonders for that level range. :D From there just follow Bajaratt's recommendations, there's nothing new I can add in that hasn't already been said lol.

Once you start BST, check out the BST forum on Allakhazam, there's a stickied leveling guide or 2 and a lot of other useful info there. Have fun! :D

Well i don't have my own astral's but i will prolly borrow one while lvling my whm. and ive already read over most of the forum's on ffxi.somepage and ffxionline.com. i haven't made it to allakhazam. but in my LS there are a few High lvl BST that already said they will show me the ropes of being a good BST

I did this on my galka mule who has no subjobs, it was really easy to level WHM up to 12 and I made decent cash doing it from the drops too. I would say with a subjob you could easily take it to 14-15 before heading to the dunes to PT. Ashpole +1 from 5-10 and Legionnare's staff 10+ and you'll probly want to keep that as you go through the dunes. I ate Mith Kabobs and averaged a level an hour, which is far better than most dunes PTs.

I would recommend taking your WHM to 21 instead of 20, before you put it aside, just so if you get sidetracked and end up leveling a bit without your sub being capped, you will at least have regen.

Well the reason im just stopping at 20 atm is so i can work on bst. and ill be lvl'n whm up as im also lvl'n bst. I hate to have an underlvl'd sub, to me doing that your just hurting yourself.

Please Note Bajaratt, Exodusamphi was referring to the period of time (lv1-10) where your pretty much going to be solo'ing as (any job).

Pretty much the best advice has already been given ;.;

I wouldn't recommend charming anything til at least level 11, when you can use Mad Sheep in La Theine/Konshtat. Additionally, you can camp Sharp-Eared Ropipi for an Entrancing Ribbon (5def, +2chr, level 11), usually pops around the Southeast Ruins area, instead of waiting til level 14 to get a Noble's Ribbon. Of course, Noble's is still better; Entrancing is just good if you need level 11-14 to go a little smoother or just can't afford Noble.

LOL, It DID get my attention. Thanks Sculli.

Tonicfly, shoot me a /tell anytime in game. I can help answer questions.
If I'm soloing Bombs in Ifrit's again, my answers may be choppy but I'll try.
