Title pretty much says it all. I'm thinking bout getting an iMac and I was just wondering where you Mac owners think would be the best place to purchase one. Is it better to do it at an Apple Store, or are there cheaper, yet still good, alternatives?

Thanks!

Mac Store -- where the employees call themselves "genius".

True story.

I would just purchase one online and save yourself the hassle of going to a store and listening to evangelizing when you might slip-up and tell them that you might actually use Windows or MS Product.

Follow Tristam's advice. The "Genius Bar" at most mac stores are basically just glorified help desk command menus.

Get it online and avoid the hassle of people that work there.

Why do you want a mac?

I've been house-sitting for a friend of mine and using his iMac for the last few days. I don't know what it is, but I really like using it. I'm in the market for a new computer and I think that's the direction I want to go.

I saw ads at the Art Institute for the Mac Store here, and they all read "hiring: Mac Genius". I pointed it out to Stine, gave her a "wtf" look, and kinda scratched my head.

I want to at least visit the Mac Store in Charleston when it opens up, but I feel as if I will have to first go buy myself a pair of skinny jeans, a pair of Buddy Holly frames (my next set will be Black thick frames anyway, always wanted a pair), and a brown leather "satchel"(read: manpurse) :D

Note: you do know something isn't right when a devout Mac user like Makelith admits something is wholly wrong with the store personnel attitudes.

I thought you were used to odd looks by now. I'm 4' 10 and a half inches tall and you're 6'5" and we're pretty random so we get odd looks all of the time. >.> We're definitely going to go to the store when it opens. I might not buy anything but it will be fun to look at the shinies.

I've only really had one problem with a "genius" before, and that is because he actually thought he *was* a genius. All the rest of them are really helpful, but still none-the-less glorified help desks. I was talking more about the attitudes of the salespeople that will try to upsell you on everything. I fucking hate that shit.

Also, i'm a Charleston native, so you guys get major cool points with me.

The Macs are priced roughly at the same price everywhere. Try BestBuy to go lower on price.

- and remember to put your new Mac right in front of the door. That way when you invite girls over the WOW factor will bounce them right to your couch.

So long as you don't call it "Chucktown", as has been increasingly popular in the past 5-10 years, that's fine with me

Some Best Buy stores carry them, and they are the same price as what you get them for in a Apple store. I'd try to buy locally in case you happen to get a defective one straight out of the box so you can return it and exchange it.

I know we sell them at Fry's Electronics, but I've never looked at the price since I'm never buying a mac. The Microcenter near my apartment has been advertising "the lowest prices on mac's ever," again, I've never looked into it.
